brown is joining me now from the pentagon. ryan, what are you hearing about this plan? >> well, kate, we're told as of now the u.s. military has identified over 7,000 troops that are going to take part in this mission. that's in addition to the 2,000 national guard troops that were sent earlier in the administration that are already on the border. so that brings you to 9,000, getting close to 10,000 troops working on border security. now, most of these troops are support forces. there's engineers, planners, helicopter crews that can fly border patrol agents to various spots along the very large border. but again, you're starting to see a very significant increase in the number of troops that will not be dealing with migrants themselves but will be in support, building fencing, vehicle barriers, roads, that kind of thing. but a large contingent, none the less. very similar to the size of u.s. forces, combat forces in places like afghanistan, iraq, and syria. now, we don't know how much this operation is going to be costing. military officials say they don't have a dollar figure yet and they haven't even identified

brown is "outfront" live at the white house for us. pamela, what is the president trying to do here with whitaker. >> reporter: well, you see the president, kate, distancing himself from matt whitaker amid this criticism about his past comments on the russia probe as well as his qualifications to be the acting attorney general and as you laid out there, this is a familiar pattern with the president when it comes to his associates who are under scrutiny and it also, as you pointed out, does not bode well for whitaker in terms of him becoming the permanent pick to run the justice department. but we can tell you that the relationship between president trump and matt whitaker has been forged over the last several months as the president's relationship with jeff sessions deteriorated. as one official i spoke to today said, whitaker was seen in the west wing frequently. he was in dozens of meetings with the president in the oval office. the two spoke on the phone on several occasions. now it is true, according to our reporting, that he was initially put on the president's radar by former white house counsel don mcgahn as well as the federalist socie

brown is starting us off. the special counsel told the judge they believe what cohen is saying, president trump just called him a liar. >> that is what is so significant here, kate. the president coming out today and saying michael cohen, his former attorney for more than a decade is lying to reduce his sentence. here's why that's significant. robert mueller doesn't believe michael cohen is lying in this version of events that was laid out in the court documents, that he misled congress about the trump tower moscow meeting. he is now saying that, in fact, there were communications about the deal throughout the campaign for president, through june 2016 when donald trump is a presumptive republican presidential nominee, not january 2016 as he initially had told congress and also that donald trump had been briefed on trump tower moscow project that never came to fruition on multiple occasions, not just the three times that michael cohen had initially told congress. now what stuck out to me is that the fact that this is the version special counsel believes, but also it appears we're getting a window into what the president's response is in those questions from rober

brown is "outfront" now live at the white house for us this evening. pamela, even the white house staff, it appears, was caught off guard by this. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, kate. president trump's decision to effectively fire his attorney general, jeff sessions, on the same day he was touting victory in the midterms certainly caught at least some white house staffers by surprise in terms of time, though there was widespread understanding among aides that this was something president trump wanted to do shortly after the midterms, but as we know, the president had openly been ridiculing jeff sessions for many months. he was upset that he had recused himself. but instead of the president calling up jeff sessions himself, he had his chief of staff, john kelly, do so, calling him before that contentious press conference, telling him that he needed to turn in his resignation letter and president trump was asked about jeff sessions and he dodged the question, saying i'll talk about that later. i didn't want to do anything before the midterms. but we know the president had repeatedly asked jeff sessions, who had recused himself from the probe, to regain control. that
