guys didn't know each other, but matt and kathy-- >> we never met.t have the pleasure of meeting matt either. but my wife kathy through up in a small town in michigan and knew matt and went to cool with him. grade school through college and when he passed away on christmas night. she of course attended his funeral and only three weeks after the funeral that she developed a headache and it got worse, and eventually we took her into the e.r. not knowing what else to do about a headache, and it was there they diagnosed her with inoperable brain cancer and we had intended to try, clinical trials and whatever it was that could buy her more time, god had different plans and it was only 17 days later that she passed away. then, the two of you met, as a result of the memorial service? >> yeah, kathy, you know, she was such an extraordinary woman and had such an extreme capacity for love and more faith. on her last day, as she and i were essentially saying goodbye to each other, we knew the end was near, out of the blue, she said to me, call gina, and i tried

[applause] >> good afternoon. i can attest to the energy that is going on in the dining room this morning, having been there for a couple of hours this morning. there is sadness because we're leaving, and there's also a joy because of the new stage we're going to get up as sherry said, my name is kathy, 15 years ago i noticed an ad in the church bulletin. so i thought i would give it a try. i would come down here and began volunteering. when i first walked down that driveway of what used to be a garage, i noticed that i was on sacred ground, holy ground, if you will. there is an era of compassion and love and service and dignity and respect that i do not find any place else, and that is why i keep coming. 15 years, and i hope i can do even more. i wanted to share a very short story with you that sort of speaks to my experience here on a weekly basis. just before christmas, the wednesday before christmas, one of the guests motioned to me and said, i want to tell you about this new show that i have seen. and he was

he said, kathy have you heard? and i guess one of our administrative assistants had already left the office. he said a plane has hit the world trade center. and then i think maybe he knew a second plane had hit. e he said stay in touch. i said, i will. and i hung up the phone. i looked up and it was this secret service agent who they were the ones in the blue blazers who conducted tours. i had known him for over 20 years. he said, kathy, you know, two planes have hit the world trade center and a third has hit the pentagon and we're evacuating. i said, okay. i yelled at jeannie, and we grabbed our bags and we ran downstairs and i think as my mind went through as i walked out the door, i saw large weapons come again. i said this is strange. what is this going to do. i realized we were going into lockdown and they wanted us out of sight. they opened the gates and we began walking. there were about 20 of us at that point in the east wing who were left. and we started walking east. and jeannie's husband was in an office
