but meteorologist kari hall is tracking rain returning this week. good morning, kari. >> good morning. if you're getting ready to get up and head out the door, just be careful on your way out. we're starting out with temperatures in the mid to upper 40s, but overall we are looking at some nice quiet conditions, except for the fog. so if you're in the north bay, you do want to allow some extra time to get down highway 101 from novato into san rafael. we are seeing some really dense fog in those areas. elsewhere, the fog is a little more patchy, but we're down to about a half mile visibility in livermore and our temperatures there today will reach up to 59 degrees. overall, we're starting out with some fog and clouds, but as we go throughout the day, it's going to be nice and sunny and that rain will be coming back tomorrow. so we'll have a look at that timeline in a few minutes. >>> getting on the roads this morning, this is a live look at the richmond-san rafael bridge. there is one vehicle going across right now. and then a little more traffic on th

we want to get right to meteorologist kari hall because, kari, you are covering everything we can expectay. the rain is in and out throughout the day. >> we are going to see more waves of it and we're seeing it picking up in parts of the north bay and san francisco. the long connection of clouds and moisture streaming in from hawaii. it is another atmospheric river affecting us. we're seeing the lightning and storms off the coast, but notice all of the yellows, oranges and reds in san francisco, as the moisture continues to move in, with pockets of heavy rain. marin county from san rafael, on southward, the 101 drive is very slick, as well as a lot of the heavy rain moving over toward oakland, as well as richmond, and it's been off and on for concord. antioch taking a break, but there will be more rain coming in. and as we go into today, still a chance of showers will continue, even at 3:30 we're still seeing some off and on light rain, but there will be more breaks than what we're seeing right now. >>> mike, you were saying there was something going on out of berkeley. >> you talk about

kari hall is here. we've got some spotty rain, too. >> yeah, we do still have lingering rain and that will continue for the next few hours. but all of this with the high winds that kicked up yesterday is really building high waves along the coastline, and there's more storms out in the pacific that will be coming in. as we get a look at stormranger, still quite a bit of wet weather in pacifica, as well as san francisco and parts of the north bay as you get ready to head off for work. we'll see the waves continuing to build. at 10:00 a.m., the high surf advisory will be in effect and then that continues into early tomorrow morning, possibly some of those breakers could reach 23 feet. we're currently seeing them at 15 feet and the water is very cold. so make sure that if you do go there to keep an eye on what's going on, you're watching everyone around you as well as pets. we'll be talking more about the next storm coming in in a few minutes. >>> cinthia is tracking gas prices. >> good morning. well, mayb

we'll check in with meteorologist kari hall, tracking the current conditions in the sierra. but first, nbc bay area's bob redell is live along 580 in livermore. that's where many of those bay area skiers will be traveling as they head out of town, bob. i would imagine for all of those traveling there this weekend, it's a topic and certain concern that's very unsettling about all that's happened there in the past week. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. anytime you're heading out to the snow, of course you want to be careful. those heading out to the ski resorts this weekend for the three-day holiday weekend, taking 580 into the central valley and up to tahoe and the sierra nevada, this is something they should be mindful of after the two avalanches at the palisades tahoe ski resort this weekend. you had one yesterday that fortunately did not hurt anyone. then you had the deadly one on wednesday that killed a 66-year-old named kenneth kidd. he lived part-time here in the bay area. that avalanche buried three other people. they all survived with minor injuries. this was

but we want to start things off with meteorologist kari hall, timing out all of this for us. kari, this is only the beginning for us. >> unfortunately, we could see more downed trees as we are expecting really high winds with this storm system. we talked about the high surf with those big waves that will continue to build this evening into early tomorrow morning. but the rain is just getting started and will get heavier for this evening. that's why we already have flood watches in effect through friday. we'll get about 1 to 2 inches across the bay, but the mountains could get 3 to 5 inches of rail, and those gusts picking up to 40 to 50 miles per hour. as this tapers off tomorrow, we could see some isolated thunderstorms. the big satellite view and the atmospheric river coming in, a closer look with our mobile doppler radar stormranger is showing pockets of heavy rain moving through contra costa county as well as much of the north bay, where we are seeing some pockets of the heavier rain moving in. we we're still expecting the brunt of the storm to hit us in time for the eveni

you can tag me at kari hall weather. temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s. we've seen the low visibility moving from the central valley into fairfield and also into the delta. so watch out for really dense fog. once you make it into the rest of the east bay and north bay, it is looking a lot clearer, and we are awaiting the arrival of rain. but as we look at how we're doing with our water year, we still have some work to do. especially in oakland, where we need over 3 3/4 of an inch of rain to catch up to normal. the rest of the bay area, we've made progress. i think the next several storms coming in will really help us get back to normal. so we're starting out with clouds this morning, some light rain possible. some of the heavier rain rolling into parts of the north bay. afternoon, this is at 12:30, we're seeing the north bay with showers. then we see the darker greens, yellows, oranges, indicating heavier rainfall and we'll see that off and on throughout the evening commute into early tomorrow morning, and then t

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking our forecast.aves and rain. >> yeah, we've got a little bit of everything. we'll go back to sunshine and then cold temperatures coming in as well. this storm system starts to move its way off toward the east, but it brought us a lot of heavy rain. there's also more storms building up out in the pacific as we continue into this very active storm pattern. that's causing the water to pile up along our coastline and we're seeing the waves as of now between 11 and 15 feet. but look at the water temperature, only 57, 58 degrees. and we are going to see those sneaker waves come up. those are the waves that come up a lot higher with a high surf advisory that goes from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 tomorrow morning. so we're expecting the waves to continue to build up for today, making it very dangerous for anyone along the coastline. as far as the rain, we are going to see it wind down today. by noon we're seeing just a couple of very light spotty showers for parts of the bay area. but mostly sunny elsewhere. we'l

but we want to start with meteorologist kari hall, who is leading our coverage. ari, some folks might be waking up this morning saying, what rain? but you say it's coming. >> right. we're at 6:00 in the morning. we do have a lot more of the day to go, and this storm will be closing in on the bay area. so we are expecting it to begin to ramp up during the afternoon, into the evening. we are going to see times of heavy rain and a flood watch in effect for today through friday. we're looking at about 3 to 5 inches of rainfall in the mountains and about 1 to 2 inches in total for the bay. gusty winds that may reach 40 to 50 miles per hour and even the chance of isolated thunderstorms for tomorrow. so here is a look at the storm system as it continues to move in, with right now light rain in parts of the north bay, and northern sonoma county, up toward lake and mendocino counties, we're seeing that rain. and as of now it's widespread and light in those areas. but we are going to see the heavier rain continuing to move in later today. we'll have more of the timeline and

. >> meteorologist kari hall joins us. the return of main may add to the mix as well. >> it's piling up the waves a little higher, but we're going to start to see things churning up tomorrow combined with the king tides. we're looking at a pretty quiet weather pattern out there as far as the wind, but it will start to pick up as we start to see the high surf picking up tomorrow into the end of the week, where we see the oranges and reds that indicates wave heights that could reach 17 to 20 feet. but we are, once again, going to see that combined with the king tides. that's the astronomical tide that happens as we see the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon, all aligned at its closest point to the earth. that brings the water farther inland. we see the water coming up a lot higher for the coastline, as well as the bay shore, and some of those areas that do typically flood during those winter king tides will be affected over the next few days. so we'll be watching that. i'll have a look at the timeline of the rain, th

so let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. she's been monitoring a really busy week. >> we talk about those king tides, those are those higher than normal astronomical tides, and it will be happening later this morning. right now we're at low tide. if you're out there for late morning into the noon hour, you'll notice the water is coming up a lot higher and those low-lying areas along the bay shore trails and coastline will be dealing with localized flooding and the peak of the high tide will be at 11:19 this morning. so we are going to be tracking that as we go through the next couple of hours, and then we'll see the potential of some rain coming in for tomorrow. so looking at the king tides once again, what to expect, we are going to see this as the last day of dealing with that, and the next set of king tides will be coming in on february 9th. looking at the clouds starting to reach into the bay area, we are going to also be tracking that rain as we approach the weekend. so i'll be timing that out for you and we'll talk mor

meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking that.ok treacherous. >> yeah, we are starting out with the temperatures in the single digits in palisades, and probably colder at the top of the phoupbg. we are clear after seeing that snow, and what happens, with those conditions we have a snow depth 20 to 50 inches. there's a weak snow layer, and then when you add in the heavy fresh and thicker snow layer we had in the recent days, all of the snow starts to slide downhill especially with the high wind gusts we have had, and that snow growing downhill grows in size and strength. heads up if you are going there this weekend, another storm watch in effect and we will see gusty winds once again. the snowpack is well below what we typically see, only 37% of its normal amount. we are getting a lot of it all at once even this weekend when we are looking at 9 to 19 inches of snowfall. we will continue to monitor those conditions, and talk about what we have coming up in a few minutes. >>> happening today, community leaders in oakland will make th

we begin with meteorologist kari hall. >>> kari, where is the rain falling right now?f it in the north bay as you get ready to head out. we are going to continue to see waves of showers with breaks as well. but the most widespread rain is in the north bay. so as we take a look at the activity that we've seen over the past couple of hours, we are still seeing very soggy conditions continue as you get ready to head out for work or heading to school. and, once again, we can see the heaviest rain in marin county and it is a little bit lighter for napa and sonoma counties in morning. then we're looking at it moving toward the east bay with contra costa county getting in on some of the heaviest rain as it moves from concord to san ramon. a little lighter toward dublin, but it picks up again. our hour-by-hour forecast, showing rain in the forecast through at least noon, then we start to see it taper off with a chance of rain continuing even into the evening commute. i'll be typing out what to expect and look ahead to the weekend as well. >>> mike, the slick roads are a factor

meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we expect. i know you say you got time off for christmas. >> yes, i did. >> you're working hard today because we have a break and then rain again. >> yes, we have rain coming our way heading into tomorrow. it's going to be beautiful, if you've got family in town to enjoy the new year, get outside and enjoy it. although you will need a sweater, it's going to be nice and a break from the activity, which comes back tomorrow. rain and wind in tomorrow's forecast continuing into wednesday, and we do have some colder air ahead for the sierra. that's going to mean lowering snow levels. the visibility, not too good this morning. if you do have to drive through parts of the north bay, we're seeing visibility down to a quarter of a mile, and it's zero in novato right now. dense fog on 101 coming through marin county and we're also seeing patches of dense fog moving through the tri-valley, as our temperatures warm up today. we're only headed for the low 60s, but we are going to see sunshine this afternoon.

meteorologist kari hall has a look at your weekend forecast. this morning is ice worthy. >> absolutely. i'm sure they are having no problem whatsoever keeping that ice frozen this morning. and we are going to see cool temperatures throughout the day. starting out with a few clouds, but overall we're going to see some peeks of sunshine, and it's going to be a cool day. so you'll keep that coat on as you're ice-skating. if you are lucky enough to have tickets for glowfari this weekend, we are going to see some nice weather for that at the oakland zoo. it's from 5:00 to 9:00 tonight. we are also looking at some off and on snow showers in the forecast for palisades. we're going to continue to see temperatures as you head around the bay area in the mid-50s, and we are getting ready for some rain that's going to be coming in tomorrow, and it's going to be pretty much off and on throughout the day. on sunday, it's starting to dry out. but we are also looking at some milder conditions for sunday, with some peeks of sun coming out. i'll be tracking that

. >>> let's turn to meteorologist kari hall. we've got another storm of sorts moving in over the weekend. >> yes, we are just getting storm after storm in the pacific. it's causing those big waves to come up along the coastline and damaging the pierce, and also eroding the coast and some of our beaches. we're dealing with that. but it is very typical of our wintertime storm pattern. right now waves are at about 8 to 11 feet along your coastline and we will once again be tracking the potential of some big breakers for today. the beach hazard statement continues until this evening. we may also see some sneaker waves, which makes it very dangerous to be along the coastline. there's another storm out there, that one will be coming in for tomorrow. we'll start out with some dry conditions for today, but then as we go into tomorrow morning, into the afternoon, the rain will start to move in from north to south. by 1:00, we're seeing rain already in the north bay and continuing to work its way across the bay area for tomorrow afternoon

i want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. there were lots of delays we know yesterday.like now and for the rest of the week? >> yeah, it looks like, you know, at any point we could see some low clouds, so that always has an impact on the flights at sfo. we will have a lot of people coming into town for the 49ers game on sunday, so we're going to see it busy around here. but just in time for the game, the sky will clear and we will see sunshine and some beautiful weather. we are looking at our kickoff temperature at 72 degrees, and we will be in the upper 60s by the end of the game. really nice and comfortable, and it is going to be great but we also have a lot more going on around the bay area. in chinatown there will be a lunar new year celebration in oakland both saturday and sunday. if you are going to check that out you will see temperatures there going from mid 50s in the morning to low 60s for the middle of the day. also nice and dry. in napa there will be the lighted art festival happening during the evenings, and we will have some cool evenings ahead, but at lea

meteorologist kari hall has a look at that. i saw rain on my car this morning. >> a little mist this morning. the heavier rain coming in later this morning. so as you get ready to head out, we may need the windshield wipers for a bit. but it's another chilly one, with our start in the upper 40s and low 50s. we're at 47 right now in san jose. then taking a look at the wide view of what's happening, a lot of storms have been lining up and this atmospheric river is starting to make its way closer. but it is a very weak one. as it moves in, it's going to move fairly quickly, starting out with light rain around ukiah, and we're seeing that starting to make its way closer to lakeport. as we go throughout the morning, that will move from the north bay eventually into san francisco and the peninsula by about 9:00. much of the east bay before noon, and then into san jose. notice that by the afternoon it is already clearing out. but we will see some more rain coming in tomorrow morning, so the active weather pattern continues. we'll talk
