kasie? >>> officials in oakland have identified nine more of the victims of last week's deadly warehouse fire, as new video surfaces of police inside the facility just two months before it went up in flames. authorities have released names of the 26 of the 36 people that died on friday. they've added they've identified 35 of the victims and nearly all of the building has been searched. one of those victims, 35-year-old alex gosan, posted this video before the fire broke out. we're learning new details about the final moments for those lost in the inferno. officials say some of the victims were able to text loved ones with messages of good-bye and i love you. they say the remains of some were found apparently shielding one another from the flames. meanwhile, nbc news obtained video from october showing police inside the facility. the embattled manager oe warehouse told nbc earlier in the week police had come to the building while responding to a neighbor's party. the footage brings up new que

nbc's kasie hunt is in washington with more.sheinelle, good morning. donald trump today is at war it seems with the intelligence community after "the washington post" put up a story overnight saying that not just -- the russians didn't just interfere in the u.s. election to try and sew chaos or affect it, but they did it specifically to help donald trump win the election. now trump's team fired back within minutes of this story going up online. they said in part, quote, of the intelligence community, these are the same people who said saddam hussein had weapons of mass destruction. the election ended a long time ago in one of the biggest elecl history. now, there are some new additional details this morning. "the new york times" reporting that part of this assessment is based on an analysis that the russians also hacked into the republican national committee, but that none of that information was released. you'll remember we saw plenty of e-mails from hillary clinton campaign chairman john podesta as well as e-mails from a hack

let's start where we left off with kasie.his not so subtle dig by president obama basically saying, listen, if i had been in this thing, i would have won it. what do you make of that? >> he's right. if you look at where he stood in the two elections he did win, he won 51% of the vote both times he ran for president. when you're looking at donald trump's 46%, it's pretty clear that president obama, who has high approval ratings right now, would have won in a head-to-head match-up. what i do disagree with him on is we did not run on a progressive vision. i think the clinton campaign was up against wikileaks, podesta e-mails, every single morning, russia -- >> before that, there had been this notion that the candidate herself was not as progressive as a bernie sanders. it was sanders who had to drag her to this idea of a minimum -- a federal minimum wage and college affordability, things like that. you dispute that? >> i think certainly bernie sanders being in the democratic primary did bring hillary clinton to the left on certa

also with me, kasie hunt. good morning, michael. i want to start with kasie. president obama, he's going to strike back. he's already spoken to vladimir putin. what could he really do? we're talking about putin, a guy who not just controlled russia. this guy controls $85 billion worth of assets. some have said he's the most dangerous man in the world. what could president obama actually do? >> well, we do know that the president is already talking to npr ahead of the press conference he's doing, essentially saying the united states is going to strike back at the russians at a time and place of our choosing. the president's words. i think the question is whether he goes after putin personally. and specifically his financial assets. we know that the russian president has a network of financial assets. there's speculation over where they might be stored and question about what the united states could do to go after that network. there's a difference between the president himself and his associated, the russian president and his associates. the united states to a

i want to begin with msnbc's kasie hunt in dc. we're hearing from democrats about this effort to throw a monkey wrench into the electoral college. now, we have seen the dump trump train go around and around and eventually go nowhere. what's actually the plan today? >> reporter: well, it's very likely that the trump, dump trump train will end up in exactly the same spot. at the end of the day today, it started but hasn't stopped some democrats from calling this into question. there is, of course, the overall fact that hillary clinton is far ahead in the popular vote tally by over 2 million votes, which animated some people and all this information about the russian hacking and the tintent to help donald trump. one elector said they'll vote against it but john podesta, the former campaign chairman for hillary clinton also talked to our own chuck todd over the the weeke weekend and raised questions about it. >> what did trump inc. know and when did they know it? i think those are important questions and the electors has a right to kn

kristen welker outside of trump tower and kasie hunt on capitol hill. let me start with you, kristen. yes, there was opposition to sessions and price but if the transition team wanted a fight, you think they've got to get one with scott pruitt, no? >> reporter: they sure do. he is a lightning rod and perhaps clearest sign yet that president-elect donald trump does in fact plan to scale back and roll back all of those executive actions that president obama put in place to try to deal with climate change. as you mentioned, scott pruitt is someone suing the epa, but perhaps more worrisome for democrats and environmentalists, he's publicly questioned whether climate change is a reality. let's read some of the reaction we get from senate democrats. chuck schumer saying he's out of touch with the american people and with reality, craig. this from senator ed markey, denying climate change makes him unsuitable to lead the epa. expect a very big fight over this appointment. and meanwhile, breaking news. we are learning that mitt romney is here in new york not to

msnbc's kasie hunt from our washington bureau. so big day in donald trump land. we heard a little bit from members of his team, of course. we've heard from them, but how are they feeling about the electoral college today? >> reporter: well, chris, i think this is a continuation of the theme we've heard from them since the election ended which is to say they view all of this as an attempt to cast doubt on donald trump's election and very indignant about that. we've seen that in a host of forums since the both sides tussled about it and heard them talk about the popular vote. kellyanne conway repeatedly makes the vote, hey, we won this electoral college. the popular vote was not the contest that mattered at the end of the day but this conversation is happening for that, partly for that reason. the fact that hillary clinton is ahead in the popular vote by, really, extraordinary margin and the fact we learn new information in these weeks about this russian intervention in the election. the intelligence agencies come to the conclusion with high confidence that the rus

i want to bring in former chair of the dnc and nbc's kasie hunt. let's start this question of john bolton. the name kind of entered the mix a few weeks ago, and it caught people by surprise because you have donald trump campaigning against the bush doctrine, campaigning against the iraq war, and you have john bolton out there saying the iraq war was the right thing to do. do we have a sense of what it is that attracts trump to bolton, poteially? >> i think it's less about iraq and more about iran, to be honest. the policy and the potential dismantling of the deal that president obama cut with iran could be one of the first things this administration does, basically without the consent of congress if they go about it in the right way. my sense is that there are some forces inside the trump campaign, potentially outsiders like sheldon adelson who are pushing for bolton to have more of a role. at one time we picked tillerson at the top, but don't worry, you have your guy. if you want to tell us how to approach this, you can go ahead and get in touch w

john mccain, another influential republican, saying to our colleague at nbc news kasie hunt that this relationship, quote, needs to be examined. so that's all the backdrop going forward on the big prize within this administration, the seat at secretary of state. it looks increasingly like it's going to be rex tillerson. >> what did we learn? >> we heard a lot. you played some of the most important clips. the one is the idea of the cia's analysis suggesting that russia was trying to influence this election. donald trump basically saying this is ridiculous. he thinks this thing is all over and this is the democrats pushing this idea forward. there was one other note that was striking. he was speaking about his son-in-law jared kushner. he basically said he would like jared to be doing deals going forward overseas, including an effort to try to bring peace to the middle east. it just sort of reenforces an idea that trump is going to be speaking about the business entanglements, conflicts of interest not just for donald trump but ivanka and his son-in-law. this will be addressed in what's

kasie hunt joins us by phone from the army navy game in baltimore. you spoke to john mccain at that game. what was his reaction? >> hi, betty. pretty interesting one, actually. the one concern here for the trump team, and this has been true broadly of many of his cabinet picks but particularly in this case has been how will the confirmation hearings go on capitol hill? will it be okay with republicans to vote in favor of many of these picks? it was an issue that rudy giuliani, quite frankly, had if he faced potential confirmation as secretary of state and i spoke briefly to senator john mccain. he's here attending the army/navy game and he along with some of his other colleagues like senator lindsey graham expressed reservations about russia's actions. they've been very vocal about it. mccain is planning hearings into russia's activities as a separate subcommittee on the armed services committee which he chairs. take a listen to what he had to say when i asked him if he had any concerns about tillerson's nomination as secretary of state and his relat

hans in the pentagon, kasie hunt here in new york. hans, let me start with you. you itemized what the sanctions are. you've got intelligence officials being tossed out of the country, you've got some agencies over there. from a practical standpoint, what is this going to do to russia? does this have any bite in terms of what russia is or isn't able to do? >> in terms of the four individuals that have been named and put sanctions on, these are high-ranking officials, the head of the gru. this is russia's intelligence agency. it's unlikely that will actually have any effect. that's mostly symbolic. unless you think high-ranking gru officials are day trading at td america trade in the states, this probably isn't going to affect them much. symbolically, it's very important. it gives an indication that the white house and the full intelligence agencies who are pinning this on russian intelligence at the very top of the gru. now you get to the 35 diplomats that were basically working as spies. they didn't call them spies, but the state department came very close to tha

. >>> kasie hunt joins me from baltimore where the president-elect is attending the army/navy football game later today. tillerson was at trump tower today. what do we know? >> reporter: we do know that meeting happened earlier today. the spokeswoman hope hicks confirming to the pool that he visited trump tower and of course our andrea mitchell as you just talked about at length breaking the news that tillerson is going to be secretary of state, or has been offered the position of secretary of state, and that exxon mobil is taking steps to make that happen. so the question of course then, what happens next, and what in particular happens with the focus on tillerson's ties to russia? you were talking a little bit about that with andrea mitchell and that takes on particular significance in light of what we have also been talking about today, which is the cia assessment that russia interfered in the united states elections for the benefit of donald trump. that piece of it specifically is new. donald trump's team reacting within minutes of "the washington post" putting this story up last n

let's go to kasie hunt in washington.t it this morning about using mike pence to get legislation through the house. he's -- house and senate obviously, he's a man who knows how washington works. how do you think that will work on the hill in practice? are there any concerns? >> well, i think objective one for trump coming in here was to make sure that she was building brujs to republicans. that's what mike pence has done on capitol hill with mitch mcconnell, with paul ryan. he obviously has a previous relationship with paul ryan that's very strong. and he's been the person that we have seen three or four times since the election even on capitol hill. but there is some risk here, i think, as i talk to democrats. they're watching what's happening, and they're saying, this might be a signal that republicans aren going to do the kinds of things under trump that we thought maybe we could work with them on. this is, in their view, a very traditional idealogical republican. and i think there's a lot of reluctance and nervousness
