it happened this afternoon abc 7 news reporter kate larson there live with what happened. kate? >> reporter: of course this is absolutely devastating and our hearts go out to the family and entire school community here. we don't know many details officially about the accident other than it happened on the yard and students and faculty witnessed what happened. on thursday around 1:00 in the afternoon a young student died after she was injured on the playground at mark day school. an independent k through 8 school in san rafael. in a statement the head of the school said members of our staff witnessed the accident, immediately called 911 and did their best to at minister care to the student. he was transported to kaiser hospital right around the corner from the school. unfortunately he didn't survive. a retired firefighter was at the school for an unrelated event and heard about what happened. >> it was a difficult call and it's tough for the parents and everybody involved and the first responders for them too. >> reporter: the school said they're working with authorities to inves

kate larson has the story. >> on christmas eve around 4:30 in the afternoon while the park was open to visitors a group of people were hiking on a trail in muir woods. >> without warning, a tree fell on hillside trail where the three were walking. a man was pinned down by the tree and killed. a woman was hurt by falling debris and taken to a hospital. and a third man escaped uninjured. >> the marin county said they found the man unconscious and lifeless on the ground. the 28-year-old lived in minnesota. in a statement, the golden gate national recreation area said in part the hillside trail and part of the main trail remain closed until the trunk and branches are removed after the holiday weekend. the tree fell of natural, unknown causes following a persistent series of winter storms over the last week and a half prior to this incident. >> we've had considerable amount of rain here that's caused issues that were not normally used to. so, it is mother nature. >> would be visitors to the park today seem undeterred by the incident which happened on the 105th anniversary of john muir's own

i'm kate larson, abc 7 news. >>> the oakland city administrator put in her resignation after more than four years in office. she sent an email to employees saying her last day would be march 11th. the chronicle reports that landreth clashed with city council over the past year. >>> new developments in the east bay where one of the dogs stolen last week in fremont la beehas b found. unique, the dog, was found yesterday in oakland. she was sold to someone but will be returned to her owner. unique was one of more than two dozen dogs in the transportation van that got stolen in fremont last monday. the van was recovered in oakland with 24 dogs inside. now that mean there's is just one dog still missing. it's a 3-month-old english bulldog named papo. there's a reward for his safe return. >>> california's insurance commissioner expanded its one-year ban on insurance companies dropping policies for homes in wildfire prone 200,000 new homes are covered in te order. the temporary ban protects people living in or around the perimeter of one of 16 wildfires that burned in october. >>> all right.
