let's get right to nbc meteorologist bill karins with the details. >> the snow portion of it, very historic by the time we're done with today. good morning everyone. we needed the rainfall because of the drought situations. i know it washed out a lot of people's sunday plans from the mid atlantic through southern new england. we did pick up the rain we needed. what we don't need is april snow. this will be significant april snow. it's already started in the mountainous areas of pennsylvania. now western new york is changing over to snow from rochester and over torts buffalo. that's where we'll see the worst of it. right now the radar is picking up the snow. just outside of state college in altoona and right on interstate 86 heading into western portions of new york. eventually this afternoon, buffalo and pittsburgh will even pick up some of the snow. of course, spring came early. all of the leaves are now on the trees, and that means downed power lines, downed tree limbs. that's going to be the legacy of this storm is how heavy and wet the snow is and how many people lose powers in those ar

here is nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast.ing to be a scorcher today across the east coast. >> not going to be a fun day to be a fireman in new england or the mid-atlantic. because brushfires. they're popping up every single day. and these warm, windy days get dangerous out there. the drought conditions just continue to grow throughout new england, and the mid-atlantic. typically our springs are soggy, you know, and last year it was incredibly wet. just amazing the difference. this year we're already seven inches behind for 2012 as far as rainfall totals compared to average. in most of southern new england, between 5 to 7 inches behind, too. along with our friends in d.c. so really, it's i-95 corridor northward where the drought conditions are getting worse and worse. no rain in sight this week, either. today is going to be very warm. not going to be humid, either. so very dry conditions. that's why the fire danger is going to be high once again this afternoon. we're already in the 60s. wear the summer clothes today. temperatu

nbc's meteorologist bill karins is here with the historic weather. good morning. >> as far as the sounds of breaking tree limbs go, that will be the worst of it today. that's the worst concern, people losing power for an extended period of time. we know how warm it's been this spring. in western pennsylvania and new york the leaves are full on the trees and that's where the snow is now coming down. it's doing to be a heavy wet snow. it started in most areas over the last couple of hours and intensify throughout the day today. all-day snow in the end of april from buffalo, ross chester, down western p.a. it's snowing as far as western portions of maryland and into west virginia. so as far as the areas of greatest concern, we're really here into western new york from the buffalo area out on 8 f to 390 and then back here to pittsburgh and state college on interstate 80 and on the pennsylvania turnpike will be some of the worst drives. how much snow are we talking? for this time of year, this is really a historic snowstorm. we get snow this time of years

nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with the bee tails on this latest historic weather. bill, good morning. now we know where summer went -- or where winter went. i thought summer was coming. >> the crazy thing some of these areas saw snow in october, near halloween. they are now dealing with a snowstorm after being 80 to 90 degrees in the month of march. the storm located over northern new jersey. we have the much-needed rain the east coast desperately need because of drought conditions. the snow is the big story, the leaves are on the trees. we're concerned about power outages and maybe potentially this knocking down significant trees in areas from buffalo to pittsburgh. those cities themselves will probably only get a couple inches, buffalo 3 to 6, pittsburgh 1 to 3. the heavier snow totals south of buffalo from erie through the border area. that's where we could get 6 to 12 inches of snow. lynn, that's unheard of. that's historical for this time of year. a lot of these places have put the plows away, the shovels are gone. yes, they have to dig everything out. >> than
