let's bring in kate kelly. >> i think there are a fundamental issues coming into play. the largest spectators came out with a report indicating that excessive oil speculation is costing americans 56 cents a gallon at the bump. >> that's a pretty bold figure from goldman sachs and not entirely out of context. they have said that speculative long positions, forbes recently took goldman's premium and turned it into an extra 56 cents at the pump but goldman won't hawk the speculators. still, we're surely likely to debate this as the driving season gets under play. what is happening is a huge factor. >> yes. and the other thing, of course, is how much liquidity -- we've had a lot of central banks where ecbs, bank of japan and uk as well, where liquidity can put premium into the price of oil. >> traders are just very focused on iran and the uncertainty there. it's huge in this space. the sea born market is physical or cash oil. it's really trading at a treem yes, ma'am to bremplg futures. if you look at that you see we have as much oil as we're asking for. spare capacity that

mary thompson and kate kelly, two lovely ladies, join us to talk about the numbers and more.ary, what do investors really need to know internally about these numbers. >> a couple of things. first of all, the company said that what really helped to drive their results in the quarter, fiscal first quart wesh there was an easing of concerns about the situation in europe. that helped to drive an increase in revenue at both their investment banking business as well as their fixed income. both of them showing very strong results. quarter over quarter and year over year. the equity side, keep in mind jefferies is is traditionally an equities firm, revenue a little weaker on a year over year basis. it was up quarter over quarter. importantly they said the trading vtrade ing volumes were weak in their quarter. the volume actually picked up toward the end of february and spilled over into the -- into march. that could bode well for some of their rivals like goldman sachs and morgan stanley. >> mary, just tease up that thought here. what does this bode for the big investment banks? >> i

kate kelly is here with duh tails on this one. >> yes. after the op ed piece in which greg smith former equity based in london called goldman sachs environment inevitable book sales have begun. some submitted bids by the end of the week. the bidding has gotten to well north of $1 million i'm told and perhaps we could see millions being paid to greg smith. apparently he and his agent are presenting the book as a memoir and a kind of cautionary tale for wall street. smith apparently see himself as a friend of the industry, a friend of goldman sachs who wants to use his experience there over the course of 12 years to kind of talk about how culture and ethics can and should improve. that was the tone of his "new york times" piece, sue. and we can probably expect to see more of that in the book. a decision on who's going to publish the book could come any time now i'm told. i'll try to keep viewers posted throughout the week. >> excellent. look forward to it very much. wonder who the front runner will be on that. the one with the deepest pocke

kate kelly has more on that back at hq. good morning, kate. >> good morning, simon. morning.how you. >> i'm worried about cotton. >> cotton has been up a share. it marks the eighth day out of the last ten that cotton was in the green. last week, in fact, it was the only major commodity to close up when there was a lot of red on the screen. now can investors get in on it. some have a concern on supply of cotton stocks. they announced a ban on cotton exports only to second-guess the decision in the same week. the decision is yet unresolved, but cotton buyers have been grabbing up stocks. if you look at the open interest, it peaked march 13 and has since slowed a bit. then there's the usda's cotton planting survey whose results are due out at 8:00 tomorrow morning. delta growers have a lot less acreage than expected for cotton growing in the next season. since other crops can be grown on the same land, there is some variability every year. if that's the case, we should look for a rally in cotton futures in january, guys. >> the gap susis usually at the higher end of that chain.
