i want to bring in karl penhaul, who is our reporter on the ground. karl, what are you hearing from there? >> reporter: yes, just in the last couple of minutes, we have seen a wide -- of jets at the airport. at that stage, three broke off from the crowd. they believe that is the jet that is bringing ouflted president zelaya. back to honduras, to help him fulfill his place, to reclaim the presidency. now, even though they can see this jet, that they believe it is the president's jet, things from here are getting very tense. about half an hour ago, protesters on the other side of airport tried to break through the fencing to get at this airport. at that point, the military opened fire. with bullets and also with tear gas. now, what -- witnesses to that are saying a number of people were wounded. they also say three of their comb ralds were killed. we don't have any independent confirmation yet. from either the red cross or from honduras officials of the interim government set up by the coup. evidence of blood stains on the vehicle that was used to take o

karl penhaul is at the airport there. karl, set the scene. i understand some pro-zelaya demonstrators are marching toward the airport. who do you see? >> reporter: very much, brooke, the line is being drawn in the sand right now. behind me one of the vehicles that's just gone past, a pick-up truck with riot police and another one has just gone past. there are now literally of both riot police an soldiers standing just down there about 20 yards away from where i am now. a military helicopter has just flown overhead. on the other side of that line of riot police and soldiers, thousands of marchers who are marching in support of the ousted president manuel zelaya. when i say "thousands," i can tell you that they were coming along a four-lane boulevard and i looked from a bridge and that line stretched back for about a mile and a half. i still couldn't see the end of that march. it's by far the biggest march that we have seen in support of the ousted president in a week since he was deposed by a military coup. though supporters just want to make

cnn's karl penhaul has been following his every move. >> reporter: he was back. in his homeland. it was a victory that amounted to just a few steps and a few short minutes. president manuel zelaya stayed just long enough to pose hoisting a rusty chain that divides nicaragua and honduras, but not long enough for the honduran military that ousted in him last month's coup to carry out his threat to arrest him if he tried to return. zelaya called on supporters inside honduras to rise up against the military coup but urged them to use peaceful means. "look, we have no guns. we have no guns," he said. but it's difficult to see how mr. zelaya can advance deeper into honduras, because all along the route there are roadblocks like this one, with soldiers under orders to arrest him. a few kilometers away inside honduras, crowds of his supporters gathered, the violent clashes broke out with soldiers and riot cops. hundreds of troops blocked the advance, stopping them from meeting zelaya and backing his bid to reclaim the presidency. karl penhaul is live from honduras. again, zelaya blocked from returning to his country.t is his next move? >> reporter: that really is the big question now. we understand when he was unable to land here in honduras, he flew to el salvador and overnighted there, where he met with a number of latin american presidents. right now, for the last few hours, we have not been able to get any bead on where he is right now or what his plans are. we can't get in contact with his advisors either. we had heard earlier he may head back to washington to continue with the diplomatic push and meet once again with the organization of american states, but we hear on the ground here from protest organizers, his supporters, he will at one stage again during the course of this week try to come back. if he does, it's unlikely he will fly in once again. it seems much more likely he will try to cross across one of the border crossings there and to do that, he would have to be surrounded by his supporters. they in fact would have to draw up a human cordon around him to stop the interim government
