kathy and i were down in charleston this weekend for one of those rare wonderful moments in life whenomething really great happens. our son, michael, got married. he and his beloved sarah became a family in the company of many of their friends and our friends, including some very special people who paid real attention to michael and sarah growing up. their sacrament of matrimony took place in an old huguenot church. the church of her family. father william george of my beloved jesuit performed the ceremony. our son, the actor, sang "ave maria." our daughter, caroline, was a bridesmaid. kathy and i have been fortunate to enjoy an adventurous life along the way, traveling to africa, ireland and enjoying many of those family events at home like birthdays, and the beach and just hanging around together. michael and thomas and caroline are just great company. especially great company when we're all together. sarah's one of us now, we were five, now we're six and i miss being together already, even though it was just yesterday. we were and i'm already missing them. as i said in the words of

. >> reporter: kathy luther is a teacher at rhode island's central falls high school, near providence. until yesterday, she and 92 other teachers and staff were about to lose their jobs at the end of the school year. last week, the central falls school board voted to axe the entire faculty at the school, where less than half the students graduate, after the teachers' union wouldn't agree to state-mandated reforms. >> i'm heartbroken, i'm heartbroken. >> reporter: but on monday, that spat between a school board and a teacher's union got a lot more public. >> if a school continues to fail its students year after year after year, if it doesn't show any sign of improvement, then there's got to be a sense of accountability. and that's what happened in rhode island last week at a chronically troubled school, when just 7% of 11th graders passed state math tests-- 7%. >> reporter: during that speech, the president proposed $900 million new dollars for systems that take similarly drastic steps to save failing schools. those steps include: firing the principal and at least half the school's sta

host: let's take a call from kathy in washington. she is undecided. tell us why, kathy? caller: well, i hear conflicting information. yesterday i heard president obama say in his speech that some people want to open it up to competition. he didn't allow if that was a good thing. from my experience my whole life, competition brings down prices. my big concern is my insurance premium is almost as much as my rent, and nobody has said how much it is going to go down, what percentage. i know you can't tell me if you are paying $400 it's going to go down to $200, but can't somebody tell me the percentage? host: thanks for your call. guest: nobody can tell you the percentage for your particular situation. part of it is going to depend on some of these other reforms, whether they can bring down health care costs, whether keeping people out of the emergency room is going to make the whole system more efficient or not. a lot of it is going to depend on things like your income level. in 2014 when these insurance subsidies take effect. up until about $80,000 a year, families will ge

were talking to christian kathy of isi books. christian, and you tell us what were your biggest sellers in 2009? >> we had the bug you, classify that dmitri at. that's going very well for us. we also have a rendezvous with testimony which is the history of the 1980 ronald reagan campaigned for president. we also had filled the streets by matt belding, about restoring the principles of the constitution. >> and what do you have coming up in 2010? >> we have a biography of william f. buckley called the founder of a movement by lee edwards from the heritage foundation. we also have a book called whittaker chambers, is part of our modern figures by richard wright and we have a book called seize freedom by representatives macarthur, thaddeus the cotter. it is restoring principles of conservativism in the upcoming years. and finally we have a book called the closing of the mind from other rightly, which is about the intellectual differences between muslims and western christians and how that needs to be resolved before we go further. >>

kathy kiley covers congress for "usa today." joining us this morning, thank you both.you did an extensive piece on how nancy pelosi did it. there is a lot in that article the talk about. what specific steps will she take to get the votes that she needs? guest: the most important thing that she has to get to this week is 260 members. -- 216 members. it will take a lot of work to get those final votes on board. over the weekend we heard from democratic leaders, it seems the votes will get their at 100%, but it will be a struggle for commercial reporters. but exciting to watch. host: you wrote that the november vote was a very personal battle this year. health care was not necessarily her signature piece that she worked on. in terms of her going at it again, going around again, what will she tried to do different this time? guest: what she has to do differently is deal with the fact that we have an election that is seven months away and a number of house democratic members are running scared, facing tough contests. what she will try to do, what she has to do, with those s

host: kathy dal kemper. guest: an important state.she understand the needs to get the country back on track. she's very concerned about issues in regard to abortion. i think she finds this will bill takes care of those needs. host: but she is emblem yatic about a number of fresh men worried about reelection. guest: most of the people i've spoken to, they don't mention to me their reelection. they talk to me about what they're hearing from their constituents, how -- we'll take the country forward faster. and most of them are trying to make sure that they can go back and be true representatives of their district. it will be a tough vote for a number of them. but my sense is that they are more weighing how this will affect the people in their state and in their district. and then make a decision based on that. host: congressman stupak of michigan has led. he said that he had up to a dozen votes, although congressman carney saying he will support the bill. but do you think congressman stupak will vote against the bill because of the abort
