nbc's kathy park is is in virginia beach. kathy what more do we know about the four still in the hospital? what more do we know about the investigation right now? >> reporter: craig, so i will start with the investigation. it's still moving forward, but right now it's most, most of it focused on building number two where the shooting happened on friday. as far as a motive, still unclear. yesterday at briefing city leaders were adamant stressing the fact that the suspect, he was not fired. he was not in the process of being fired but, in fact, submitted a resignation letter via email. that's pretty much all they would share at this point, but today memorials are growing around this complex. there is one right behind me. every time i turn around, it seems like someone is stopping by putting a flower down on one of the crosses. there are 12 crosses on the ground representing each of the lives lost. we had an opportunity to speak with christina smith and believe it or not, she was in the building at the time of this shooting. she

kathy parks is in virginia. what have police figured out why exactly this happened? >> reporter: well, steph, motive is still very much a mystery. yesterday, the police chief was adamant at getting across he was not fired and was not in the process of getting fired and in good standing. but he did submit a resignation via email. today city offices are closed in this complex. building 2 where the shooting happened on friday is closed indefinitely. and behind me is a growing memorial. there are 12 crosses representing the 12 lives lost. one of the victims is laquita brown. we had a chance to speak with her uncle and she actually knew the suspect and she questioned his stability. >> she knew him. and she actually felt that he wasn't, you know, in his right mind at times. >> reporter: and yesterday, another big headline was the time line of this shooting. we learned that it took just two minutes for officers to arrive on the scene. 36 minutes from dispatch to apprehending the suspect. and, stephanie, it was quite a dramatic moment when officers had that confrontation wit
