nbc's meteorologist bill karins has more on this dangerous cold snap. it's a good thing we're in here. it's tough outside. >> great lakes, northern plains, it's been two or three years -- we had a couple of mild winter storm. this one caught everyone's attention. a little shock to the system. what's interesting about this arctic blast is that it's really a fine line. if you're north of this polar jet stream you're in the cold, cold air. but to the south and including all of the west it's been very mild. even in florida it's mild. even portions of the southern plains and down through texas and louisiana it will be mild. here's what happens a week from now. complete pattern switch. we'll watch the cool air returning to the west and rockies. mild air returns to the east. so this is a week from now. if you enjoyed the warm nis weather in the west it will come to an end. we're dealing with numerous areas with rain showers on the coast and clouds are widespread. that trough that will be over the west is now just off the west coast and now sitting there statio

. >>> now for a look at the national weather, we turn to meteorologist bill karins. good morning. >> you think he's under on the mortgage? probably should resell now. good morning. big arctic air mass heading into the u.s. over the next couple days. the story yesterday was the snow. we started yesterday morning with the snow in mississippi. it caused enough problems there. we did have a couple accidents that turned deadly, unfortunately. then we had the snow that moved up through virginia. the mountains of virginia got nail, picking up 6 to 10 inches of snow. not a lot about richmond or raleigh. an inch to half an inch at most. d.c. didn't really see anything at all. just flurries north of d.c. the storm is, by the way, just barely clipping the islands here. the roads will probably be snow covered there. you can see these snow flurries and snow showers over central jersey. i know new york city has had snow flurries too. that shouldn't be any problem for the roads. as far as what's going to be happening next, this is the last mild day today. it's a beautiful day throu

. >>> now for a look at the national weather we turn to bill karins. >> it's been a busy night. a lot of rough storms. tornado sirens in kentucky and tennessee. here's the recap. four tornadoes so far reported. no fatalities. no towns destroyed. a lot of isolated homes with roofs off. a lot of those things of those nature. the blue dots are wind reports. they are plowing their way through areas of indiana, kentucky, tennessee, through mississippi. we'll include alabama in this and areas of eastern tennessee and kentucky. the most dangerous storms now just rolled through the nashville area. these are tornado warnings. this little cluster has had the strongest winds with it it and the most signs of rotation of tornadic signatures. so anywhere to the east of nashville, give it a half hour and wait until the storms are gone and you'll be safe. also strong storms near richmond and louisville. now a wider view, these storms continue all the way down through mississippi. they are going to roll all the way to the east coast. in the areas of yellow, this line of storms will roll through

nbc meteorologist bill karins has more on this dangerous cold snap. where is it headed? >> it's settled in, just sitting there now. for many of us, especially on the eastern seaboard, this is the coldest morning in a couple years, especially when you factor in the windchills. here's the set up. it's not everyone. we're very mild today, great lakes, oklahoma, texas, through the gulf states, if you're on the other side of the jet stream from the northern plains, the great lakes and northeast, it's just like yesterday if not worse. the windchills this morning, right now the worst of it is in northern new england. this is just the temperatures by itself. single digits from albany to new york city at 11. boston at 11. caribou at minus 17. that's the actual temperature. we're at minus 6 in duluth. when we factor in the wind. this makes it biting and much worse. caribou at minus 30 win chills. that's dangerous territory. all of maine, new hampshire, vermont, burlington at minus 24. the adirondacks of new york back to buffalo, minus 10. this is cold stuff. i mentioned even new y
