let's get to nbc meteorologist bill karins. so i'm going to go farther west and let's talk about santa anas, those are two words, i'm not used to hearing, until september. we're in may. >> yeah. i mean, the heat wave is just unprecedented for this iearly i the season. the earliest 100 degree temperatures for recording stations. look at the record highs for today. san diego, alpine, chula vista, el cajon, ramona, new port beach, laguna beach, riverside, every location will see the hottest temperature they heifer had on this date today. yesterday, 99 in l.a. today we're expecting to be around 100. that 106, by the way, the john wayne airport there on the south side of town. 106. no wonder why these fires, once they formed yesterday, flared up in a hurry. the winds will not be as gusty today. that's good. but it will be just as hot and relative humidity will be very low. fire danger is still very high with red flag warnings. forecasts for southern california. we mentioned just about all of these will be record highs today. vegas l

bill karins joins us now to tell us about friday. now saturday, sunday, monday. >> the holiday weekend. shaping up pretty good. the northwest not looking quite as nice as the weather pattern you are in. as we look at saturday, i think we'll sneak in a decent day on day, dry day too. we're looking really nice throughout much of the southeast. on sunday, another little frontal system will come in with showers and storms in the pacific northwest. the rest of california looks pretty good. northern california, oregon, increasing clouds, few showers and inner mountain west. by the time we get to memorial day, still looking at chances of light rain or showers there in the northwest. nothing too heavy there memorial day. not a horrible forecast, not a washout, but not going to exactly be running around outside in the sunshine either. that's your national forecast. >> overall, the weekend forecast, not perfect in the northwest, not a washout either. >> bill karins, thank you. >>> straight ahead, brian williams reveals a big exclusive. >>> the

bill karins is here with your monday forecast. some parts of the country are already feeling the heat. we're talking 100s here. >> people complaining. bringing us a little bit of warmth. 100 degrees in some spots yesterday. let's go to the maps. now that we're in a quiet week ahead, i want to show you the drought situation. we all know about the bright reds in the west. that's the exceptional drought for a couple of years now. north texas, western oklahoma and kansas are really quickly getting drier and drier, and with the really dry soil, i'm afraid we could have a hot summer. yesterday was an indication of that. that was the hottest they've ever been. the blues and the whites show you where the clouds and moisture is. from oklahoma to texas, we have a lot of dry air all the way down the florida. that's why almost zero chances of rain this week. and only in the plains could i tell you about 100 in kansas, and snow just north of duluth. so monday forecast is a quiet day in tp eastern half of the country after a nice weekend. you k

. >>> now for a look at the weather, here's nbc meteorologist bill karins. how's it shaping up? >> it's getting a little more active. >> okay. >> not anything too horrible out there but there will be trouble with the weather, even this morning, diving through ohio valley, you can tell it's summertime where you get the late-night hops into early morning, this has summer written all over it and a lot of warm air out there. lansing creeping through detroit, detroit and toledo right now. just to the south of cleveland near mansfield, ohio there there's some thunderstorms with rumbles in there. i mentioned how warm it is. we're starting our morning with the low to mid-70s. from kansas city. a typical spring morning in the central plains with a storm on its way. we have very windy conditions throughout. high-fire danger from else paso to central kansas. very windy and very dry throughout the day. so if any form, they would spread rapidly. late tonight, minneapolis to nebraska, maybe an isolated tornado or two, witch that to san angelo, texas. >> thank goodness, it's not like last week

bill karins is here with our friday forecast. think we're going to have rain delays tlourt the weekend? >> here's the forecast throughout the next 24 to 48 hours. i have to start with what happened yesterday in san diego. san diego was 95 degrees. you think of san diego, retired on the beach. yesterday was exceptionally warm. it was the warmest may day they've ever seen. we do have some scattered showers in montana through south dakota. we do still have some showers and rain leftover in florida. it's a pretty nice friday, but the sunshine state is going to be wet. still really beautiful weather on saturday through many areas. saturday is the derby. today is the oaks. tomorrow is the derby. the forecast looks really nice. no problems whatsoever. 76ish on saturday. >> that's perfect. >> mid 70s. great for the dresses, the hats. and my horse is dance with fate. >> that's a pretty good name, though. >> pink silks stand out. >> i've never seen you so exciting about something. >> it's the derby. the horse event of the year. i grew up g

nbc's bill karins is here for us this morning. not when you expected in may. snow? >> yeah. the temperatures are just frigid. areas like colorado, i mean, as cold as it gets for this time of year. we showed you the pictures of the severe weather, 35 tornadoes, amazing we made it through without any injuries or fatalities over the weekend. that's great. let me take you through when we're dealing with out there. we got changes coming for you in the west. it has been chilly behind this storm. still a very cold morning. look at denver at 31. boise at 40. salt lake city at 40. we're a little bit warmer up in the pacific northwest. and the theme is going to be warmth. warmth turning to hot. we already have excessive heat watches in effect in areas around san francisco. the storm moved to west. that big blue a, what we call a ridge of high pressure, just going to build over the west, no storms are on the way. temperatures are going to get warmer and warmer as we go throughout the week. we're about 82 at the airport there in l.a. downtown a little warmer than that. we're pretty mild

. >>> bill karins has more on the severe weather and what's in store today. >> what a day yesterday. all the moor moms trying to do plans and you're ducking storms and tornadoes. especially nebraska and kansas were hit the hardest. we had some really big tornadoes on the ground yesterday late afternoon, early evening. all the red triangles were tornado reports. especially the one through southern nebraska. it did miss a lot of cities. it mostly stayed over rural sections. we were fortunate that didn't hit big towns. chicago had a a pretty good thunderstorm complex go through. we have one severe thunderstorm watch left. so just wait for those storms to pass over the next half hour. those contain gusty winds. later today strong storms, large hail and isolated tornadoes again possible. the outbreak won't be as big as yesterday. we'll have isolated tornadoes possible in missouri and iowa. a lot of strong storms though. we have a chance of thunderstorms almost everywhere from the central u.s. right to the eastern sea board. it's very warm and humid and we mentioned, it's snowing in colora

. >>> bill karins is here with a look at today's forecast. more severe weather here, especially in the nation's midsection. >> as they saw, they need the rain, but in some cases too late, especially for the winter wheat. here is what we're dealing with out there. yesterday, we saw five tornadoes or so. most of those were in areas of colorado. they were very weak tornadoes, didn't do any damage. didn't have any reports of injuries or fatalities. all the green dots are reports of large hail. it was widespread. really from the northern plains all the way down to texas, and some of it was big as baseballs. the same area today will watch the threat of severe weather. we have a better chance today of seeing a damaging or maybe even a deadly tornado than we did yesterday. in the area of red up there. if you hear anything really bad, most likely it will come out of iowa or minnesota. hope not. hopefully bad storms that form will miss instead of hit. as far as temperatures, cold behind that storm. only 37 in denver. it is snowing in some places of col

. >> nbc's bill karins is here with details on another hot forecast. breaking temperatures again? >> record highs throughout san francisco and then the fire that happened down in san diego. it's just one of those days and setups where all the firefighters are just nervous. they're geared up and they're ready in case these blazes do start. it's all about potential. 94 yesterday in l.a. san diego was the same. 92 in san francisco. those are warm temperatures for coastal areas. this morning we're starting off very warm. we're almost as warm in l.a. as we are in vegas and phoenix. and it will likely be even hotter this afternoon. red flag warnings up for areas in red. same areas as yesterday. the coastal communities and mountains outside of l.a., santa barbara and san diego. temps 90s to low 100s. wind gusts 30 to 50. it's possible with a high wind warning, some localized gusts up to 80 miles per hour in the mountains outside of san diego. also excessive heat advisory continues from the greater san jose area and just outside of san francisco. so, again, is going to be another hot day

. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins. what do we have in store for us? >> it's a nice day. >> good. >> in many areas of the west, one dry area and then wet weather returns in the northwest for your thursday. through the first week of may, as advertised, we're looking very dry throughout the desert southwest and california. it's really when the dry season begins. you don't expect a lot. but up in seattle, i mean, we're talking about over two inches of rain. typically you average two inches for the entire month. you're well ahead of schedule. and it continues the theme of a very wet spring. and the next storm is coming onto the screen there. and that's the one in store for thursday. you get a decent day today, and then that storm and that frontal system will try to move through thursday afternoon. areas like seattle and portland and will head out thursday night. as far as the forecast is going to go for the rainfall, we're dry today. then as we go into thursday, talking about the darker greens there, a possibility of a half inch, maybe up to an inch especi

for consumer watch, i'm karin caifa. someone on twitter has been leaving hidden money all over san francisco and oakland. so far, hundreds of dollars have been left under benches, in light poles and even near a bart station. kron 4's charles clifford has details on this social media treasure hunt. calling it "an anonymous social experiment for good " someone using the twitter handle @hiddencash, spent all day friday hiding money around san francisco... and oakland. they would then tweet a picture of the hiding spot and a clue to the location. this all started early friday morning, when around 1am @hiddencash left 100 bucks inside this broken phone booth on 7th st in san francisco. the loot was long gone by the time i got there. shep cambell was walking by at the time and asked me why i was taking pictures of a broken phone booth so i told him what was going on. seems like a social stunt to get people running around looking for cash. at that denomination they will probably get a lot of people a few hours later @hiddencash

let's bring in bill karins. 500 years. >> we weren't taking records back then but through geologists or whoever else they figure these numbers out. really bad drought. >> definitely. >> clearly have water for 45 more days, i think that says enough. as far as what we're dealing with today out there, it's the one-year anniversary of moore, oklahoma, tornado, ef-5 and this storm itself will be remembered with the helicopter flying alongside as we knew it would head through the towns and the facts that went along with this is ef-5s are rare enough, moore has been hit by two in 14 years, unheard of. the path was 17 miles. at one point with 200-mile-per-hour winds it was 1.3 miles wide. it was an incredible tornado and that's why it's going to be one of the historical ones we'll talk about for decades to come. nothing like that. warm throughout the middle of the country. some strong storms later but with wind damage, not so much tornadoes watch out peoria, chicago, indianapolis, columbus and late towards charleston, west virginia but nothing like what we saw a year ago. >> check this out.

we say good morning to bill karins who is back in new york. hey, bill. >> hey, i was just bringing back all the memories with you out there in that area a year ago and what an unbelievable event. you witnessed it twice now and the aftermath. want to go through it and tell you how rare of an event this was. the fact that moore, oklahoma, this city in the center of oklahoma was hit by two ef-5 tornados in 14 years, i mean the odds of that are off the charts and where thomas is located near the plaza towers elementary school is where it was classified as what we call an ef-5 tornado, the highest of classifications, literally where everything gets wiped off the face of the earth and that's what it looked like before it got destroyed. a well-built structure literally reduced pretty much just to a slab and, of course, with this tornado the winds were up to 200 miles per hour, the estimated on the ground for 17 miles, what was interesting it was earlier in the day than a lot of our tornadoes and that's why the kids were still in school and that's why
