i'm kate bolduan. thank you for joining me. here is what we know this morning in the escalating crisis between the united states and iran. a staggering scene is playing out in iran right now. tens of thousands of people are marching through the streets, mourning the death of qasem soleimani, and also chanting death to america. this as iran announces it will completely abandon any of the limits agreed to in the iran nuclear deal and are also threatening revenge. here in the united states, president trump is doubling down, and once again going against his top advisers, going against what they say hours before saying if iran hits back, he could authorize strikes on even iran's historic cultural sites, which is considered a war crime. here's the president, his statement yesterday. they're allowed to kill our people, they're allowed to torture and maim our people, they're allowed to use roadside bombs and blow up our people, he wri writes, and we're not allowed to touch their cultural sites. it doesn't work that way. that from the p

"at this hour" with kate bolduan starts right now. >>> hello, everyone. i'm kate bolduan. thank you for joining me. we have breaking news in the presidential election that we'll begin with today. new jersey senator cory booker officially announcing just now that he is ending his bid for the white house. the announcement coming in just moments ago. cnn's rebecca buck is following all this, she joins me now. what is booker saying? >> reporter: well, kate, he's telling his supporters that he felt he did not have the resources to continue in this race for president, with just a few weeks to go until the iowa caucuses. of course, booker was not going to be on the debate stage tomorrow night for cnn's debate in iowa with the des moines regist register. he was one of the vocal critics of the threshold that prevented candidates of color from making that debate stage. tomorrow night will be first time we will see all white candidates on that stage. but i want to focus on booker's decision for now and read you from an email he sent out to supporters, going out right now. he says it

>> yeah, you're right, kate. we wondered maybe, this being the last big stage that these candidates would be on before the iowa caucus that they would take the opportunity to draw distinctions. it just didn't happen. i have to imagine that's in part because of the way the iowa caucus structure is set up. not only do you need to bring in voters to your side of the aisle and make them your first choice, but you also need to be the second choice as well. that weighs heavily in this process. there may be ways to claim victory here in iowa without necessarily getting the most votes. so you could tell the way that these candidates handled themselves last night, they clearly wanted to make the point that i am the best candidate in the race but they didn't want to say they didn't like another candidate. because if you're someone who supports elizabeth warren, you've got to pick other people down the ballot and you don't want to alienate those potential supporters because that could end up having a big impact as to who wi
