karin is back in pretoria, and joins us now. a hugely tense moment and the judge calls lunch. >> reporter: an extraordinary moment to call lunch, david, but what a fast-moving morning, and she's left it at this point where we now know she has two options, find oscar pistorius guilty of the lesser charge of culpable homicide, or to acquit him, and now we're left for an hour or so while that lunch break continues, wondering and deliberating what she is about to tell us when she returns. but it has been such a fast-moving foreigning. we perhaps expected hour upon hour of very, very dense legal terminology, but she has cut through so much of the prosecution's case, so much circumstantial evidence, simply saying she cannot rely upon it. but she only wants to rely on facts, and that it has not proven to her beyond reasonable doubt the charge of premeditated murder that the state has been going for ever since the events of the early hours of february 14th last year. here's a little of what she had to say on that murder charge. >> an in

bill karins joins us now. bill, you know, i was in california over the last three days, and the heat was up there. all the reporters were getting the call, be ready. you might have to get out there to report on the -- >> yeah. what is interesting, we had this fire we have to report on. as a whole, we vice president h -- haven't had the acreage burn. we have been lucky. let's look and show you what happened last night. of course, in cabo san lucas, that was really who took the brunt of the storm. it is still dark there. communications are very difficult in and out of the area. and, of course, when the sun comes up, we start to get the reports in, we show them to you, but it is going to be a devastating blow by all accounts. it was hit extremely hard. as far as what happened, it was about 9:45 p.m. west coast time, category 3, 125-mile-per-hour winds and the eye went right over cabo san lucas. they got the brunt of the storm. and as you can see, a wider shot of it, this storm will slowly weaken as it heads to th

nbc meteorologist bill karins is joining me now with more. bill, this is a crucial next 12 hours here as people are headed home or trying to. >> a lot of people still having fun before they travel home. the biggest danger is going to be lightning. already this year we've had 21 fatalities from lightning strikes across this country. 18 of them, by the way, have been males, three have been female. the general theme, it's a little cheesy, but you hear it roar, you get indoors. that's pretty much the bottom line. lightning can travel as much as five to ten miles outside of a thunderstorm and people have been struck in perfect sunlight away from a storm. if you can hear it, that means you're close enough to get struck. as far as today goes, a lot of the lightning still continues in areas of kansas. it's a very wet morning across areas of wisconsin and central and southern portions of missouri. looks like it's going to be a cloudy, light rain event for you this morning in st. louis, not severe storms. this is summertime stuff. it is hot, it is humi

they're nice. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with more on hurricane odile. have you seen some images? >> we're just getting a lot of firsthand reports. we haven't had a lot of pictures which kind of tells you if you're not getting the images, things may be kind of bad. the direct landfall of the eye was right into the resort area of cabo san lucas. the local newspaper reporter there is now saying that there are injuries from flying debris. there are poles, lights, traffic signals, roofs down all over the city. water tanks were ripped off their base. there's a fire at the hotel. they were hit by a major category 3 hurricane with a direct eye landfall. i think the pictures will be a lot worse that n a lot of us ar expecting. this was the image at 9:45 p.m. winds were at 125. it's only dropped to 115. so it's still a very strong, devastating storm as it's moving right up through the baja peninsula. eventually it will weaken and rain itself out. some of this moisture is expected to make it into the desert southwest. we're not sure exactly how much at this point.

. >>> moving on to weather now, nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with what is shaping up to be a perfect friday. >> nice day. coast to coast, traveling, not many airport problems whatsoever. everybody is pretty mild and if not hot. and yesterday was 97 degrees in montana. well, we did deal with that little bit of rainfall in california. yesterday, officially, at the san francisco airport we picked up about .42, almost half an inch of rain. we didn't see much of this moisture make it any further south than that. look at the water, different imagery than we usually show you. this shows you the moisture in the air. we have what we call a trough moving through the west and that's what sparks showers and thunderstorms over the upcoming weekend in the inner mountain west. may see a sprinkle or two in the northwest. in general, if you get heavy rains over the weekend, it will be shifting through the rockies, through mountainous terrain. areas like salt lake and billings and casper, temperatures will be falling and chance of showers and storms. we're looking at a really nice end to the w
