let's bring in meteorologist bill karins. good morning to you.let's get a sense of what the the weather was like in this area at the time. wore pushing nine hours -- we're pushing nine hours ago, so it was dark, middle of the night. any reports of odd disturbances? >> we haven't heard of anything. no reports of turbulence or bad weather in the region. this satellite loop goes back 12 hours. go back to the beginning of the loop, there were some clouds over southern portions of italy but that was it. the radar contact was lost north of egypt and it was clear then and now. we're in the middle of the day in this region so excellent visibility for any of the search vessels that are in the air or down at the surface. and the other thing people are wondering about is the temperatures in the west -- eastern portions of the mediterranean are very warm. these are 68 to 70 degree water temperatures here. if the plane did happen to go down in this area, alex, people can survive, you know, 12 to 20 hours in water before hypothermia would set in. also the dept

bill karins, tell us what's going on. >> oklahoma, texas, we continue the theme this spring. it hasn't spread up into nebraska. humid air further down to the south. dallas and fort worth, showers and storms that thankfully died off. this line is now weakened. later on today, we're going to do it all over again. it is trying to slice through texas, 16 million people at risk in total, including 2 to 3 million in the orange area, enhanced risk of severe storms, greatest chance of damaging wind will be, austin area, and almost down into san antonio. even corpus christi to houston will get rain. texas has been the bullseye. going back to a year ago, in the last year, 70 inches of rain, that's 24 inches above normal. two feet in addition to what they should have. they're not alone. corpus christi got nailed yesterday. dallas is about nine inches since march 1st. san antonio, over a foot. many of these are five to ten inches above average. over the next three days, more rain throughout the region. possibility of another four inches in areas of central texas, very impressive stuff. b

. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is here. good morning. >> good morning. >> another threat of tornado as soon as. >> yeah, today may be worst than yesterday. we have one super cell that produced all those yesterday in kansas, interstate 70 there that we were concerned. luckily they survived. no fatalities, a lot of structure damage. today, 70 to 80 miles per hour wind gust, racing through wisconsin and st. louis. bigger news, what happens this afternoon and this evening, once again, we have a huge area at risk. that's why we have 28 million people, the state of texas, to minnesota. the greatest concern, though, for tornados is this area here in southern nebraska, central kansas, and then as we go to friday, get away day for the holiday weekend, houston, tle shrevepo shreveport, 17 million at risk, the middle of the country, you can't just get the thunderstorms without the water starting to add up. we'll see the possibility of 4 to 5 inches of rain in east texas. if we get that much rain, we will go et somee south, still feeli

let's go to bill karins. let's take a look what is going on in the mediterranean. >> yes, eliminate what could have happened and the search that's going on and weather conditions for that. this goes over the last 12 hours, the latest image here. it shows clear skies and where the plane was lost. no weather problems whatsoever. in case everyone -- the hoping of finding survivors, water temperatures, 68 to 71 degrees. about 12, 40 hours, big range, someone could last before hypothermia could set in. a block box, it is relatively shallow. air france went down, and that black box was found in 13,000 feet. it is a good possibility we'll be finding and hopefully find out what happened. as far as the weather goes, up in the northwest, storm system went through yesterday, numerous showers, northern idaho, cascades, maybe about a quarter to half an inch, no raining the entire day. but definitely on the cool side. the only heat, down to the south in southern california. even southern california will cool off in the day

bill karins standing by to give us the forecast or the feud. bill, how is it shaping up for the holiday weekend? >> a lot going on. we have a lot of bad weather, but the weekend looks calmer. let's show you what happened in texas yesterday. one early tornado, during the early morning. you can see little flashes there. those are the transformers blowing as the winds tear apart the power lines. the big story that developed later in the day and continues this morning is the flooding. we have had a ton of rain. this was around the austin area. bryant, texas, college station, north of houston, this entire region of southeast texas has gotten pummelled by endless thunderstorms over the last 12 to 24 hours. let me take you to the weather map. this shows you how much rain has fallen. see the bull's-eye over the top of brenham, 16 1/2 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. that's a foot and a half of rain. this is the flash flood emergency for the area. they're doing water rescues. they're telling everyone to stay at high ground wherever you're safe. don'

nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with the latest on what seems to be shaping up as an active week. bill, what's going on? >> this will probably be our biggest tornado week. yesterday, 20 separated tornado reports. in the dallas area this morning, that is no longer severe. just a lot of lightning with that. we have our big trough in the west, keeping you cool and chilly out there. more severe weather in areas of central kansas, oklahoma, all the way through texas. enhanced risk for 14 million people. maybe even a few strong tornadoes. all the cool weather is kept in the west, northwest. temperatures in the 60s. for the most part areas in the 70s. even cooler than normal in the desert southwest. phoenix at 91 is cooler than you should be this time of year. we're still going to watch thunderstorms really lingering in the middle of the country for the next two days. severe thunderstorms are again likely from oklahoma down to dallas. tuesday looks to be a little bit more of the same in areas of the west. scattered showers in the rockies. temperatures 60s to 70s. it's not cold you like
