the other person who's back in the picture is kasowitz, marc kasowitz, his longtime new york lawyer, who had been fired last summer when dowd came in. trump at the time going with sort of a more established washington white collar lawyer. now kasowitz coming in, the sort of scrappy new york lawyer who represented the president in different litigation. kasowitz back last summer wants to have a more adversarial tone towards mueller, was pushing the president in that direction. dowd came in, went with something more conciliatory. and i think the president thinks that lighter, nicer tone with mueller didn't get him very far. >> phil rucker, i've been glued to your twitter feed all night. you've been tweeting about another lawyer perhaps in the model of a kasowitz, alan dershowi dershowitz. i believe you spoke to him after his dinner with the president tonight. tell us about it. >> so alan dershowitz, the retired harvard law school professor, who's a frequent commentator on fox news, offering legal advice through the television to the president, who is watching, he had dinner at the white

mark kasowitz is back in the news. he was the personal lawyer at the time some of these transgressions might have occurred. i think steve bannon says in "fire and fury" kasowitz got him out of all kinds of trouble. do you have any reporting that suggests he's back in the inner circle helping the president deal with this crisis? >> he's back, but he never left. last summer kasowitz was fired as trump's lead lawyer on the russia -- mueller investigation. he went with washington lawyers john dowd taking a more conciliatory approach to the special counsel. but the thing, like everyone in trump world, you're never really gone and kasowitz continued to remain in the picture. he continued to represent the president in the civil matters that he has and has had an increasingly larger role in the recent months as other lawyers have fallen out. and now he is working with jay sekulow, the president's washington lawyer down here, and they are -- you know, he's back in helping the president deal with the special counsel's investigat

marc kasowitz was fired after a public meltdown but now someone from his firm was back at the white house premises today. that news comes as "the new york times" reports this evening that the president told top staffers in december, december 2017, that he wanted to fire robert mueller. this new report from "the times" is the second time it has been reported that the president attempted to fire robert mueller as special counsel. once apparently last summer, that was reportedly thwarted by white house counsel don mcgahn, and now this new report from "the times" suggests that once again in december the president attempted to have robert mueller fired, although he did not end up going through with it. we'll have more on that breaking news story ahead. all this happening today as one of the world's richest men testified in congress sitting on a booster seat. literally sitting on a booster seat. today his company, facebook, admitted that when tens of millions of americans had all their private data stolen off of facebook by the data firm used by the trump campaign, that stolen data even include
