this has been a problem from the start, kate. i remember talking to you about this in march, we weren't doing good testing at that point. surprising, i think, to people, and we've never gotten ahead of this. this was based on a cdc report that said we may be undercounting by about tenfold. look at number on the screen. 2.6 million people roughly infected. they think it could be well over 20 million. just lack of testing. what could it mean? it's more widespread than we've confirmed. one. that's bad news. any good news in it, kate, look at the fatality ratio. hard to talk about. number of deaths over number of infections. dramatically increase number of infections from 2.6 million to over 20 million, it does bring down the fatality ratio. how likely this is to cause someone to die. we still don't have a good idea how lethal this virus is. it's been all over the place in different parts of the world, but clearly this is a much more widespread virus than i think we've realized up until recently. >> and if we can just throw up a grap

kate. we just got new numbers from the state of florida, and though there is a slight dip from the record breaking, more than 10,000 single cases that we saw yesterday. it still shows a surge in the sunshine state. close to 9,500 cases recorded yesterday in the state of florida. that's about the third biggest day they have had in new drives cased and the big question is what these numbers are going to look like after the fourth of july weekend. there will almost undoubtedly be a surge, the kind that we saw after memorial day and it may be an uneven one. keep in mind, governor ran desantis has allowed local officials to effectively determine what the restrictions are in their municipalities, in the southeastern part of the state, broward, palm beach and miami day county meaning beaches will be closed this weekend, but there are strict curfews in place for restaurants and bars and here facing the gulf of mexico on clearwater beach, no real restrictions on beach access. take a look behind me.

kate balduan continues our coverage right now. >> hello, everyone. i'm kate balduan. thanks so much for joining me. breaking news from the supreme court. major decisions having to do with president trump's financial records, records that the president has refused to show to the public for years. in a 7-2 decisions the court has for now blocked congress and new york prosecutors from accessing the president's financial documents. the justices sending both cases back to lower courts for further review, but justices made one thing clear, that the president is not completely immune from facing a speena. >> the justices in the majority rejecting this claim from the president's attorneys that donald trump is completely immune from all aspects of criminal prosecution while in office. let's get to cnn's jessica schneider live outside the supreme court and has been diving through these decisions. jessica, lay it out for us. >> reporter: the supreme court really laying out the bottom line here in that the president for one is not absolutely immune from these criminal subpoenas w

i talk to sources every day about this, kate. and what i would say is i think optimism is still warranted here. we're still in the early days and nothing will, you know, be proven until we can actually show this vaccine is safe and its effective. and we still have time to get there. but i think the drum beat of evidence so far has been encouraging for sure. i think with regard to antibodies waning over time -- they say you may lose antibodies every 70 or so days according to a new study. i think that's something that vaccine nolgss, people focused on this, are paying attention to. there's all different ways to measure immunity as i myself am starting to recognize talking to these researchers. antibodies is an easy way to measure it. but the way the body responds to an infection through something known as t cells and something known as b cells to some extent also play a significant role. two things to keep in mind. one is that antibodies alone may not be the only measure of immunity. people may still have immunity even if antibody

i'm kate bolduan. for the first time the united states is crossing the 50,000 mark for new cases in a single day. spikes in several states, at least fooi states now setting their own new records. for new infections. 37 states are heading in the wrong direction. and i don't hear anyone saying other than the president that this is going to change for the better any time soon. states are responding. some like california and arizona and texas including are tightening restrictions to try to keep people more socially distanced but are the moves enough to turn the tide? we'll ask the experts but amid all of this uncertainty one thing is certain. the data if he is looking at it is not changing the president's mind. >> the crisis is being handled. some areas that were very hard hit are now doing very well. some were doing well and we thought they might be gone and flare up and we are putting out the fires. >> one of the fires right now in florida. vice president mike pence is traveling there today and as the co
