, kasie, it's expected he'll get kwirconfirme easily. what are you watching for today? >> reporter: we're keeping an eye on this one. as you point out, it is in fact expected to be a relatively easy pass for barr to get confirmed. i think the question on everyone's minds here on capitol hill is what does that mean in the context of all these big questions that we've been talking about today, and frankly for months, about the mueller investigation. we know from pete williams' reporting that rod rosenstein is intending to depart the justice department after barr is officially named attorney general. so that could have timing implications for the mueller report. of course everyone here in congress gearing up for when that happens. democrats preparing to jump on information there, republicans preparing their defenses, et cetera. we know that the house committees are staffing up to try and deal with whatever may come out of all of that. so i would look at this as a potential start line for all of these events really beginning to unfold after

kasie hunt is holding it down on the hill. it seems inexplicable we're here again talking about the potential for a second shutdown this year. what are lawmakers going to do about it? we've just learned the top four negotiators here on capitol hill are going to meet this afternoon. we think around 3:30 or so so discuss how to restart these talks. because the reality is as of yesterday morning, they had stalled completely as you were just talking about. it is over this seemingly new issue of detention beds. i think we should point out this has always been a simmering piece of the negotiation all the way along. immigration advocates in particular backed up by democrats have been concerned very deeply about how the trump administration is enforcing immigration law in the interior of the country, and they almost view this as a more important policy piece even than the wall which is, of course, become something of a symbol of this president and everything that he stands for. but there is some risk for the democrats in bringing this

kasie hunt oh on capitol hill. fill me in, and jeff, let me start with you. when i spoke with a white house official this morning, they said we're looking for details, essentially. noncommittal from the white house side. at least at this point. any changes? >> hallie, you're hearing what i'm hearing. the latest from the white house source on this end is that the president is still making up his mind. he's not yet decided whether or not this congressional compromise is acceptable to him. so there are a couple of face-saving exit ramps available to the president should he choose to take one of them. the first is the easiest way out. you just play semantics. say the border barrier funded in this proposed deal constitutes his wall. he signs the thing. crisis averted. the other option that white house officials are weighing is this. the president accepts this agreement. he trashes it. but he also adds to it an executive action that would allow him to redirect unspent federal dollars and government reprogramming. he'd reprogram defense department money to build the

kasie raised a good point. when you get outside iowa and new hampshire, he's got to improve what he was able to do with african-american voters in 2016. but that large field could cut in his favor. >> benefits of being the next door neighbor to new hampshire. kasie, you were up there to visit with kamala harris. it's obviously sort of through this lens of bernie sanders as the democratic socialist that you were pressing her on some of her positions. here's part of your exchange. >> i support capitalism. it, in theory, is something that requires competition, that will allow us to be better and evolve, but there are assumptions also that are wrong, that it applies equally to all people. that's just not the case in america today. i also say we have to correct course. >> it speaks, i think, to the back of bernie sanders that it's a headline that a democratic candidate for president says i support capitalism. yet, as a result of bernie sanders, that is a real lane divider among these democrats. >> you're seeing it b

jill, i want to start with you and where kasie left off. one of the big statements we heard yesterday from michael cohen was there was this meeting inside the oval office in which the president's attorneys basically signed off on amended some of the comments he was going to give when he lied before congress 18 months ago about those trump tower negotiations. now i want to make it very clear in some follow-up questions he then said he's not sure who specifically amended his statements. but what did you make of what we heard on that point? could that expose the president to legal issues? >> he was very careful in his testimony which is, of course, i think what partly made him credible yesterday. he did not stretch the truth. he really stuck to the facts that he knew as much as he could. so he was careful to say it was changed. he couldn't say without looking at the documents specifically, precisely what the changes were and who made them. so unless he had a specific way of proving that it was the president who changed it and that the lawyers

kasie, you're on the campaign trail bundled up. you knew bernie sanders round one in 2016. here we are now round two. how does this announcement -- what does this announcement mean for the race? you're also on the trail with kamala harris. >> reporter: that's right, hallie. yes, it is freezing here in new hampshire as per usual. but it's also great to be back. kamala harris doing the storied politics and eggs breakfast. bernie sanders jumping in to this race. there were some questions about whether or not he was going to do it. there were reports of him having meals with elizabeth warren as they both talked about what their plans were going to be. and i think the question is does he have that same energy this time around that he showed in 2016, or is that energy now spread out among too many other potential choices for democratic voters? i think when you talk to people who are working on some of these other campaigns, they're looking at bernie sanders and elizabeth warren and saying the two of them are going to cannibalize each other, essentially. they're both trying to app

kasie hunt is on the hill for us this morning.alk us through what's going to happen today in the house. and is there a fourth republican who is lined up to defect? >> reporter: there's a couple people that we're watching. i will start with what we're going to see here in the house. that's going to play out first. nancy pelosi is going to put this resolution on the floor. we'll see procedural votes. we expect it to pass in the house, obviously. what we're looking for is the number of republican defections. republican leaders have been pushing their members to stick with the president on this. saying he has the legal authority. that is, of course, at odds with what a lot of republican senators have been saying for the last few months as this crisis has unfolded. so we are watching to see if there is that fourth senator. there are still a couple people, or at least one i can identify that's cory gardner of colorado who is facing a tough reelection who still has not told us which way to our knowledge he's going to vote on this resolut
