i want to bring in karl penhaul who is live on the story right now.ssues with this story is just the sensitive nature with which the surviving family members have been treated as they go to that mountain meadow, the closest spot they can be to where their loved ones died. you've had a chance to speak to some of those family members. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, ashleigh. the other day at one of the memorial sites, we did speak to the sister of one of the iranian families. and she, first of all, was describing the good things about her brother's life. but now i get the sense that the families are in a different emotional phase. a lot of them are saying here in the city of marseilles and traveling each day to the memorial site. i was talking to the brother of one of the men who died in that crash. he says he gets up in the morning and his emotions range between sadness and very deep rage. he said that it is lufthansa that has invaded his privacy. he said he never wanted lufthansa in his life. but now lufthansa will be there deeply ingrained on every f

cnn's karl penhaul is live with more. karl what can you tell us?john this is that ship and this scene is unfolding right now. we've already seen women and children brought down the gang plank. we're told that there are migrants of ten different nationality nationalities. we understand they're syrians fleeing the civil conflict there. we're told there are over 100 women and over 60 children. we understand that some of the women are pregnant. it's unclear which boats their plucked from right now. some representatives of the charities here at dock side suggest that perhaps this boat had set sail from egypt, rather than libya. of course that says that migrant problem that has spread across the coast of north africa. and all of them being run by human trafficking rings. and that is what makes it so dramatic for these migrants. they have been beaten they have been robbed on their way to get to port. and when they get to port many times they're locked beneath the hold of these rust-bucket ships and set adrift in the mediterranean. the human trafficking ri

karl penhaul is joining us live from catania in italy right now.s the latest on the recovery and the investigation? >> the more you look at all this wolf you just see that this is a myigrant crisis escalating with every hour that passes. in terms of the weekend shipwreck as you rightly point out, a syrian and tunisian being accused of captaining that boat and being involved with the smuggling ring they are under investigation by the italian prosecutor and also what the italian prosecutor is looking to do is interview the survivors who were plucked from that ship and to find out a little bit more about exactly how many migrants were on board there, who possibly was behind organizing the people smuggling racket and so that hopefully could help italian authorities to crack down on this in the future. if you look at the panorama right now, it is horrendous. two italian navy ships currently making their way to sicily with more than 440 migrants on board, including 100 women and more than 50 children. those have been plucked from six different migrant bo

. >> our karl penhaul joining us live from italy. what's the latest as far as the victims are concerned, the survivors? what do we know karl? >> well wolf we're expecting in the next couple hours or so 27 survivors from that weekend shipwreck to arrive here in the port of catania. they will be off-loaded and given health and psychological checks and the authorities will want to debrief them to find out what happened. saturday night early into sundays because initial survivor reports suggested that maybe between 7 to -- 700 to 950 people had been on board that vessel. the italian prosecutors said we don't know that for sure. he will want to get to the bottom of that to find out how many people may have died because only 28 survivors have been picked up 24 dead bodies have been picked up and fear is the remainder could be trapped in the hull of that vessel which has sunk to a depth of more than one mile deep. but, of course then look to the rest of the day and you only get the impression that this migrant crisis is escalating because in

here's our karl penhaul with more. >> reporter: just above the hills of this sleepy farming village, this shepherd says he witnessed the final seconds of flight 9525. i saw the plane heading down along the valley and i said, my god, it's going to hit the mountain. i ducked my head and said that's going to be spectacular. then it seemed to veer left. then after that, i saw the smoke. he says he was walking his dogs when the airbus slammed into a ravine just over six miles northeast of here. that was a week ago. rugged mountain terrain, freezing weather and gusty winds have made recovery operations treacherous. the rescue chief believes the most painful task may soon be complete. quicker than initially forecast. we may still have two days' work to recover pkov ecover body pary or monday we should have have gathered up the bodies and possessions, he says. investigators have a hunch the flight data recorder may be buried. once all the body parts are removed, we'll begin to rake to remoss pieces of soil. everything will be raked to see if the black box is buried, he says. until now, recov

our karl penhaul is near the crash scene right now in the french alps and also with me is aviation analyst mary schiavo. karl, some of the first video to come out of the search efforts on the ground, up close and personal where we're seeing some of the wreckage, they are literally raking through the dirt at this point. and it just reminds me so much of the recovery efforts of 9/11. can you take me through the process of what they're doing to get the remains of the plane and the remains of the people to the places they have to be? >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, ashleigh. i think it's interesting to see that video because i actually hiked up to that crash zone a few days ago. it is very rugged mountain and very difficult to get there. but that video gives us an impression how tough it is. the recovery workers at some point almost seem to be clinging on with their fingernails because the side of that valley is so steep. you also may see that expert mountaineers are working in pairs with the investigator just to keep them safe and stop them falling down. there is a little bit of good news beca

karl penhaul is there. >> reporter: 446 migrants carol, in addition to syria and egypt as you rightlyia and they are trying to break out of poverty and really just looking at those people coming down the italian navy vessel you get an indication of how bad things are at home. women carrying babes in arms and children so small they could hardly walk but they take their first steps toward a new life. and crucially as well italian authorities on hand looking out to see if any members of these human trafficking rings are within that group to arrest them to try to bust up these gangs that are really preying and making a fast buck off human tragedy. this particular boat set sail from egypt. the migrants were loaded bit by bit on one fishing vessel and after a few days they were transferred to another fishing vessel. none of these boats sea worthy. they are rust buckets and then finally they were rescued by the italian navy. they are back on dry land now. now being given medical checks and in the process of identification carol. >> karl, i know you have talked to some of these migrants. what

cnn's karl penhaul is there. he joined us on the phone. karl what can you tell us about this ship?hour, we've been watching people 446 migrants get off an italian naval vessel. they were rescued after eight days afloat in the mediterranean. according to early survivor accounts they said they actually set sail from egypt. aboard the ship egyptians, there are syrians fleeing the civil conflict there. and there are africans from the fall of west africa as well. we've seen poverty and the fall of state and conflict areas as well. and this is really just looking at the migrants departing the ship you really get a sense of how bad things must be. these people cheating death just to get a chance at a new life. we have seen women getting off aboard carrying their babies in their arms. we have seen young children toddlers so small that they can hardly walk and yet, they're taking their first steps towards a new life. some of them waving clearly glad to be here. again, according to early survivor accounts. some of these people say that they've been moved to six different ships over the last

cnn's karl penhaul has been talking with the migrants listening to their stories and joining us liveight now. tell us what you're hearing from these people who have arrived specifically the people who arrived there today? >> well today, wolf italian officials were keen to keep the media from talking to the migrants to find out about their journey. they were putting the priority on getting them through medical checks and identified and processed for the start of their asylum applications to begin. nevertheless aide workers went inside the tents where they were being looked after and they came out and have told us first of all harrowing stories from egyptians, syrians, somalis who say they were at sea for up to 20s days in a fishing boat the first sailed from egypt then towards the coast of libya and then the migrants had to transfer to a different fishing boat even more unsea worthy than the previous one. this is a tactic that officials say is being used by people smugglers to try to keep the authorities off their tracks. but the migrants that were on those boats said they didn't have
