meteorologist kari hall of course keeping us up to date on what we can expect with temperatures todayhow is it looking out there for us? >> it's going to be very much like yesterday, if you were out and enjoyed the afternoon, it's going to be like that once again. let me show you where we're headed for the south bay, reaching into the mid 80s. gilroy today 86 degrees while downtown san jose has a high of about 78 degrees. seven-day forecast is coming up in the bottom of the screen. yes, i don't know if you want to take a look or not. let's talk about today. it's going to be 81 degrees in danville. 72 for a high in hayward. we're going to see some of those upper 50s and low 60s near the coast, while palo alto tops out at 76 degrees. we'll see some 60s in san francisco today, still pretty nice there, starting out with some fog in our north bay temperatures will reach into the upper 70s and low 80s. this is the heat that's about to build not only for the bay area but also across the region. there are excessive heat watches and warnings in effect for multiple states and especially for sou

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those temperatures. we're going to see triple digits and possibly even hitting some records as well. >>> yeah, we're going to be watching those numbers closely as the thermometer rises today. let me get you ready for heading out the door in observing, maybe heading to the b.a.r.t. station. we'll see temperatures here starting out in the low 60s and at least we do have these cool temperatures for the morning hours but you can see how quickly it warms up. by the time you're heading home we're talking about temperatures here in the upper 80s. going around the bay highs up to 102 degrees in morgan hill. even hotter in pleasanton and san rafael will have some very warm temperatures reaching 88 degrees. this is the peak of the heat. we'll cool down a little bit this weekend. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, what is going on as people get ready to head out the door? >>> we follow up with the crash, more detail. and, unfortunately, it involves a car and a motorcycle. i'm always very concerned,

meteorologist kari hall has a look at that forecast for us today. kari, how is it looking out there? >> it's going to be warmer today. our temperatures heading up a few more degrees as we get a live look in san jose, upper 50s right now and we will see a few clouds to start out this morning, but quickly clearing out as our temperatures heat up. this is where we're headed up to 85 degrees in san jose, but notice those 90s that we're going it see in the east bay and south county and widespread for the north bay. it's not going to stay like this all week. we'll talk about a cool down in our fourth of july weekend forecast in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> pretty good. i mean the contra costa county highway 4 the bridges are movin closure that will continue until about 5:00. there's the head's up there. over here there is a crash reported near 84 and ruby hill. we'll track that. there may be one lane blocked. more detail coming up. back to you. >>> the shaking has finally come to an end in the bay area, at least for now. 3.9 m

meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect from those temperatures today. kari, one thing i will say, yesterday's temperatures i loved and hopefully we can get a repeat. >> just for marcus. >> yeah. but you know what, it wasn't that nice everywhere across the bay area because we had some upper 90s in brentwood as well as farther to the north. i was extremely hot in some areas and that was our microclimates that we're still seeing this morning. we're starting out anywhere from 53 degrees to 75 in clearlake and clearlake was really sizzling yesterday. so we are going to have a cool down for all of us today as that fog lingers near the coast. take a look at our range in temperatures. 63 degrees for a high at half moon bay and 95 in ukiah. antioch today will be cooler with a high of 8 6 degrees. we'll talk about a cooling trend in our forecast. mike, any problems right now for the commute? >> i just wanted to touch on the crash i was talking about over here, milpitas. sounds like it's only affecting the mcarthur on ramp. no major injuries and right by the shoppi

let's get back over to meteorologist kari hall with more on our forecast. >> good morning. and fortunately for those who spots it's not going to be extremely hot today, as we take a look at our current temperatures, where we're beginning this morning, ooh, it's 69 degrees already in brentwood. it's 62 in oakland. 51 in san francisco, and it is 58 in morgan hill. now we're starting out warm, but we get even hotter as we go into later this morning as well as into the afternoon and our temperatures are expected to continue to stay hot for today, but we do have some relief and places where you can cool off. pacifica upper 60s here today and it's going to be nice and sunny, this is what we mean by microclimates. we have 60s in one spots and highs in other spots. vacaville, concord and livermore will be close to records but a lot of the numbers are just below the mark. as we look at high temperatures up to 101 in morgan hill, 93 in milpitas and 106 in antioch. danville 102 and fremont a high there of 94 degrees. half moon bay will be in the mid-60s but you head o

meteorologist kari hall is here with how the air quality will be affected. but first sharon katsuda is live in emeryville where it could get worse this week. good morning, sharon. >> reporter: good morning. yes, i smelled the smoke this past weekend. right now it's pretty cool and still windy, so you can't smell the smoke right now. still it all depends on what develops this week with the big sur wildfire. it scorched close to 2,500 acres since it started thursday night. it's burning in the wilderness close to the zen center in hot springs. several small areas have been evacuated. firefighters are facing many challenges because the land is so steep and they're considering flying in ground fire crews. many say they smelled the smoke, others say they might not be smelling it because they're still wearing their masks. >> i'm happy that the world is coming back to life, but i don't think we need to be too excited about taking these masks off. look, no flu, no smelling of smoke, all of these things that the mask gives you, you know? >> reporter: when we have smok

i want to bring in our meteorologist, kari hall. those numbers just came out for the drought conditions. >> yeah, we just got the update and it didn't change from last week which is expected because we normally don't get any rain in june. we're seeing still the extreme conditions across the region as the mega drought continues. as we get a closer look at the bay area we are seeing the dark shades of red which is the highest level of the drought and that does continue because of the lack of rainfall. now 100% of california is within a drought. 33% of the state is in exceptional drought. one year ago, only 58% of california was in a drought, so you can see how quickly that has gone bad. we're seeing this at the same time that we will see extreme heat building across the region as we go into the weekend, especially across the pacific northwest. we will talk about how hot it will get in the bay area and the changes we will see here for the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. >>> mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> well,

meteorologist kari hall always working hard to keep us up to date on what's going on with the temperaturesly enough day of mild and walks outside, kari. >> it's been so nice out there. the outdoor workouts and we are going to see more of that today as our temperatures in san jose start out in the low 60s. see the trend we'll stay in the 60s throughout the next several hours and then see the sky clearing as well. we're starting out with a few clouds so as we're going to have another mild day we'll see that continue. the seven-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen and check that out as well as our temperatures today head toward the mid 70s for parts of the peninsula and then into san francisco we'll reach 68 in the city today and for the north bay our highs will reach up to 77 in sonoma. our temperatures are fairly mild for this time of year, but let me show you what's happening across the region. there is this surge of monsoonal moisture that's bringing some rain, even some thunderstorms across parts of southern california as well as heading over toward arizona and southern nevada. an

meteorologist kari hall is tracking the weather conditions. but first let's go to cierra johnson. marcus and laura. in about two hours we'll have a better idea of how the santa clara water valley board votes on declaring that water shortage emergency. now, if that emergency is declared, the board would also likely implement some type of water restriction. looking like 15% of what was used in 2019. valley water tells nbc bay area that reduction is crucial after another very dry winter and low sierra snowpack. some we spoke with are monitoring both the drought levels as well as their wallets. >> i kind of worry, but i've been, you know, in san francisco here for almost 50 years. but i kind of worry about it, every time they're talking about a drought, the next thing, they raise the bill. this is frustrating. >> okay. we're following what the water district board is expected to impose in just a couple of hours. of course we'll keep you posted. >> we can't talk about the drought without talking about the lack of rain that we've been having. meteorologist kari hall of course continues

meteorologist kari hall watching the lack of rain that we're getting here in the bay area. kari? >> so dry during the winter months. the rain was too few and far between, and now we're getting some high winds here and there, and we've seen some gusty winds even kicking up this morning. as we take a live look outside in san jose, a few clouds dotting the sky and at least we do have a cool ocean breeze that's been picking up. still looking at some of those winds coming in from the west at about 20 to 25 miles per hour. it will still be gusty today, but we shouldn't see any winds as high as we did yesterday. we had gusts at 57 through the altamont pass and a lot of 55 readings. today it looks more like 25 to 30. still quite gusty as we still will have the concern of the fire danger because of the dry vegetation that we're seeing and the lack of water in those reservoirs. as we look at our temperatures for today, it has been cool because of that cool air that's been coming in off of the coastal areas, so we're going to continue to see this for a couple more days, and then we'll warm

meteorologist kari hall joining us now, and kari, this was felt by people all across the bay area from san francisco to san jose. can you talk to us more about the fault line and where this is all centered? >> yeah. as you mentioned it is on the hayward fault and it was felt across the bay area. you can see all of these areas where we ha lighter blue shading that shows where people actually felt it and all of the reports that came in and on that hayward fault we watch it very closely because it runs through some of the most densely populated parts of the bay area in the east bay and once again of it right at dinner time as people were sitting down at the table. we watch every single quake here, even though it was a 3.9 and widely felt, the last major earthquake we had was in 1868 here with a 6.8, and so that was considered the great earthquake you up until the one in 1906 along the san an drae asphalt. we will hopefully not see any more activity after that one but it did rattle some nerves. we'll talk more about the weather coming up later zoo it's always a good reminder to be prepared

meteorologist kari hall has been telling us about the temperatures and kari, it's going to be another nice one out there. >> yes. it's been great to have the cooler air. we've been starting out with clouds and what we're seeing right now as the sun tries to peek out from underneath the clouds in walnut creek so we're starting out with our marine layer that keeps the coastal areas cool and provides a breeze to the inland valleys. 60 degrees there will be a slow warmup in our temperatures, the skies starting to clear by 8:00 and we'll reach into the upper 70s for today for many spots in the east bay, south bay and north bay. this weekend we're talking about 90s. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike, what's going on for the commute? >> a couple things going on for the trislooel, mostly green, silicon valley looks great. early slowing cleared up. in sunol, northbound 680 at vargas reports of a rollover crash there but the person is outside of the car calling for help and chp heading over there. there may be a second crash at mission or a duplicate report. we're checking on that.
