here's crete, here's karpathos. the area that they've really focused in on appears to be right about there. this map shows us what the surface currents are in the mediterranean. in general, they're ail heading towards the east. but then you see these lines. they got eddies out here. some of these begin to curve to the north, they split off. this line will then continue all the way back up and to the east of cyprus, almost to the coastline of israel. the currents are much different, they're kind of widespread. the longer this goes, the more spread out all of this debris will get throughout this region. here's a closer up map. still has a ways until you get to the cyprus area. this isn't a fast drift. this is a slow drift that all this stuff will be moving. we mention the clouds out to the west. we're waiting to see if those will slide over into the forecast area. they should do that tomorrow. the question is at what time. they're six hours ahead of east coast time. this is friday morning in cairo. this is through the

with help from the greek military which is searching 130 nautical miles southeast of the island of karpathosran pilot is captain desmond ross. the captain of the aviation services live from istanbul. you have been watching the developments and the information we have been able to confirm. give me your read on what happened to this flight. >> you are right. a developing story. a lot of speculation, but my gut feeling is telling me there's been a cataclysmic event on the airplane. the confusion over the emergency message or transmission that people are talking about. it had to be a radio call from the cockpit, which we are told did not happen or a transponder signal. you can dial a code on the transponder and it shows there is an emergency on the aircraft or the emergency locater transmitter on impact with the water or ground which emits a signal to hone in on the crash site. there is not much else. if there was a signal of any sort, we should know what it was. the usual sorts of confusion. it's a bit early. at 37,000 feet, flat, no issue normally for an aircraft unless something -- the pilots

we have a general idea we believe where the plane went down, as near the karpathos island. you can see on the map here, the area, 173 miles from the coast in egypt. it was heading in that direction when it went off radar. one of the things they're using to help find more information about if there is indeed debris down there, with the u.s. navy. a p3 owe ryan, an old aircraft but amazing technology, one of the things that this plane can do is it can drop buoys that come out with a parachute and land on water, and can pick up indications if there is anything on the water. the sea state is important. the more waves there are, the harder it is for technology to work but it can pick up floating debris. there's a debate, if it's debris from the flight or whether debris. there's a lot of garbage that floats in the ocean. generally authorities get pieces of debris, if it's on a ship, take photographs and begin examining the photographs to see if there are serial numbers on pieces. that of course, the most help of what they can do. as we take a look in the area, there are ships tha

found 130 miles south of the greek island of karpathos. >> tom, bring us up to date. >> reporter: wellek military saying the military radar seems to have captured the plane descending pi from 37,000 feet down to 27,000 feet. and at the same time, the plane seems to have been doing some sort of a 360, spinning in the air. was that a part of the plane, were the pilots trying to maneuver the plane, or was the plane coming apart at that moment and are we seeing pieces of the plane coming down on greek military radar. the civilian radar images that we have don't show that. it simply shows the plane stopping dead at 37,000 feet. the question now is going to be was this a catastrophic failure involving a rupture of the fu fuselage and maybe a mechanical issue or an explosive. third possibility would be a mechanical issue and a crew error trying to deal with that issue. at the moment, we have seen the military responding to the scene now on the ground, the navy responding to the scene on the this. they're very concerned that something catastrophic happened at 37,000 feet. the question is, was

nevertheless, the search continuing around the island of karpathos and asking for more assistance fromimagery which they think will help them to explain what happened. at the moment, ships converging on that beacon which we know went up down, emergency signal being sent up. and planes are in the air and the greeks have said there's a submarine on stand by. now to go over the time line briefly again, 12:48, greek airport controllers spoke to the pilot and he was quote in good spirits. he even thanked the controller in griese. 39 minutes later they tried to reach out to him and he did not respond. they tried to reach out to him on emergency frequency, still nothing. and then 12 minutes after that, the plane took the swerve one way, and then the other way, and then a sudden drop, that's where we lose the plane. from 37,000 flight, you could expect the plane perhaps to disintegrate. so they're looking on the mediterranean at the moment and they cannot see any debris or oil slicks floating. meanwhile, the families waiting at cairo airport terminal 1 have not learned anything. we're learning
