for more on this story, katherine cruz is joining us. she's host of the conversation program on hawaii, public radio. she's joining us from honolulu. thank you so much ms. cruz. wanna talk to a little bit about the situation is it is right now. i know we are waiting an update from officials. but to describe to us like what exactly we're expecting to hear in terms of an update. well, you know, our studio is here in honolulu, we're just about a block away from the way convention center. they've set up a staging area. you know, the whole focus is to get the visitors and you know, residents who are at these emergency shelters, they are on the island to get them out, you know, into hotel rooms or, or off the island just, you know, a to a, a better situation. so, you know, that's just happening a short way from our studios. you know, some people, uh, you know, flocked to those emergency shelters. we are, i think an excess of 2000 people. that number has dropped now down to 600. you know, we again heard the update on the fatalities. it went fro

unclear the few down the plan it's warming. climate was an enabler. heidi jo castro alger 0. katherine cruz is the host of the conversation on the hawaii public radio and she says the state is trying to find shelter for victims and get visitors of the island. i was watching tv the other night and saw the headlines about, you know, the evacuation orders that were going for so many neighborhoods and we thought, oh, this is not good news. and then now just to see things unfold over the, you know, the, the last couple of days, you know, the problem with those high winds we were expecting wins, you know, 50 to 60 miles an hour. we got more like 60 to 80. and you can't, you know, put up helicopters to fight those fires in winds that high and so that, unfortunately, you know, lead to a lot of these fires just spreading into that town as far as the buildings and structures that were damaged, of you know, initially yesterday it was more than 200 close to 300. now we're hearing it more. uh, more like the 1700 uh you know, closer to 2000. so we hope to get an update. you know, so many different agenci

. >>> the search for a saratoga teen missing over a month is focused on the santa cruz mountains. 17-year-old katherine schneider was last seen driving her car on july 5th. the car has been found but katherine has not be. marianne favro is along highway 35 with the latest developments. >> reporter: this is near where katie's car was found on monday. you can see that one lane of highway 35 is closed while search and rescue team members comb this area. and it has been a difficult task. in fact, at one point they had to tie a rope around this post and rappel down this steep hillside. searching for answers. today a santa clara county sheriff's department search and rescue team combed the mountains off of highway 35. the terrain so steep, they needed ropes to access some areas. this is south of castle rock state park near where deputies discovered 17-year-old katie schneider's white honda accord monday. katie was last seen more than a month ago leaving her saratoga home, driving in her car. according to her family, she did not have her cell phone. >> i'm very concerned why they just found the car now and no

the car of a missing south bay teenage girl has been found now in the santa cruz mountains, katherine schneider of saratoga has been missing for more than a month. now. her family say deputies found her white honda accord empty near castle rock state park. katherine was last seen on july 5th on surveillance footage near castle rock trail on skyline boulevard in los gatos. but still no sign of her. the homeless man accused of attacking a former san francisco fire commissioner has been arrested yet again. he was back in april that derrick was accused of beating don carman yanni with a metal pipe in the marina neighborhood. it was caught on surveillance cameras and you can see it here on the screen. the former fire commissioner had to be hospitalized with a skull fracture because of that attack. the homeless man was taken into custody, but then later released a stay away order restricted him from entering the marina neighborhood. but police arrested him last week on suspicion that he had violated that order. doty is set to appear in court next. at the end of the month. >> oakland police,
