kate snow? >> on the i-5 corridor. i actually know it pretty well. my sister lives in portland. north of medford, three quarters of the way down the state. it's a rural area. i was out this last summer. it is not a hugely populated area. as we said on the air, 20,000 people live in that area. just to recap, the oregon office of emergency management telling nbc news now that initial reports indicate that seven to ten people were shot and killed by at least one gunman is the way they're putting it. >> clint van zandt, i fear you're also correct that this will kick off a whole new wave of coverage about gun laws, about the intersection of gun laws and mental health in this country and that in the coming hours and days we'll learn more about the background of another troubled person. >> well, right now, brian, we're hearing reports of parents trying to get on campus, trying to find their children. as you indicate, the average student is an adult in his or her 30s, yet there are younger people, as we

kate snow? >> couple of new details, brian. we're getting a briefing right now from sacred heart medical center in river bend, oregon, one of the hospitals that took -- secondarily took victims from the scene. they have three victims there. here is the stunning part. among those three victims there are something between 18 and 34 gunshot wounds in those three victims. so, this is clearly a horrific scene. not just a mass shooting, but just -- i don't even know how to describe it. just a devastating, devastating shooting with multiple, multiple wounds in each victim. and the other hospital, mercy hospital, which is right in town, are saying people are in surgery being treated as we speak. this is such a fluid situation, brian, in terms of who is wounded and, unfortunately, how many deceased we have. >> jim carve gnaw, if that comes true, that these victims each have between -- >> between the three of them, 18 to 34 gunshot wounds. >> anything we can surmise from that? does that mean a small caliber? what does that mean? >> it me

kate snow is here with more on the special and interview of 27 women. nice to have you here.in itself to sit in a room with these 27 women -- >> it was powerful. you and i both know we don't do interviews that large. it is the largest interview i have done. i think what came across is that they have a comradery now. a lot of them didn't know each other before sitting down in that room with us but they heard about each other. they fed off of each other. what comes out tonight are parallels and patterns to their stories. >> so that comes up. one of the women we heard from said money talks she says at one point. none of these women can sue at this point. they cannot press charges so why have they decided to come now and speak out? >> that is part of why they are speaking out now because the statutes of limitation are long gone. these are sometimes decades old charges that they are making. they feel if they come together now and share their stories not just about bill cosby but they think it will effect the way we treat victims of sexual assault and rape. they said they felt emba

nbc's kate snow interviewed the women about their claims. she joins us now in new york city. ate, many of these women have done individual interviews before. how did you get all of them together in one room? >> pat, we started working on this months ago and at the time of our interview we reached out to everyone who had gone public at that time and offered them the opportunity to come speak with us. 27 women agreed to come to that group interview and two others in another setting. so 29 women total and that's how we did it, but i guess the important part is why they wanted to talk. they felt very strongly that it's time for their voices to be heard and not just for bill cosby, but in their view because it might help other women who are victims of rape and sexual assault to feel empowered or speak out. >> were any reluctant to get together or be seen in a group this large? >> no. i think those that agreed to come to los angeles, we flew them to l.a. to a ballroom at a hotel there. they were ready. they were ready, but i won't say it was easy. pat, in that room, you can imagine

on nbc's "dateline," more than two dozen women shared their allegations against bill cosby with kate snowe. >> i was drugged and raped. >> i was sexually assaulted. >> he flipped me over and raped me. >> the room was spinning. >> i was just holding my head. >> we're using our voices to say this is not okay. >> how many of you believe bill cosby raped you? >> the accusers range from 46 to 80 years old, allegations date back decades, but they say it's hard to ignore the patterns in the stories. as for cosby's deposition, huff filed the lawsuit saying he attacked her at the playboy mansion in los angeles in the 1970s when she was 15 years old. claiming cosby gave her alcohol before the alleged assault, and cosby has not been charged with any crimes. >>> well, october is domestic violence awareness month, and agencies that help pennsylvania families in need say they're worried that their doors could close because of the budget batter in harrisburg. the state has gone more than 100 days without a spending plan. programs that rely on state funding are not getting any cash, and that means people
