kathleen: i'm kathleen franz. i am the business history curator at the national museum of american history at the smithsonian institution. we are here in the object project today, looking at some of the amazing objects that have come out of storage and that you can interact with. i am here with the tiffany bicycle. it is a super-blingy example of a safety bicycle that was introduced in 1895 by tiffany and company for christmas, for the holiday market and for the , very distinguished and wealthy buyers. this was not a common bicycle used by everyone. but the form that it is, two two wheels of about the same size, is something that was new on the market, but aimed at a more middle-class consumer. -- a more middle-class audience. objects can tell us different stories. and this bike is packed full of stories. i will share a couple of them with you. one is that the viking was a craze in the 1880's and 1890's. so, bikes come first, then automobiles. and they overlap a little bit, but bicycles really paved the way, liter

kathleen, what is your take on this so far? is just breaking news, within the last 25 minutes or so. so what we have an air bus a320 involved in an accident but that is not suspicious because this is one of the most-popular jets that the airlines use across the world. egypt air had a famous accident about 17 years ago on a flight from jfk, headed to europe. it's pretty famous accident in history never resolved fully to the satisfaction of the egyptian government who had different findings on that one. on this accident tonight, if this is what it is, they're making that assumption because the airline sent out the tweet they did have a flight missing. it's gone about an hour and a half over, when etc. supposed to land when they went and announced it's missing and presumed probably in an stent. it appears it was lost over the mediterranean sea from the radar i'm looking at. perhaps 40-45 minutes from the shore of egypt. looks to be about. the last readout i have on it is cruise flight at 37,000 feet. speed normal. nothing abnormal

c kathleen, as a former commercial pilot, many assume it was a bomb because the aircraft dropped rell aretively quickly from altitude into the sea. could have fire have caused the mishap to unfold as quickly as that? >> yes. tucker, in fact, i've been very suspicious from the beginning about this, perhaps not being a bomb, and i'm glad to see we're looking at other factors. this acars report, what is it is there's a digital recording system that comes from the airplane separate from anything that the pilots enter and it goes via satellite up and back to the company. what that's showing is we had a cascade of problems that happened on that airplane over a two to three-minute period. if this was a bomb, highly unlikely that these events would happen over two to three minute period. it's not impossible for a very, very small bomb, but it does not appear that there's any breach of the fuselage, that there was a depressurization. so what it looks like is perhaps a fire near the cockpit, perhaps under the cockpit in what's called the avionics bay or ene compartment that spread rapidly into
