kate brady kate it's great having ensued you did this come as a shock for these traditional massive it really wasn't quite as much of a surprise as you might first think of course we've had a lot of opinion polls ahead of these elections and this really reflects what is an ongoing trend across germany and also in neighboring e.u. countries european countries at the moment and that is the erosion of mainstream parties and we're seeing both on a federal level and down in bavaria tonight that the support for the traditional main parties or the conservatives in the social democrats is really nose diving and instead we're seeing this fragmentation of germany's political landscape and we've seen people moving to what really are in the biggest and the fringes of germany's political spectrum so people many voters left the conservative c.s.u. who of course are also the very insistent party to merkel's conservatives many of them went to the to the right to the right to the far right but also the greens won a lot of votes off the back of the mistakes that were made by the s.p.d. as social democrats and the c.s.u. the conservatives were talking about the very this is one of the wealthiest states here in germany indeed in europe as well. but people these still seem unsatisfied with their government's work why is that well these are really interesting point actually that this isn't really connected to the economy it's all which of course often drives votes is and it was very interesting that if you look there's always an infra test poll came out this evening that shows sunday evening now which actually listed migration which was an issue which kept coming up time and time again during these election campaigns voters actually listed that as the fall of most important issue in terms of what affected how they voted instead they were more focused on issues of domestic. of education and housing and environment and it's parties like the greens who have really they have quite a strong campaign in really getting in touch with this kind of nisha nowadays really of making sure that they were addressing the issues which people really care about but of course this movement away from these main parties is now a european wide trend and our chief political editor of the cook and she was down in bavaria on sunday evening and she actually spoke to mark about exactly that and he of course is the leader of the europeans european peoples party in the european parliament we can look. probably have european wide the pregnant they should be have european wide from left and right rising populism and even extremists in the national listen on the floor that's why germany is not an island in such a political framework and that's why we have to give an answer but my computer answer must be to show people a vision to show people a future inflation for what they want what they have as challenges in that they do life on the table and if he can give positive ions as if he can convince of his good visions then i think he can be still a successful was a sees you too late to change its rhetoric which at times was a space is that is similar to the far right if. the migration thing is all over your old one of the dominating issues nobody can can award a debate about migration but what we have to do from now on this is not about the results will be achieved but we did but we managed in the last three years of the two thousand and fifteen it's achievements on the turkish border on the military and border that we really reduce the numbers of illegal migrants to the european union dramatically so let's talk about success stories that is a base for winning back the trust. what does all this mean for germany's national government here and then this is certainly going to send traumas back here and this isn't the first time for another test of merkel's power the head of that conservative and social democratic government but of course looking ahead we do have more state elections coming up in hessen in just a couple of weeks and that will again be another kind of a take of the temperature another litmus test for exactly how german faces a feeling right now and that really could have even bigger effects of course running up there in tests as one of merkel's biggest longtime allies said that would be a huge blow to her if her conservatives in the state of has then lost that majority that as well so definitely want to watch right that is if you want to watch and we will be watching that here and. that's all correspondent political correspondent kate brady thank you for your time you watching. news still to come we'll take you to syria is the last major raid rebel stronghold way a deadline to protect civilians has just awesome. but first now to some of the other news stories making news around the world and augment at the top of this birthday party in south texas is that into a shooting four men died in the fifth one was wounded or voice they say the shooting happened saturday afternoon in tufts that's near corpus christi and involved family members the cause of the argument is not yet clear. e.u. officials say brakes of negotiations have not yet sealed a deal on britain's divorce to this despite the earliest speculation fueled by a surprise visit to brussels that was by breaks that secretary dominic robb a meet and rather a meeting off a best of his from the twenty seven other member states officials say talks will resume winced at twin stays e.u. summit two of the most contentious figures within the roman catholic kate brady is joining me now in studio kate so saudi arabia is the second biggest buyer of german arms we know that not even the given conflicts has been a deterrent in terms of their relationship do you think that this is going to be the final straw and it certainly is looking that way in saudi arabia when it comes to germany's arms exports is quite an exception there is in fact a part in included in the current coalition government contract which states that germany would not export any arms to countries involved in the yemen conflict with the exception of any deals that were made before this coalition was formed earlier this year but it does seem with the kind of rhetoric that we're hearing from merkel and all the cabinet members including the german foreign minister it does seem that this could indeed be the final straw all right so we now have from saudi arabia the riyadh sais that yes he did die in a fistfight inside its consulate in istanbul they've said that the crown prince mohammed bin silent knew nothing about that germany and other western powers they've not quite bought into that heavy they certainly haven't and already just over the weekend we've heard now a joint statement from germany from. the u.k. demanding an urgent clarification of exactly what happened to that they are demanding that the explanation needs to be backed by credible facts and so we can expect i think to see more action and more coordinated action in response to what's going on right now merkel's already said today as well that she would continue to be in contact with her international partners when it comes to a coordinated response just about the relationship between germany and saudi arabia going forward what's likely to develop in that regard but it really is quite interesting that german and saudi arabian diplomatic ties only really thought. just this year and germany and saudi arabia returned to their ambassadors and just in september they had actually gone through some long months of rather for steve frosty relations due to some comments made by the former german foreign minister and so all of that work to rebuild could now be we could see that actually forming flacks now that the of course it was actually the former foreign minister gabriele who made some comments which was interpreted as criticism of saudi arabia an interference in lebanese affairs and so but it's now the current foreign minister who has been working in recent months to rebuild that relationship with saudi arabia but if the response that we see now from saudi arabia isn't to the satisfaction of merkel and of the western european powers we could see that relationship to to write in once again right. political correspondent kate brady thank you for your insights president donald trump has told reporters that the u.s. will unilaterally pull out of a nuclear arms agreement with russia the landmark intermediate range nuclear forces treaty was negotiated more than thirty years ago by then u.s. president ronald reagan and soviet leader mikhail gorbachev it bans nuclear and conventional missiles with ranges of five hundred to fifty five hundred kilometers trump accused russia of violating the pact something must the denies. this is what the drama is about medium range nuclear ballistic missiles that have been on a self-imposed by the u.s. and russia since the end of the one nine hundred eighty s. that may be about to change u.s. authorities believe russia may have developed weapon systems like these in breach of the intermediate range nuclear forces treaty. we're not going to let them violate a nuclear agreement and go out and do weapons that we're not allowed to wear that one said it stayed in the agreement and we

kate brady joining us here in the studio welcome to both of you kate what are we to make of the results tonight i think the biggest takeaway is as we heard from just shortly before is really this continuing trend of an erosion of germany's main stream parties and this in turn is affecting and creating a huge change in germany's political landscape so of course the two main parties that we're talking about here at least in the various cases the c.s.u. the conservative bavarian sister party to merkel's conservative c.d.u. and also the social democrats and of course the social democrats would never they never had the best results in bavaria anyway but of course on if you reflect that into the federal level this is something that we're seeing time and time again in germany right now but also beyond germany as well you're seeing the mainstream parties crumbling away and into. and as we've seen here in bavaria to the sea even in the greens and they a.f.d. further away from the center of germany's political spectrum they can the gains from the failings of the social democrats and the conservatives and this is going to be felt all the way back to it and let's talk a little bit more about the implications for berlin and constantine i'll turn to you how do you see the broader implications not only of the national level for the government but also for the chancellor. it seems to me that all parties of the two mainstream parties that have suffered these losses are really very temperate right now in their responses they're still trying to test the waters there hasn't been any any major you know backstabbing or any major sort of blame game there have been some little stabs but i think everyone is just trying to see you know what's going to happen in the next days and everyone's trying to position themselves so i think that's one thing that we can see in the next few weeks you know a lot of politicking a lot of you know playing politics a lot of trying to sort of to safeguard here your position i think what we're also going to see is a lot of talk and more talk about that fragmentation of the party system so i think german parties are keenly aware of sort of the historical precedent that we have in germany i mean we've talked about this fragmentation being a fact of politics all over the west and europe but i think nowhere. parties so so keenly aware of the sort of the dangers of fragmentation i mean other than other countries fragmentation is much more extreme look at the netherlands for example it's an extremely fragmented party system there but i think in germany the ideal fragmentation given the volume on history given the sort of the president is just much much much much more extreme than in other countries. sorry forgive me there for interrupting you but perhaps there's a lesson to be learned here for the c.s.u. because part of their way of dealing with this fragmentation especially to the right of their party which is where the a.f. . lies is that they really incorporated a lot of that party's rhetoric a lot of the issues and there was a poll that was taken actually from the voters which analyzed that strategy and it said that seventy three percent of former c.s.u. voters complained that their party focused too much on the topic of migration and neglected other issues kate could that be the c.s. used biggest problem. and what could be other parties like i think that certainly played a huge role in the loss of sand of course what i always found is really quite amazing down in bavaria when you take over the c.s.u. party leader who is also the interior minister on a federal level for germany when it came to bavaria and wholesale for dealing with the migration crisis which is what point out no longer exists in germany we're not having hundreds and thousands of migrants arriving every day to germany was that no longer exists and in real terms but varia hosts a whole actually dealt with the migration crisis down in bavaria of course many migrants refugees asylum seekers when they first arrived in germany came of this so the border first arrived in bavaria they actually dealt with it very well but politically it was a disaster because he say whole first specially built it up to be this huge issue and that largely then came off the back of the results that we s
