although -- are we going to go to kate kelly here? kate kelly is standing by. kate right now. >> reporter: hey, kelly. thanks so much. i'm standing outside the federal courthouse where just within the last couple of hours matthew martoma, former s.a.c. hedge fund trader, was convicted on three counts, two of securities fraud, one of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, guilty on all three charges, and face a maximum of 45 years in prison. although, the sense is it will be farless than that when he is actually sentenced, probably a few months from now. obviously, a blow for the defense. also a blow for s.a.c. s.a.c. has already been hobbled by a raft of investigations into insider trading, both civil and criminal. they settled as a corporation with the government over some of these charges late last year. and they are now in the process of converting to a family office that will manage only the money of the founder, steve cohen, and certain employees and family members. things got very heated this afternoon as we've seen. there was a scuffle that broke out jus

kate kelly has those details. kate? >> reporter: hey, scott, thanks so much.ural gas has lived up to its reputation this winter as the window do maker. widow maker. however, some energy funds have come out ahead. including cumulus energy based in london up an amazing 28% through late february. goldfinch capital and lochridge up 8% to 9% as of this week. they actually took us inside their operations yesterday where an eight-man team divided up by region, looks for price gaps between one part of the u.s. and another. a strategy that's helped the roughly $100 million fund generate pretty solid profits over the years. cio david dunn says he knows, though, he's dealing with a very volatile market here. >> they call these the widow makers for a reason. i've been trading natural gas since the mid-90s when all this stuff was really starting to become liquid and active. and i have seen, you know, many, many issues with some of these risky trades. and it's not hard to find yourself on the wrong side of a weather event. >> reporter: you know, scott dunn is not alone in t

first to kate kelly on the other energy plays investors have been looking at beyond the oil and gas. thanks, sue. with the east coast reeling as tyler and steve just told us as well as other parts of the country from yet another major snowstorm, natural gas is rallying again to the $5 mark and beyond, but gas, you said, not the only commodity benefiting from the coldest winter in recent memory. power is, too. look at these charts. around the country, power plants operating at reduced capacity are ramping up production again, including in places like texas, where an unusually cold winter in anticipation of a heavily air conditioned summer prompted the pourer company loom nant to add capacity. keepers feeling it in pocket boos books already. an options trader, power doubled from december to january and a mom of two in flushing teing, cg towards $800 to $1,000 overall. that might have something to do with power plants, reduced in recent years making the power available all the more expensive. still energy administration administration predicting a modest electricity rate hike of what we

kate kelly is at the new york stock exchange. we will check in with her in just a minute. we start, though, with frozenomics. take a look at this chart of gas, up another percent today, a percent in the last month. one big reason of course is because new weather models, this big move today, 40% in one month, new weather models came in overnight. wsi senior meteorologist dan leonard telling us today to expect cold now throughout much of the nation into quote, the first week of march and beyond. originally, leonard's model said the cold would back off by the second week of march, but now that part of the forecast has changed. jeff grossman trades nat gas for brg brokerage. where do we stand? where do you see prices moving? >> i personally think we may have topped out near term but again, tomorrow we have some very interesting, we have figures coming out about inventories. there is talk of 200 to 255. we have a possibility of this market probably reaching its goals and probably selling off. this market has gone way above what most people even considered normal range here, and

let's find out from kate kelly.least loved it. >> it's true. as i'm about to explain, they haven't abandoned it all together. >> i would be surprised if they did. >> they have a fundamental thesis they think it will continue performing. some hedge funds are still clearly hanging in there. that said, we are well past correction territory for this year alone. there are a couple issues going on. there's no doubt that a number of traders close out these longs. they also have mixed feelings about the yen although it continues to do better compared to the dollar. you're having to buy more dollars -- you're having to use more dollars to buy yen. in the low 100s now, deutsche bank is expecting 115, perhaps even this year. kyle bass and others say it could go to 200 or even 300. of course, there has long been talk of abanomics, that it's sure to fail. there are a number of hedge funds that haven't given up yet. several i talked to say they plan to re-enter the japanese stock market and are waiting for the right moment. one s

you knew there was breaking news because kate kelly was standing here off camera and she's got something for us on the fed right now. >> i'm honored by that introduction, bill. but the fed has just come out with final guidelines with rules for dodd/frank that will effect foreign banks with u.s. subsidiaries in terms of capital requirements, some of their structural requirements. just to run through it quickly, the foreign banks with u.s. subsidiaries will be required to put together intermediate holding companies to improve their structural management. the u.s. banks as expected will be expected to meet larger capital standards as well. the deadlines for this are rolling depending what you're dealing with but it's either 2015 or 2016 depending who is involved. a statement from janet yellen in accordance with this final rule proposal which, of course, is subject to comment, the sudden failure or near failure of large financial institutions can have destabilizing effects on the financial system. as the crisis also highlighted, the traditional framework for supervising and regulating major
