. >> chances are you never heard of kathryn johnson before the movie "hidden figures." a brilliant mathematician, the brains behind the launch of astronaut john glenn to orbit. ellen stofan, nasa's chief sintists knew a lot -- scientist knew a lot about her. >> we have been here all along. we always weren't welcome and she often time had to say i belong in the room. don't tell me to leave. alison: stofan worked at nasa became chief scientists until a few weeks ago, leaving to pursue new opportunities. she is a geologist and her research focuses on venus, the moons of saturn and mars. she spent much of her time at nasa trying to get humans on mars by the 2030's. she believes we may find alien life before then. >> the astronauts on mars are critical to answering this question that i think humans wondered about since we looked up at the night sky. are we alone? is there life elsewhere in the solar system? alison: she beliefs the answer is yes. though she is skeptical it will be complex life. she told me she feels the strongest about sending a message about climate change.
