karl penhaul, cnn, germany. >> thanks so much karl penhaul. meanwhile, president obama wants leaders to keep the pressure on moscow for what he calls its aggression toward ukraine. let's go now to cnn senior white house correspondent, jim acosta. all right. so nightfall there. what's on tap for tomorrow as things get under way? >> well the agenda for tomorrow is very much like the agenda for today, frederica. the president is going to be trying all that he can to keep these g-7 leaders united when it comes to applying this economic pressure these sanctions on russia for its military involvement in ukraine. and we heard the president talk about this a great deal today. he met with german chancellor angela merkel, the host of that g-7 summit. came out of that meeting with a statement saying angela merkel and president obama both agree that the duration of sanctions on russia and the duration of sanctions on vladimir putin will be minute plunged upon and tied to russia's behavior and whether or not they respect ukraine's sovereign tirk the messag

i want to bring in karl penhaul who joins us from germany south of munich. leaders arrived, there were large protests. you were in the midst of it. and they now want to shut down the meeting when it gets under way in a few hours from now. what are their main issues? >> well, certainly the aim of the protesters is to shut down that meeting which is now taking place at a castle about 15 kilometers from where we are now. but so far, protesters have not had much luck this morning. throughout the entire morning with their actions, with their marchers, they have been playing a game of cat and mouse with the police forces. at one point we saw a group of black-clad protesters trying to blockade a major highway to stop supplies going up to the castle where the g7 leaders are meeting. but that failed. the police drove them back. it was a peaceful demonstration but the police simply encircled the demonstrators. here on this highway as well, another attempt by a small group of protesters to blockade the highway there. they succeed the in doing that for a short period of

cnn's international correspondent karl penhaul is there. as you see, carl, when they talk about pressing issues, what specifically have you heard them protesting? >> good morning, christi and victor. let me set the scene a little bit for you. there are thousands and thousands of protesters now gathering close where some of the richest leaders of the most industrialized nations will be gathering. these are the thousands who hope obama and other world leaders a very hostile recession. they are against the summit. they believe that it is simply a club that have gathered together to divide up the world economy and world politics for their own benefits and not for the benefits of their citizens or for the global community. and, so, there are groups here and simply concerned citizens and they have concerns. some are against military spending. combat against world poverty and some end the world's refugee crisis. some there for animal rights. huge concerns. but they share a common dream. that, they say, creating a better, fairer world of everybody

joining me right now, cnn's senior white house correspondent jim acosta and karl penhaul. let me begin with you and the protests. what's on tap today? e protesters have been using for the last several days. this has been home to several thousands protesters whose vow has been to disrupt or even stop the g-7 summit which is being held about ten miles away from here in a castle. they haven't been successful doing that. there are many different groups with different ideas talking about greens, leftist, anarchists and concerned citizens, but uniting under a common banner because they believe the group of seven is simply a club, an elite fat cat politicians that are trying to divide up world politics and the economic pie for their own benefit, not for the benefit of citizens or the world community. beyond that common banner, as i say, a myriad of ideas. there are groups calling for tougher action to combat world poverty. ightly they are restricting their movements. have a chance to make their voices heard. >> thank you. president obama not allowing that to distract from his mis
