we are joined by kathleen hall jamieson from annenberg center's constitution day civics survey to talkbout civics education. and last year when you joined us, you reported that civics knowledge seemed to be on the rise in 2021. did that trend continued 12 months later? guest: knowledge of branches is down somewhat. we are now under 47%. the news is not as good as it was last year but there is always good news. this is a chance to make sure that everyone is a little more aware of the responsibilities we have in your constitution. host: explain what the survey is and how long you have been doing it. guest: it is been going on for 20 years. it can you name three branches of government? can you name the freedoms protected in the first amendment. questions about the prerogatives of the various branches. when there is a constitutional matter who gets to decide what is or not the law? these are the presupposition all, if you don't understand these things happening in the news what makes sense. their capacities as a citizens will not be top of mind at times where you want them there. you might

colin as we talk to kathleen hall jamieson at the annenberg center. your mission there how do you do at? >> the. annenberg center is in pennsylvania and philadelphia and part ofyl it's his mission s to increase public knowledge and in particular student knowledge about rights and responsibilities of citizenship and within the foundational constitution.ce as part of that we hope to organize a civics renewal network. the c-span classroom as part of this and provides the best materials organized across the country and in able to assemble in schools but also for use in homes for the civics education a is everybody's obligation endedt up addition to parents at home and obligation to teachers and schools and on constitution day which is coming up at some obligation because the byrd amendment requires schools teach the constitution on constitution day. i would encourage anybody to go to the library of congress and national archives. our own annenberg classroom you can take a look at the civics renewal network. it costs nothing and we have a nice index on tha

. >> host: let me try to get in one of two more calls before running out of time with kathleen hall jamieson of the annenberg center. this is deborah in the faster maryland. go ahead. >> caller: i have written before about an e-mail and so forth about i think c-span ought to contribute to this education by doing something like how a bill becomes a law. i know it's simple but so many people that colin seemed to have no clue, for example, that there's something called a filibuster and the new hampshire gentleman i think it was who suggested the democrats could pass an abortion bill and make it legal don't understand that requires 60 votes in the senate. they did pass a bill in the house. you can't step your fingers even though you have nominal control of congress. there are a lot of things like that, that is the reason why the budget and tax legislation is within a ten year window and so forth. people simply are not aware of that i would like to see something like that on c-span, not just on the constitution because the filibuster is not in the constitution. the burglars are in the constitutio
