kathleen: a very quick question to fit in.f this you are talking about makes me think of two things. isn't this a reason inflation could get hotter? and is there a possibility that as long as there are stimulus checks, some people will be more inclined to stay home and wait for things to get even better or get back to the job they once had rather than going back to work? tom: on your first question, i think we will see price pressure this year. whether that turns into inflation over multiple years goes down to expectations. i have not seen a sign of that yet. i certainly am watching that. in terms of getting back to work, i think it is an interesting challenge. i do think you have a lot of parents, primary caregivers, also eldercare to have them stuck at home because kids have not been in school, because childcare has not worked for them. i am concerned what percentage of those will not come back into the market. this is related to anti-stimulus. the fact that so many of the support functions parents depend on have suffered tr

shery: our global economics and policy editor, kathleen hays. let's turn to china.t's v-shaped recovery from the coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the country's most significant economic shift, this rapid catch-up and likely toppling of the u.s. as the world's biggest economy. that's bring in tom in beijing. so how close is beijing to overtaking the united states? tom: pre-pandemic, the consensus view amongst economists was that that would happen in 2030, that china would become the number one economy by 2013. that has been move forward by some economists by two years to 2028 because of the way that china rebounded, posted growth, the only major economy to post growth in 2020 after crushing the virus. other metrics that took shape last year, china actually, in terms of global trade, increased that share by a record. in terms of foreign investment into china, that increased above the level of foreign investment that went to the u.s. for the first time on record. now, nomura are saying this could happen as soon as 2026 and that will be dependent on the currency str

shery: kathleen hays. our next guest agrees with chair powell seeing a temporary but on sustained rise in inflation. let's bring in shel smith, economist. always great having you on. of course, we did see yields stabilize on the commons. coming down from those recent highs. we have the treasury markets really facing a very trying week with another series of options. where are we headed on the yield level and what is the impact on the rest of the equity market? >> we think that you will see the yield settle down a bit. there has been a lot of chatter about inflation going up and certainly a lot of people trying to look for inflation everywhere they can possibly find it. i agree with both chairman powell and secretary alan that we have had a period over 15 years with inflation below target. very difficult and just unyielding down at that level. we have a substantial amount of slack in the economy and therefore a lot of room to move the economy to a higher rate of growth before we start seeing any inflation a

kathleen hays is here.ealand are two of the -- positive news stories when it comes to a post pandemic recovery, right? kathleen: yes, they are. it's one of the reasons economists, investors, the reserve bank of australia see basically a solid outlook for the year ahead. when we go over these numbers, one of the themes is, like a lot of economies, australia is still digging out of a hole. i don't want to gloss over the fact that even though the third quarter beat handily, and it does look like household spending was one of the reasons they did that, we are looking at the australian dollar. in terms of the gdp, the quarterly number was three point 1%, but given the year-over-year comparisons, and this is what most economists look at, that is the lower chart. the economy is still 1.1% below the growth it had at the end of 2019 so this is the issue. now how fast is the economy go as we look ahead? when you look at retail sales, for example, let's look at those. the recent retail sales number, looking at january
