we go to iowa now, kasie hunt. lets talk about how things are playing out there in iowa. how are things playing out on the house side in general, kasie? >> reporter: it's great to see you. i'm using this trip in iowa to visit some of the establishments that we love here in the 2016, soon to be 2020, this is a t-shirt store, one of the places i love to come to, but we're here now in 2018 because this is also very representative of the house battleground as a whole. we're taking a trip through the heartland starting here. these are the districts that when republicans took back the house in 2010, these are the districts that flipped, and of course this is the area of the country that ultimately sent donald trump to the white house, so we wanted to come and sort of take the temperature and see where voters really are, and what we're learning is that while on the democratic side, health care is absolutely breaking through as an issue. the president's last minute focus on immigration is something that's clearly resonating and breaking through with a lot of republican voters. ta

kasie, if i can begin with you. this contentious battle is opening some deep partisan rifts in the senate and across the country. is there any sense from either side how they want to try to heal this divide? >> reporter: you're right, lester. the country is more divided than ever and so is the senate and this fight turned those divisions into open wounds. one republican said that the senate has absolutely hit rock bottom. and tonight we are exactly one month out from the midterm elections. both sides expect an absolute brawl. republican majority leader mitch mcconnell says that the protesters, and he called them the mob, have done what he wasn't able to do by himself, and that's energize the republican base. but for democrats, the stts i red states to keep their seats, but it could make the path to win back the house for democrats that much easier. lester? >> hallie, what are you hearing from the president? >> reporter: the president tonight is dismissing those protests we've seen here in washington. he's dismissing

on capitol hill, kasie hunt. and kevin sirilli for bloomberg news. kasie hunt on capitol hill, let me start with you. where the action is. this vote, when do we expect it and does it still look like it is a kavanaugh confirmation by the slimmest of margins? >> it does, steve. we do not expect a change in the outcome here. forgive me. i'm going to. this ear piece out because i'm hearing myself in my ear. basically they moved the timing of the vote up a little bit a couple of hours. we're now expecting it around 3:00, maybe 3:45. so there have been 30 hours of debate overnight from the sort of start -- in the wake of the original procedural vote that you saw. and you are going to see a couple things here on the floor that are going to look different but aren't actually going to make a substantive difference here. you're going to see mike pence presiding over the senate. normally you see mike pence when it's going to be a 50/50 vote and you need to break the tie. that's not going to be the case here. he just wanted to come for the momentous occasion. he

i'm joined right now by kasie hunt, nbc news capitol hill correspondent. phil rucker, white house bureau chief for "the washington post." kasie, i have a lot of hopes that maybe murkowski will show some leadership. she seems more like a leader than the others. how do you figure the order of succession in the decision making of those left to decide? >> reporter: chris, i think that your sense on lisa murkowski is correct. and she actually spent the afternoon here at the capitol, meeting with survivors of sexual assault and abuse. many of whom came out of her office in tears, after having talked about their own experiences. she has very carefully avoided our cameras, so we haven't spoken to her today. but everyone that i've talked to, all of my sources and senators in leadership who i've spoken to off the record suggest, or, excuse me, on background i should say, not off the record, have suggested that she may be more willing to potentially play a vote, a "no" vote. now, susan collins, on the other hand, they tend to say the opposite. that she has been throu

joining me now is kasie hunt. kasie, the problem when i first heard mitch mcconnell say that is a problem we've seen a few times in this process, the willingness to prejudge something that is meant to give you more information to make a decision. >> reporter: well, ali, this has been mitch mcconnell's strategy the entire way along. he is simply insisting that the process will unfold as he wants it to unfold and he's making adjustments only when he's forced to, i.e. when senators flake, murkowski and collins told him, hey, you have to have a hearing, we're not ready to vote without an fbi investigation. he does know where the votes are, but this is a very specific political strategy. now, i think there is an increasing sense here on capitol hill that we have reached a point where a decision needs to be made. there needs to be a vote, people need to say yes or no and we need to move on to the next phase of whatever this is going to be. i will say that with the caveat that it's possible that the fbi will find somethi

kasie, you're right on the border of two big very close races, an embattled democratic senator there in missouri, a close gubernatorial race in kansas. how do national politics play into these two very different races? >> reporter: and don't forget a key suburban house race as well on thes c on the kansas side of the line. we are in kansas city, missouri, keeping a close eye on claire mccaskill who is running a tough race against the attorney general josh hawley. mccaskill has quite frankly lucked out a couple of times in the opponents that she's run against. she's really hung on in territory that has gotten increasingly red, and she's in more danger now than she has been. you know what mccaskill is like. she's kind of a fierce personality. she's a fighter. she's been frustrated with those national politics that you mentioned because some of the things that have played out in washington, the government shutdown earlier this year, but then more recently the kavanaugh hearings she feels frustration reportedly with some of her democratic leadership and others who have made her race hard

joining me now is kasie hunt and party alexander. kasie you're looking at the whip count.t took? >> reporter: honestly one of those rare occasions where we go into a high stakes vote and we have no idea. those four undecided senators are the ones we should still be focusing on. they kind of run in a spectrum based on my sources. i would point susan collins on one side as somebody who wanted to find out a way to get to yes. and lisa murkowski on the other who seems according to all accounts like the person most likely to vote no and then you have senator jeff flake who really no one has been able to get inside his head lately and senator joe manchin who wants to be able to vote yes but doesn't don't the deciding vote to confirm kavanaugh. so you have a very high stakes game of chicken to a certain extent right now with manchin waiting for these other senators to take the first leap. willie, i want to underscore, i think we can show everyone a little bit of what it was like to be up here at the capital yesterday with these protests that have been going on, and this is a real

kasie, let me start with you. what are you hearing there as you track down senators? >> reporter: well, craig, a couple important notes for you, actually. first of all, susan collins walked by reporters outside that secure area where we're not allowed to have a camera present, and she said this, quote, it appears to be a very thorough investigation, but i'm going back later today to personally read the interviews. that's really all i have to say right now. an interesting way of framing it. she says she does think that it was thorough. she still wants more information, noteworthy, she did not come out with the conclusion that you noticed, mitch mcconnell has said, lindsey graham has said and also importantly senator jeff flake told reporters that he does not see any additional corroborating information. so that's two of our critical people here, jeff flake seeming to go along with the emerging party line that there's no corroborating information for the allegations in this new fbi report. senator collins still seeming to need some more time for it. i will say we also g

kasie, bring us up to date. where do things stand. this is all but a lock on judge kavanaugh's confirmation to the supreme court. >> well, nicolle, i think you got a glimpse of just how intense this protest has been. i'm going to take my ear piece out. this is what it has been like all week on capitol hill. and it has reached really a fever pitch right now with senator manchin and senator collins both announcing they were going to vote the same way and they were going to vote to approve judge kavanaugh. you saw the emotion and the intensity with which people have approached those senators. the literal pressure that they have been under kind of through these hallways. and many of them are moving into the hart atrium as well to try to continue all of this. but the reality is we've also seen a lot of people with very disappointed looks on their faces. i saw one woman crying. she listened to senator collins on her cell phone. this is something that there are thousands of people here frankly at the capitol that are very, very invested in.

kasie hunt has the latest from capitol hill. and i want to start over with you, kase, because there seems to be a theme emerging. many don't like what the president said about christine blasey ford, but is that actually going to matter when they cast their vote? >> that's a question we haven't been able to get a good answer to. i do know there's a sense of exasperation that the president would involve himselfself in this way in something that is still pretty delicate here on capitol hill. republican leadership working hard to press forward with this vote, insisting it's going to happen this week. as you mentioned at the occupy of the show mitch mcconnell would have to take some pretty procedural steps today if you wants to set that crucial vote up for friday. so our question for senators has been are they ready to let him move forward? are they going to say, okay, you can go ahead? so the president instead of diffusing the situation is instead taking the temperature up, which could make that more difficult. here's susan collins

. >> and kasie hunt, before you go, and i know that you have a ton of things to do, and mitch mcconnell can's vote that therea motion to proceed and just the first floor and not the final confirmation vote? >> right. sop yrp, the -- so andrea, ther senate procedures here that are challengi challenging, so i will try to walk the viewers through and i know that you are familiar. but initially, and it is kind of setting up to be the critical vote on kavanaugh is what is known as the cloture vote which is used to be the one that took 60 vote, but now because of the change of the rules pushed through by the democrats and the circuit judges and now by republican republicans on the supreme court nominees that is the vote set up friday. if the democrats demanded to follow the rules to the letter, it another 30 hours or day and a half and change to have a final vote on kavanaugh, and so we are waiting for the timing to play out. we anticipate it could go into the weekend and potentially agree to make changes if everyone is on board for it, but we are settling in for a long week here on the hill.
