karina. thank you. now take a look. this is satellite from noaa showing the fire from the air. you see that smoke? those winds as the fire grew overnight. we have abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel standing by with the very latest on conditions. sandhya, we are hoping for relief here. yes, diane. >> you know what? it is not going to arrive immediately. but the crews there, the people there will eventually get a break after tomorrow evening. the extreme, gusty, devastating winds continue in southern california. there are downsloping winds 41 miles an hour right now in malibu. you will notice it's the same for mount lukens truck trail. as we take a look at the fires. the fifth fire that developed this afternoon is the lidia fire, but the largest of all of them, the palisades fire. over 15,000 acres. red flag warnings in effect for those damaging santa ana winds until 6 p.m. tomorrow. not only the gusty winds, but the low humidity, with the extreme fire risk continuing as we take a look at the wind gusts overall in southern california, they're going to remain elevated through t

karina. >> yeah, a lot to show you, dan. both the palisades and eden fire remain out of control right now. and we have seen the number of buildings destroyed or damaged shoot up significantly today. we also know of the five deaths being reported. one is now attributed to the palisades fire. and this gives you an idea of where the fires are burning. the eden is to the northeast near pasadena. the palisades is more near the coast and santa monica. it's also the larger of the two wildfires, and as of right now, the most destructive. the number of structures burned rose to at least 5300 today. aerial images show home after home turned into rubble. the fire has burned 20,000 acres. the destruction from the eden fire rose dramatically today. officials now say as many as 5000 structures were damaged or destroyed this morning. they said it was around 1000. the acreage also shot up to over 13,000. altadena residents showed up to see years of their lives turned to rubble. our sister station in los angeles spoke to people who showed up

karina. >> j.r. while there is that new fire in southern california, firefighters are still battling the palisades and eden fires. late this afternoon, we learned from officials that at least two of the five confirmed deaths are now attributed to the palisades fire. these are also the most destructive fires in southern california history when it comes to structures burned. the palisades fire has now burned 5300 structures, up from 1000 last night. we are getting a0 better view of the destruction from the palisades fire. aerial images show house after house, neighborhoods leveled. it has also grown to nearly 20,000 acres. it is the larger of the two wildfires. and to put that in perspective, that is five times the size of downtown los angeles. the eaton fire continues to grow and remains out of control near pasadena. it is now over 13,000 acres, and the number of buildings damaged or destroyed has shot up dramatically today. this morning during an update, officials put the number at around 1000. and h

diane. >> all right, karina, many thanks for you. we do want to keep our finger on the pulse of things because the fire is spreading to other areas. this is a live picture now from the hollywood hills, which is the scene of yet another fast moving fire. this one called the sunset fire that broke out within the past half hour or so. it all comes on a day in which president biden approved a major disaster declaration for the state. now, that declaration covers areas affected by wildfires and straight line winds, and makes federal funding available to residents. now the fire is burning near runyon canyon, where helicopter reporter chris christie, from our sister station in los angeles, was on the air a short time ago and watched as that fire exploded. and here's how he described it. >> we saw this fire, i think, before la city fire got the call. they have been dispatched out here and that's fire three. that helicopter flying right through the shot right there. that's fire three that has just responded out here to get its first eyes on t

karina just unbelievable. >> the damage it really is. earlier today, we saw the first aerial images of the devastation. you're seeing it behind me schools, churches, a grocery store, restaurants and many more businesses wiped out by the palisades fire. it just seems unfathomable. some evacuated residents have been able to return to burned areas, only to find out tragedy and devastation. >> honestly, everybody is just in shock right now. it's just complete devastation. >> everywhere you look. the images are tragic. home after home burned to the ground, some of the biggest damage tod, some property has been in pacific palisades, an affluent area between santa monica and malibu. expensive mansions one after another, torn apart by fire. there are about 7600 homes in pacific palisades. it's estimated 1000 of them have burned. about 40 homes were destroyed in the castle la mar neighborhood. residents tried desperately to put out the flames using buckets. one neighbor scooped water from jacuzzis and pools to throw on the flames. >> i was bucket
