. >> news reporter kate larsson is live in san francisco. you were on the roads tonight. how was it? >> reporter: dan, it was super lousy. as sandhya was saying this isn't the worst rain we'll see this week. let's hope we have a smoother commute tomorrow. rough roads and rain make for a bumpy and congested commute. >> it's been terrible. traffic is worse than usual. >> reporter: red taillights as far as the eye could see in san francisco. the deck confident bay bridge was wet and full of cars on the road ahead and behind. and from the surface streets to freeways oakland was jammed up with traffic, too. even gas stations were a mess. >> i had to maneuver around you know cars and trucks and so for the. yeah, it took a little while to line up for gas. >> reporter: what is it about the rain that makes drivers go nuts? >> i don't know. i think they get cautious. >> reporter: earlier in the day, a three-foot hole opened up in an elevated section of u.s. 101 on the sxwound side near grand avenue shutting down a lane and creating even more congestion near sfo. >> do you have any

kate larsson has the story of a family who hid in a rite aid store. >> their home burnt down in of thisrtheast paradise. he and others survived thanks to a drugstore and heroic efforts. >> people are panicking right now. >> reporter: shawn documented his family as the camp fire climbed towards their homes in meg gallal last thursday. >> i got a quarter tank of diesel. >> reporter: the town lost power it the morning of the fire. shawn didn't think he had enough fuel to drive out of town and evacuated to a nearby rite aid. >> i knew that was a safe zone. >> reporter: shawn, his girlfriend and dogs went to bed in his camper till the fire broke them up. >> it's 1:00 a.m. there's emmers bombing cowan. >> every emmer coming over right aide was starting spot fires across the street and mobile homes, i mean, every single ember was fire. >> reporter: shawn says firefighters showed up and broke into the rite aid so the about 30 people could shelter inside while they made sure the drugstore didn't catch fire. >> many of the people inside rite aid lived across the street and seeing their houses bur

. >>> kate larsson is live in paradise right now. the rain today has been a challenge. >> reporter: fortunately the last few minutes the rain slowed down a bit. there has been a lot. they are expecting one to two inches by midnight and more rain storms throughout the week. you just heard the sheriff list off people who have passed away in this fire most of them seniors. the community where i'm standing was for folks 55 and older. today crews were looking for the remains in the dust. looking around the apple tree mobile home park in paradise it's chilling to imagine what the seniors living here experienced when their community caught fire. now 13 days later as rain finally dampens the remaining fiber in the hills above, search and rescue crews pick through seemingly endless heaps of burnt and now wet rubble looking for those who did not make it out alive. some we're told will never be found. >> the briefings we are having with our guys are the work you are doing is going to leave a mark on you. it's going to do some damage to yu. >> r
