i'm katherine sharp. we are very excited today to have a press release from the mayor and have him join us. this has been an amazing experience for those of us from the very beginning. we look forward to sharing that story with you. without further ado, mayor lee. >> thank you, katherine. thank you very much for being here. i wanted to join this great moment of celebration for fibrogen, which is more than a serial. that was what i first thought when i saw that name. i want to congratulate fibrogen and all the companies that have spouted up. i had -- the creation of this experiment with bioand life sciences here in mission bay. now a few years later, it really began in 2009 where there were five companies that started in this building. today, there are 23 of these microbusinesses that are doing biotechnology research, clinical laboratory research as well as applications for that. right here, the three areas of work that they're doing. they told me they're here because of the talent, the graduates coming ou

katherine sharp. all people that work on this project every day all the time. the part i can attest to is that katherine has kept me calmed down at various times about this project, and that's her job in part, which is no fun. i think that pat kontraneo, our v.p. of finance, has been a leader and facilitator across the entire spectrum of activities, and pat is very self-afacing and doesn't seek to credit himself. but i know what he does and he does a lot to make sure things get done right in this program. so thank you, pat. when we started, we came from south san francisco, and we came here because amgen, who competes with us in the markets, and jenentech were fighting over space there. there was a period of time when the rents in san francisco were higher than the rent here. the total cost here was still higher, but that one moment, i knew only happened once every couple decades. and so we jumped on it. we got our board to agree to let us come peer. the shorensteen family built this building. they did a very, very good job, but when we got here, we were alone

katherine was like a west coast mom to me during that case. feeling is that katherine's years on this earth, she's had a lot of heartache, a lot of joy. and it is just very sad to me to think that this had to end in her later years, that she had to have this kind of tragedy. and i just -- i pray for them. what are they going through? they are going to wait for the verdict. i think it's going to come down favorably for them. they will go home, get on with their lives and her daughters they are good daughters and i say god bless them and my trars will always be with them. as far as the trial itself, it's been a long duration. michael's kids, as i said, they would never be in the courtroom. they didn't belong there. they don't belong there. they have to look to tomorrow because they have a good future ahead of them. >> i don't know if you were listening to my conversation with dr. drew penski but he was speaking about the children and certainly the members of the jury, the seven men, five women, that couldn't have been too far from mind in determ

>> that's right, katherine. the news came in a half hour ago. it is not positive. we saw arise in japan's jobless rate. the country's unemployment rate worsened in october for the first time in three months. the internal affairs ministry said the seasonally adjusted jobless rate sfood at 4.5%. up 0.4 percentage points since september. unemployed, 2.88 million, while people with jobs stood at 62.64 million. >>> now let's check the markets. overnight, the dow rebounded sharply on hopes of a stronger resolve by european leaders to tackle eurozone debt issues. to see how things are kicking off in japan, we go to ramin mellegard at the tokyo stock exchange. good morning. unemployment numbers were out for japan. taking this and overseas markets into account, how are stocks reacting so far? >> very good morning to you. taking to the unemployment numbers into account, which worsened as you said, but looks like markets really taking more of a cue from european and u.s. markets. let's have a look at the opening levels here this tuesday morning. you can see what i'm talking a

>> katherine, they filed for bankruptcy protection to keep creditors at bay. american airlines executives need time to turn the business around. american airlines and its parent firm amr said on tuesday that they had filed for chapter 11 protection at a new york court. total liabilities stand at $29.6 billion. amr said the carrier will continue regular operations while undergoing the restructuring process. the texas-based airline decided on rehabilitation through bankruptcy after talks with labor unions collapsed. american airlines was the only major u.s. carrier that had not filed for chapter 11 restructuring. the airline's business has deteriorated due to a decline in passengers since the september 11th attacks. other factors include soaring fuel costs and intensified competition with discount carriers. >>> u.s. consumer confidence bounced back as americans are optimistic about economic recovery. a u.s. research firm, the conference board, said its consumer confidence index rose to 56. that's up over 15 points from october, the biggest monthly gain since apr
