kate bolduan, stand by. it's going to be a long night for all of us and the folks working there in washington. our brianna keilar is on duty for us tonight, as well. republican leaders say they are in contact with the white house. what can you tell us about that? >> well, what we do know is very vague, don, i have to tell you that. the white house at this late hour isn't silent. i can tell you that, but it's sort of unclear exactly what this means. we know back and forth is going on between the white house and capitol hill. while we heard harry reid being kind of pessimistic on the outcome perhaps of some sort of deal here imminently, we've also heard from the senate minority leaderer mitch mcconnell some more optimism. the word from the white house is they have been very, very silent today. but again these discussions continuing to go on. and we're certainly waiting just because we know that there are these discussions to see if perhaps something could happen tonight, don. we know that it could be possible,

let's go to kate bolduan.esident spoke to the american people and reporters to give his take. the speaker coming back. the question now is, what will he work on? the last question i thought was a pretty good one. the grand bargain seems dead. a smaller deal -- the house -- the house-passed plan today died in the senate. what's option three? >> reporter: option three is an excellent question, i'll tell you. i will tell you, we are receiving some pushback on the timing of the calls, when the president was informed and when reporters were informed. but besides that, john, the big question now that we should all focus on is exactly that, where are they going now. and we're told from sources it's unclear. they know now that they need to work quickly and be serious and they need to find a compromise. republican sources that we spoke to said that they there's still an understanding that they need to unveil some principal, some compromise monday in order to allow time to get it through the house and get it through som

i want to go to kate bolduan. you have been working your sources and getting information. you heard harry reid there right after i spoke with you earlier. what have you learned. >> for viewers, we can note that at this late stage in the game anytime one of these key players talks, we listen very carefully to their words. i'll say at this point, especially as we heard some pessimism in the voice of harry reid earlier today, this does appear to be a positive step. i don't want to go as far as to say you know, very, very significant. but this is a positive note from what he announced a few moments ago. we do have the sound bite and why don't we listen to that one more time, don. >> i've spoken to the white house. quite a few times this evening. they've asked to give everyone as much time as possible to reach an agreement if one can be reached. for that reason, we'd holdover the vote till tomorrow at noon. >> he also said i think right after that, don, we should give everyone as much room as possible to do something along the lines to do the work that they need to do. so clear

cnn congressional correspondent kate bolduan is live on capitol hill. kate, boehner has been holding negotiations with lawmakers after walking away from talks with the president on friday over tax hikes. what can we expect to come out of this conference call? >> reporter: well, it seems at the very least speaker boehner and other house republican leaders are looking to update their republican members in the house on the status of negotiations. we know that talks are continuing today. we also know that yesterday speaker boehner, when he held a conference call yesterday with house members, he said -- he told members that he was pushing for a debt ceiling increase in two steps that would come -- that would equal some $3 trillion to $4 trillion in cuts. and that -- excuse me. and that two-step process seems to be key right now as both the administration as well as republican as well as democratic leaders have said they are opposed to any sort-term extension. if that means, fredricka, and this is key, if it means that the country would end up in a similar deb

let's bring in congressional correspondent kate bolduan.more can you tell us about the conference calls taking place today? >> reporter: so the meeting was this morning, about 50 minutes, and the readouts we heard from the meeting at the white house this morning was that it was really a discussion of the urgency to find a path forward. i will tell you now that speaker -- house speaker john boehner held a conference call a little while ago with many of his house republican members and on that conference call, speaker boehner laid out what he says is the package that they're working towards at this very minute. a package, according to an aide familiar with this call, speaker boehner said he's working to put together a package of $3 trillion to $4 trillion in cuts and this would happen in two steps if you will. this coordinates with what my colleague brianna keilar is hearing from her sources that she heard they were laying out many scenarios, working on many scenarios, but most of them would involve voting on the debt ceiling twice. i'll tell

first kate bolduan is on capitol hill with the latest. do you know? >> reporter: that revised plan came out this evening with new cost estimates which is the gold standard every bill has to face in order to make it to the floor. that revised plan is welcome news if you will for house speaker john boehner thanks to a kind of technical fix they were able to find more savings. that's important for house speaker john boehner. now according to these new cost estimates, it offers $917 billion in deficit reduction. while that still falls quite short of his original target of 1.2 trillion, it works. and here's why. because it meets the test that he set out from the beginning was that the cuts be more than the amount they raised the debt ceiling, which is $900 billion for his bill. so this is very welcome news. they're putting this out there. they're moving forward with this vote. they've been trying to wrangle the votes and secure all the support they can from their own party in these last few days but the vote could still be close. >> there's a l

jessica yellin and cory borger and kate bolduan join us. about to have this vote, i assume the majority knows it has the votes to pass this plan. if the senate passes it, the president said he would veto it. is this is a stepping stone or an act of defiance for the house republicans say, no, president pl president, this is the best we'll give you? >> you can look at it from both perspectives to be honest. part of the discussion as we're leading into the vote, where people -- everyone knew it wasn't going to go anywhere in the senate, many have made the point that maybe allowing this vote and allowing house republicans to have their say and make their stand for deeper cuts and stricter controls, maybe it will clear the air. create some room if you will for maybe compromise as the clock ticks down and asks for this vote. at the same time, we are hearing from house conservatives continuously, they don't want to compromise, even after this point, so it's -- it's unclear exactly where we'll go from here. >> and it's an important point kate makes

cnn congressional correspondent kate bolduan joins us from capitol hill.t that. and that's big news. you can be sure, jessica, that what the house speaker does not want to be doing right now is having to rewrite his bill. they were aiming to be voting on this bill tomorrow, so right now we're told that they're kind of scra scrambling to work it out and rewrite it, and he wants to meet the pledges that the cuts in the bill will be larger than the debt ceiling increased. and the cost estimates that came out by the cbo, it falls short, and that's a problem because it goes counter to the pledge i just said and it's also a problem because they're in the middle of working very hard to try to sell this plan. house conservatives are unhappy and house democrats are trying to get a united front to vote against this plan, and that does not leave the speaker a large margin of error to pass this legislation. jessica? >> all right, thanks so much, kate bolduan reporting for us from capitol hill. i'm grateful. >>> let's turn now to republican congressmen scott garrett fr

congressional correspondent kate bolduan here to explain if she can what's going on tonight. kate, can you? what is going on? >> reporter: it's been a wild day up here, i'll tell you, piers. it all started when the house republican leaders, they abruptly stopped debate on this bill that they thought they were going to have enough support for because they didn't have enough support. and then hours of behind closed doors, arm twisting and trying to round up the votes around this bill as they continued throughout the evening to say that they still intended to have a vote and then abruptly just a little over an hour ago, i would say, republican leaders came out and they said they were not going to have a vote and that they'd be continuing their negotiations and they'd come back in tomorrow morning. so what really we're now learning has been happening behind the scenes at least in part. we've learned from a house republican source. is that they're trying to win over some of the undecides of some of the no votes amongst the conservatives in their party. what they were discussing at

kate bolduan is on capitol hill. kate, this is very interesting because both mish mcconnell and john boehner saying it really is up to the president to get us back on track with this. even though it's both houses of congress who have yet to agree on one solid plan. what's going on here? >> i'm having a little bit feedback, i'm sorry, i'm going to pull this out of my ear. but an interesting point that we heard just now from the republican leader of the senate mitch mcconnell, in the past hour, he said, that he has spoken with the vice president and the president and saying now they're fully engaged in negotiations. that's more of an affirmative statement that these discussions are underway that we have heard throughout the day. and that's what reporters have been asking, is when is the negotiation going to be start? we have seen on capitol hill the following, we have now seen house speaker john boehner's bill rejected by the senate, that was yesterday. then we have senate majority leader harry reid's bill, that was jus

jessica yellin standing by live and our congressional correspondent kate bolduan on capitol hill as wellte, i'll start with pup do we know where things stand at the capitol now? >> reporter: in short i can tell you, don no deal up here on capitol hill, as this evening it seems republican and democratic negotiators, congressional leaders, seem to be moving in different directions rather than towards a bipartisan agreement. house speaker john boehner on a conference calm with houl with republicans seemed to given a pep talk. saying stick together and stick to the principles at the same time he said they also need to come to agree together on a measure that can also pass both the house and the senate, and then at the very same time, the senate majority leader, democrat harry reid is pushing his own proposal and according to a democratic aide it's because of an impasse over this two-part process. this two-step process speaker bane hare been proposing as a way to raise the debt ceiling for this proposal that reid is pushing, it could also come with a debt reduction of $2.5 t trillion and rais

and kate bolduan is on capitol hill. let's begin with you, kate. what's going on on capitol hill where apparently a lot of the staff members are meeting. >> reporter: at this moment, they're meeting in the white house, congressional leaders and the president. as far as we know, the meeting is still ongoing. started just after 11:00 eastern time, of course. here on capitol hill, we're told that ever since this announcement really happened yesterday evening, staffs have been really communicating and talking and trying to figure out a path forward. we've been told they'll be working throughout the weekend to try to find this compromise, this way to thread the needle, if you will, to find a way to beat this deadline and reach an agreement that can pass both the house and the senate. while staffs will be working, our producer learned that speaker boehner and other house leadership will be holding a conference call with all house members to explain really where they stand and the status of negotiations. so that will also be happening today. but as far as

our correspondent, our congressional correspondent kate bolduan has been tracking the events for us all day in d.c. and joins me now. kate, where do we stand right now. >> reporter: bottom line, don, after a long weekend of work and of meetings and a lot of negotiating there is no deal between congressional leaders and the white house. republicans and democrats that have been negotiating this, the congressional leaders, they really seem to be moving in different directions rather than toward a bipartisan agreement. late this evening, i heard from a top democratic official that the stalemate as this person put it was over this proposal, part of the proposal that speaker boehner has been pushing and you and i have talked about, don, that would raise the debt ceiling in a two-part process. the democratic official saying the short-term extension in their view would not provide the certainty that the markets are looking for in terms of the debt ceiling and harry reid, the top democrat in the senate, he released a statement late this evening saying just as much. he said in part "speaker boehn

cnn congressional correspondent, kate bolduan joins us from washington.sly different sides here. >> they are and they have been all along. it's in this issue of taxes and tax increases, in terms of new revenue is not a new issue, but did have their sights set on this so-called grand deal. it was somewhere in the area of deficit savings in $4 trillion, it was going to likely come with a very hefty $1 trillion in new revenue. a very tall order as it was going to call for new revenue, in terms of tax increases, as well as significant changes to medicare and social security. very important issue to democrats and republicans. and what we're seeing now, susan, is basically that the talks over this grand deal have effectively broken down. speaker boehner saying that the issue is over tax increases. but the white house pushing back, that the deal, pushing back that the deal broke down because the white house wanted tax increases. they're pushing back saying that's not the case. what we know is that speaker boehner and the president did speak by phone yesterday. w

there's a lot happening and we're covering every angle for you, our kate bolduan is standing by at the capitol if the out of the way conferences are buzzing right now. brianna keeler is on duty at the white house. good evening to you, brianna, what can you tell us about this meeting between the president and his top party leaders in congress? >> reporter: as far as we know, the president is meeting right now with senate majority leader harry reid and with leader pelosi from the house, the leader of the minority in the house. and we don't have details on this yet, it's a closed press meeting, meaning we didn't even get our pool cameras inside to get a glimpse of this, but we know from a white house official that they are meeting here at the white house and we're hoping to get at least a notification when that all wraps up. white house officials saying this is to update the president on around these debt negotiations and what we're really seeing, and this is part of it is a flurry of negotiations going on and this all kind of follows some cab book i can theater playing out on the bill. w

. >>> to capitol hill now and cnn congressional correspondent kate bolduan. what more can you tell us about speaker boehner having these discussions with republicans and republicans only? >> reporter: well, yeah. he is skethd to cheduled to be conference call with other house republican leadership and four house republican members really to lay out kind of where things stand at this point. this all follows this letter that speaker boehner sent out to republican members last night, late last night that we received saying basically -- kind of laying out why he had decided to pull out of the talks with president obama. but now this afternoon we're hearing from some sources just kind boyfriend what happof abou that meeting. they discussed the urgency of finding a way -- urgency to find a path forward and we also received a statement from the republican leader in the senate, mitch mcconnell. he released this statement. i'll read it to you. the president, he says, wanted to know there was a plan for preventing national default. the bipartisan leadership and congres

let's check in with our congressional correspondent, kate bolduan, there on capitol hill. clearly he's frustrated, but at the same time, he says there has been some cooperation from the white house to try to be involved with members of capitol hill and he's trying to kind of correct what senator mitch mcconnell said earlier that the president is distancing himself from coming up with a solid plan. >> right. at the same time, of course, in -- at this point in the game there is quite a heightnd rhetoric on both sides. we also heard from republicaned that they have not had much communication from the white house. that, of course, is their position. they think at this point that the negotiations need to happen first here on capitol hill and then bring in the white house. but we are hearing today, especially, from the republican leader in the house, mitch mcconnell. he says any deal at this point that is going to be struck has to involve the president, or some member of the white house in order to get this across the finish line because we're so close to the deadline at this po

jessica yellin, kate bolduan, gloria borger and ali velshi. me kind of back room meeting going on? >> reporter: it seems they have call it a night at least for this evening. the house is back in at noon tomorrow and the senate's back in around the same time. but other than the very symbolic vote that you've been talking about, anderson, where the house is going to take up harry reid's bill and block it to prove it can't pass in the house, other than that action on the floor, the action's not going to be on the house or the senate floor. it's going to be in these back room behind the scenes conversations between leaders if there is going to be a compromise reached it's going to be between them. but as we've been talking about, that hasn't started yet. >> and jessica, at the white house any word tonight on what happens next from their perspective? i mean, how involved are they going to be over this weekend? >> reporter: there are no plans, anderson, yet for any kind of a meeting. but i believe that if they decide it's necessary the president will

kate bolduan is our congressional correspondent. ou will, of some of the drama as it unfolded on the floor of the house. >> from my colleagues in the house chamber coming in and out and we'll see some members walking past us as they are leaving the chamber. my colleague tells me that members were watching with high interest the vote board that's kind of above on the wall and it kind of keeps the tally of where the votes stand and you can see as things tick off and change and that a hush came over the crowd, if you will. it came over the chamber when they passed that threshold of 216. as we know, that held and it passed and they were able to squeak it by with 218 votes is where it fell. high interest in the vote as you can see. many people walking out now and of course the question lends to what's next and all eyes are now turning on the other side of the capitol behind me to the senate. >> you'll be over there pretty soon. stand by. i want to go to the democratic senator from ohio joining us live right now. senator, what's going to h

. >> let's bring in kate bolduan. we don't know what they'll agree to, but we're hearing a lot about what they won't agree to. >> reporter: that's absolutely right. president obama said he's looking forward to knowing everybody's bottom lines as they go into this next meeting. -- perhaps especially among his own democrats. as congressional leaders try to broker a debt deal at the white house, reaction on capitol hill shows just how tough it will be to get a 3 to $4 trillion agreement through congress. nancy pelosi said any cuts to entitlement benefits are a no-go. >> i also want full clarity about where how democrats stand. we do not support cuts in benefits for social security and medicare. >> while he does leave the doors up, rank and file democrats were unyielding. >> now we are hearing that the most vulnerable will have to be the brunt potentially of a deal, and i join with my colleagues in the progressive caucus to say that medicare, medicaid and social security are off the table. >>ed top democrat in the senate,

let's bring in kate bolduan. >> reporter: in terms of the backup plan, seems to be the only plan at thisdes seem to at least be open to it in terms of it being a backup. for democrats, this is the up side, they would get to see the debt ceiling raised, which they have been calling for, and democrats would be able to avoid very deep, deep spending cuts that republicans say they would be required as part of a big debt deal if they would reach that. it would also avoid for democrats any real changes or cuts to medicare and other entitlement programs which they have been fighting against during this debate. at the same time, i will say the flip side, maybe the downside for democrats is they would not get the new revenue, that the tax increases that they have been calling for in terms of shared sacrifice and the balanced approach that we heard democrats talking so much about during the debate, and if we get to the point where we're at the last ditch effort, democrats would be able to work with the downside while they get the other up side. >> it seems for both sides, this plan f. it's adopted

our correspondent kate bolduan is standing by.n reporting, according to democratic sources, a statement put out by the democratic whip, that members have been advised that the house republican leadership has postponed -- postponed this critical vote on extending and raising the debt ceiling. what are you hearing on the hill? what's going on? >> here's what we're hearing. it does appear they are delaying the vote, but we do not know yet how long they are delaying the vote. several republican aides assure us they will still be voting on boehner's bill this evening. what we do know is the original schedule included after this general debate, after that wrapped up, they would be moving to vote on this bill. well, they have stopped that debate and began to debate a separate, unrelated bill. what that is an indication of, wolf, they appear to be having problems, that they were still working to rally the votes and get people on board to support this piece of legislation. we've been outside the speaker's office, seeing members going in an

kate bolduan is on the hill. kate, what exactly is in the plan proposed by the group of six?big plan. some were describing it as a huge long-term deficit reduction plan that includes some 3.6, $3.7 trillion in deficit reduction over the next ten years. $500 billion in deficit savings in the immediate term, if you will. it also is calling for new revenue, which some will read as tax increases, a touchy point there. another touchy point it takes on is entitlement reform. there is a lot in this plan. but this, the goal of this plan was really to make the president's fiscal commission, they came up with guidelines and suggestions to make that a reality. and this has been worked on for months by this bipartisan group of senators, three democrats, three republicans and they've come up with this massive plan. to be clear, their focus has always been on long-term deficit reduction not necessarily unless relation to this is specifically this debt ceiling debate as they've been looking at this far before this debate really heated up. >> brianna, what's the white house doing to make the

deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling, but there are signs of movement just the last few hours, kate bolduans standing by, kate, i understand that speaker john boehner held a conference call just a short time ago with house republicans. >> i just want to give you a little update, there seems to be a lot of fluid parts that we're tracking this afternoon. we have been told, my completion dierdre walsh and ted barren say that all the congressional leaders that are involved in these negotiations, they're sitting down? just about a half an hour for a meeting and we'll be in there, we're at least told we'll get a photo-op of that. we'll see if they're going to be taking any questions, we'll see the democratic leaders harry reid and mish mcconnell and john boehner sitting down together. but to that point that you were talking about, that conference call that house speaker john boehner called with his members, this happened after the meeting a the white house, and we're told according to an aid familiar with this call, john boehner told house republican members that she was working toward a package,

congressional correspondent kate bolduan joins us now from washington. more are you learning, kate? >> reporter: when you think about it, it's a dramatic breakdown that we saw on the negotiations just last night. then you have this meeting between the two men who seem visibly angry towards each other in their dualing press conferences last night, house speaker boehner and president obama, were back in the room with democratic and republican leaders this morning. coming out of this meeting, some interesting information we're getting. in the meeting we're told that there was an urgent discussion that was being held, so that -- avoid default. we're now learning that speaker boehner held a press conference at 2:00 with house members, moraning and file members, and according to an aid familiar with that call. speaker boehner said he and other leaders are trying to, working towards a package of trillion dollar spending cuts, basically two votes if you will on the debt ceiling and that he's working towards that, but it's not clear if there is -- if the democrat

kate bolduan is over on the hill. so does that signal just how urgent this has become? >> reporter: yes it does. they've been signaling that urgency now for quite sometime but as secretary geithner said yesterday on state of the union here on cnn, they're almost running out of runway. of course, you and i know what happens when a plane gets to the end of the runway and doesn't lift off. that's why the president called this bipartisan group of congressional leaders to the white house on saturday, to try to figure out what they have, what options they have to raise the debt ceiling and then democrats back to the white house yesterday, the president met with them. the bottom line on the side of democrats and the president in particular is that whatever deal is put on the table has to extend the debt ceiling through the end of 2012. why? because this white house believes that if it's difficult to get something done now it will be much more difficult to get it done later. it's sort of in the midst of the election cycle. in

congressional correspondent kate bolduan is with us now. kate, what do you have?me interesting developments to tell our viewers about. we're getting a readout of the conference call that john boehner held with his members, and really what i think the big headline here is there is not a deal at this hour between congressional leaders who have been said to have been working toward some type of agreement. now, speaker boehner on this call, according to a source familiar, really seemed to have some tough talks for his members, saying that they need to stick together and to stick to their principles. at the same time we have on the other side of the capitol, the senate majority leader, the democrat over there, senator harry reid. he's pushing his own proposal. speaker boehner on this call while saying they need to stick to their principles seems to be laying the ground work, that they're going to really need to compromise, that they're going to have to find something that they can agree to that they can also pass, the house and the senate and honestly be agreed to by t

our congressal correspondent kate bolduan is following this. what do we know? >> reporter: it's changing minute by minute. we did see what could be a significant step in the negotiations just a short time ago when the top republican in the senate, he said, who is a key negotiator in whatever the end game s-he said that those stalled debt talks that were happening that have been stalled all this past week he acknowledged they are talking once again. list engineer here. actually, i don't think we have the sound. that was mitch mcconnell who said he had spoken with the president as well as the vice president and that he says they are fully engaged in serious negotiations. that is a big statement. i'll tell you almost as quickly as we heard that come from the top republican in the senate we also heard from senate majority leader harry reid as he was returning to the capitol from a meeting at the white house with the president. he was asked if they were any closer to an agreement and reid said very firmly no. one reason could be is we're hearing from democratic lead
