up political correspondent kate brady welcome kate let's start with the trial itself what do you make of the verdict in the sentence well it certainly was shorter than what the prosecution were asking for they were asking for 11 years but this also isn't a surprise even i mean that said it wasn't always a foregone conclusion that. gentleman would actually be found guilty of course there have been a lot of dispute from day one of this court case gaps in evidence and also whether that might be even possibilities of bias among some of the lay judges the defense for example wanted to know if any of the late judges that's basically the german equivalent of a jury they wanted to know if any of the late judges had for example attended any of those far right extremist demonstrations or even some of the counter demonstrations and also most of the prosecution was actually largely based on evidence by one employee of a combat shop who witnessed the killing of danny late last year and so there was a lot of public interest in this case as well which is also one of the reasons why it was also held

and you talked more about this story i'm joined by a political correspondent kate brady who's been following the story for us this stuff the tron it's kate now what do you make of the verdict and the conclusion seems like it was not a foregone conclusion a tall order certainly it wasn't ever always a foregone conclusion from day one of this trial which started back in march there were a lot of disputes over potential gaps in the evidence most of the prosecution was actually largely based on evidence by employee and they have by combat shop who reportedly witnessed this attack back in august last year and even right up until the verdict today the defense was calling for this case to be thrown out to these gaps and doubts even over the. over the. making sure as well that also some of the lay judges for example that they were biased in any of their decision making whether they had perhaps taken part in any of the far right demonstrations that happened as a result of this attack or on the other hand that they took part in some of those counter-demonstrations as well and this was a very high secu

my colleague kate brady spoke to him about the situation in hong kong. thank you for joining us the unrest in hong kong has certainly reached new levels in recent days and we now have one chinese government official warning protesters that they shouldn't underestimate china's immense strength is that beijing warning that it may step in to deal with the protests directly i think of the. government because you know. they can crash them any time any moment under the. same tome when they're dealing with a new body given the boys are there for use in hong kong which is a much complex situation and i think they're just bluffing now but in deeply in their mind they would do it if they need to but do you think that the protesters in hong kong can continue to support the movement without any dialogue with the hong kong government and what are the options on the table right now for the hong kong government to i think of the. hong kong government is there really part of the central government there listen to the central government i don't really want to have a new

our political correspondent kate brady is looking into this story for us she's with us here in our studio hi kate this is shaping up to be a pretty tight race between chance i'm going to marco's conservative the c.d.u. in saxony and the far right what is at stake here for the chancellor but there's a lot at stake here for of course her conservatives have been hemorrhaging voters largely to the far right after the in recent months particularly since i was 2017 national elections we've had several state elections since in every corner of germany and also the european parliamentary elections just earlier this year and in every one of those elections her party as well as her junior coalition party the social democrats have taken quite a bating losing votes largely to the far right afterward but also to the green party as well who are expected to make some small but significant gains. in these upcoming elections in saxony to where we just saw there in that report but what's interesting about saxony is well this is really a mirror image of the government in berlin right now of course the coalit
