i'm kasie hunt in for chuck todd. we've been listening to president joe biden make his first remarks about last night's deadly mass shooting at a boulder, colorado supermark. we first want to bring you the latest on the shooting and investigation. police in colorado released the names of the ten victims in last night's shootings. they range in age from 20 to 65 and they include boulder police officer eric talley, a father of seven, who was the first officer on the scene as the shooting unfolded. president biden remarked on officer talley's heroism and offered his sympathy to the family at the white house moments ago. police have also named a suspect who's been charged with ten counts of first degree murder and will soon be transferred to the boulder county jail. the district attorney and boulder police chief were alongside police officers as they gave the update today. >> i wish i could say here and promise that the pain will heal quickly. it won't. but for the family and friends and our community, the loss endures. >

kasie hunt, what do you make of manchin's position. are you at all surprised by it?lly, because if you think about west virginia, which is, of course, the state that he represents, lots of federal money for infrastructure helps him at home. it's going to be something that's likely welcomed by the governor of the state, a republican. it's not a place where higher taxes on corporations or people making high amounts of money is necessarily going to be something that really hits home. i honestly think that there are some democrats who represent places like the state of maryland or the state of new york, where cost of living can be very high, where you might see more concerns about the suggestions to raise personal taxes. but infrastructure, you know, it historically has been such a bipartisan issue. and i don't mean that in that people have been able to easily agree, but rather, it is easier to get people to vote "yes" on something when they have something in the bill that helps them at home. so you could compile something that would get enough votes that it would be rep

let's bring in nbc capitol hill correspondent and host of "way too early", kasie hunt.ef white house correspondent for the "new york times", peter baker. peter, quick question we were talking about last hour, obviously this is a landmark piece of legislation that just passed. it is one of the most dramatic pieces of poverty legislation we have seen in decades. what is the reaction from the white house? what is the reaction from the hill? how big of a piece of legislation is this? >> well, i think it is a big piece of legislation. it is three pieces of legislation rolled into one. there is the obvious covid relief aspect, which is how it has been presented and advertised. that's only a piece of it. the other two pieces of course massive economic stimulus. another $1.9 trillion pumped into the economy. some economists worry whether that would be too much. the third part is what you talk about. a big policy bill, anti-poverty bill. joe biden's version of the great society. not creating new programs but bolstering an attack on child poverty in particular through child tax c

kasie hunt joins us with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. those two men are behind bars pending additional hearings. they've not been charged with the death of officer sicknick and the investigation remains ongoing, but federal authorities are revealing chilling details about their alleged assault on sicknick and two other officers during that deadly mob attack. this morning, two men now facing federal charges for assaulting police officers with an unknown chemical substance during the violent siege on the capitol on january 6th, when a mob attacked officers. one of those officers, brian sicknick, died the next day. later, lying in honor in the same building he served to protect for 13 years. the defendants, julian khater and george tanios facing nine charges for assaulting sicknick and two other officers. neither have been charged with sicknick's death, the cause still under investigation. the fbi piecing together the defendant's actions using digital evidence, including surveillance videos and an officer's body camera. authorities say one

i'm kasie hunt in for chuck todd. the emergency situation at the border is escalating.is the biden administration effort to address it. president biden has told reporters he intends to make a trip to the border at some point soon. hhs is standing up additional facilities to address the surge. securing hotel rooms to houz house some families. some border acts in the rio grande valley have been authorized to release migrants without court dates. the press hasn't been given access to see the conditions inside the facilities. today, a texas congressman released five pictures he says were taken in a facility. according to his aide, each of the eight pods in the facility has a 260 person capacity. as of sunday, one pod held more than 400 unaccompanied male minors. most of the obscuring of the faces that you can see existed on the photos that nbc news received. officials at dhs did not immediately comment. a dhs official didn't dispute their authenticity. the biden administration is trying to navigate both the border emergency and the politics that surround it as the white hou
