investigators say dna found on one of the bombs is not a match for katherine russell, the widow of tamerlan tsarnaev. russell's attorneys say she'll continue to meet with law enforcement to provide as much assistance to the investigation as she can. meantime, the death certificate for tamerlan tsarnaev says he died from gunshot wounds and blunt trauma following a gun fight with police. authorities say he ran out of ammunition before his brother dzhokhar dragged his body under a vehicle while fleeing the seen. 19-year-old dzhokhar remains in custody at a prison in fort devens, massachusetts. and authorities have been searching the woods near the university of massachusetts dartmouth campus where dzhokhar was a student. they're not revealing what they're looking for but say there is no threat to public safety. >>> and there are new questions today about homeland security missteps surrounding the case. joining me now for more on that is jim cavanaugh, former atf bomb investigator and msnbc analyst. jim, good morning. thanks for being here. >> good morning, maria. >> now, a criminal complaint says one o

officials say that investigators are very interested in talking with t tamerl tamerlan's tsarnaev's widow, katherine russell. in talking with the widow, these are new photos, booking photos, mug shots from her arrest on shoplifting charges back in 2007. she is not, however, in custody now, as you know. nor has she been charged with anything yet. authorities want to know a lot from her, including a phone call we learned about she had with tamerlan shortly after the bombing. gloria borger has more on that. what do we know about this phone call? >> well, my colleague, deborah feyerick and i are reporting that she folk with her husband, tamerlan, after these pictures were plastered all over national television. what we don't know, anderson, is the exact nature of that conversation. my sources are not clear whether they spoke because she was horrified at what she saw, she was questioning whether this was, in fact, tamerlan, or whether she was tipping him off. what they do express some concern about is that she spoke with him, but apparently did not speak with law enforcement. now, that's not a crime, from a lega

meanwhile, tsarnaev's wife remains the object of fbi interest. >> reporter: katherine russell has tried to remain out of sight. we caught a glimpse of her being driven from her parents' home in rhode island but investigators still have questions for you such as what, if anything, she knew about the bomb plot. people who remember her from high school have questions too. wondering how she went from an outgoing daughter of a doctor to a quiet woman on welfare who converted to islam. aim knows taught her art at the local high school. you knew her as katie russell. what was she like? >> katie was a very good student. very talented. very intelligent. she was able to carry a good conversation and she had a lot of friends from what i noticed. >> reporter: what were her artistic abilities like? >> i would say she was top of her class. >> reporter: instead of art she studied communications where she met a young boxer, tamerlan tsarnaev, at a nightclub. in 2010 she was married. >> we wished them the best. we gave them their vows. that was it. >> reporter: he had never seen them before nor since. t

tsarnaev's widow is not among them. what, if anything, has the fbi been able to learn from katherine russell?o out to our erin mcpike in russell's hometown in rhode island. what are you learning? >> reporter: well, jake, there are still no conclusive answers from the fbi about katherine russell. they want as much as they can from her because of course she lived in that tiny apartment in cambridge with the tsarnaev brothers. but so far her attorneys put out a statement yesterday basically saying she doesn't want to deal with tamerlan's remains. that will be the duty of tamerlan tsarnaev's uncles, jake. >> and she put out a statement, her representatives put out a statement a day or two ago. i don't want to be parcing too much, but she expresses regret of the tragedy in boston but nowhere in her statement is there any sort of acknowledgment that she believes her husband was involved. are they denying that her now dead husband tamerlan tsarnaev played a role in this investigation like other family members, other tsarnaevs are saying? >> well, jake, as you know, katherine russell has not breathed

a new visit to the cambridge apartment of tamerlan tsarnaev and why they're looking even more closely than ever at his widow, american katherine russell. catherine herridge joins us live now from washington with the very latest. >> thank you. investigators sharpen their focus on the widow of tamerlan tsarnaev, investigators returned to the apartment in cambridge, massachusetts where residue was found in at least three areas of their apartment. f.b.i. spokeswoman confirming the search warrant as investigators some wearing white haz-mat suits entered the apartment. it's not immediately clear whether any items were taken as part of the marathon bombing investigation. two sources familiar with the case tell fox news katherine russell communicated with her husband after the bombing. once source said it included at least one phone call. the second source describing an e-mail possibly containing an attachment with includeed a surveillance photo. they want to know whether copies of an al-qaeda web magazine on his computer were downloaded and read by russell or by her husband. the lawyer for katherine russell did not respond to e-mail or phone

. >> turning to tamerlan tsarnaev, the older brother who is desiced, to his wife katherine russell. pair allegedly made the bombs in his apartment. there's also new information coming out there was some al qaeda material that had been downloaded on her computer although they don't know who did the downloading. but does the fact that all this took place presumably right in front of her, a reasonable person could see how could you not know when your husband is making bombs in your kitchen, is there enough there to tie her to it just by virtue of the fact it was all happening in her home and around her? >> you know, i think we need to know a lot more before we can answer that question definitively. her lawyer has said, i believe, that she had no idea what was happening, and it is just too soon to tell what the actual truth is, but for sure the thought in her lawyer's mind and in authorities' minds are what does she know and what would it take to get the information? that seems to be the most important thing right now, making sure they cover the waterfront and gather all the information
