first, kathy park, live in atlanta. good morning to you. you were at the rally yesterday in atlanta. these rallies were taking place across the country and in other cities. what did you find? rmpt hey, ali. good morning to you. that is right. i would say here in atlanta that the rally group to about 1,000. it was passionate, but there was a lot of outrage, too, because as you know initially when investigators came out they were told by the suspect this was not racially motivated, but many of the voices here on the ground disagree. they say these women, that the victims, many of them being asian descent, the fact it was asian, this has to be a hate crime and why there is so much anger on the ground as well. you heard a few minutes anne johns, korean, as well as white and identifies with both of those races and says that her parents had told her, be careful. you know? she fears that there could be a potential attack on her and what also struck me, mother young girl who i spoke with and i asked her what do you think about all of this? she said

president has called recent attacks against asian-americans unamerican and said they must stop nbc's kathy park outside one of the spas in atlanta now. kathy? >> reporter: shep, good evening to you it certainly has been another difficult and painful day here in atlanta and all across the country. there were several events that condemned the violence as well as supporting the asian-american community in the wake of the shooting spree we heard from atlanta police, they said the investigation is moving forward everything is on the table the suspect may have visited some of these establishments in the past however, officials have stopped short of releasing the four names of the remaining victims they say they're working with the south korean consulate to identify the women i spoke with the local community advocate who said some of their family members may be overseas and not even know they lost their loved ones in the tragedy. shep, this has been a major turning point for the asian-american community who say that they are living in fear and they are outraged. take a listen. >> i think the horrific

. >> our reporting tonight on this story begins with kathy park live from one of the scenes in atlantarter: ari, good evening to you. that's right. we are in front of one of the shooting locations. behind me you might notice some of the flowers that are piling up. the community is definitely reeling. the suspect robert long, 21 years of old, of georgia remains in custody. he will be arraigned tomorrow morning, but he confessed to authorities saying that he did, in fact, carry out these heinous acts. he did it was not racially motivated. he told authorities that he had a sexual addiction and was lashing out at the spas that he had actually visited in the past. there were a total of eight victims. six of them being of asian descent. one person is still recovering from his injuries. but when reporters asked officials when they are still looking at the fact that maybe race was a motivating factor they didn't rule it out. still a lot of questions at this point. but moving forward, you know, the arraignment could potentially unveil some more information. as you mention, ari, this comes on th

. >> joining me now is kathy park reporting on the ground in atlanta. who has been reporting on how government and asian-american leaders are confronting anti-asian bias. kathy, what are you hearing today on the ground? what do we know about whether this is charged as a hate crime? >> reporter: i can tell you that there is still a level of fear and anxiety among asian americans in the wake of this tragedy. these rallies that were held across the country. it offered a safe space for asian-americans to come together to share their experiences of racism and discrimination that has been going on for quite a long time now. it really took the tragedies to spur this movement for change. obviously, there is a lot of pain, a lot of grief as this community continues to heal and mourn the eight victims lost. you mentioned the investigation. right now, it's in the preliminary stages. it's being led at the local levels. however, the fbi is assisting as well. atlanta police a couple days ago said nothing is off the table. however, federal officials say that right now,

kathy park joins me from outside the state capitol in albany. what's the latest we are hearing?e governor was touring a vaccine site just moments ago. he did not address the ongoing scandal that he finds himself in. there's a big headline that from this weekend, that larry was hired as secretary to the governor and was brought on as an advisor this spring to help with the vaccine rollout. "the washington post" first reported that he made phone calls to county executives to gauge where their loyalties lie with the governor as he finds himself in this scandal. one county executive thought it was questionable. why is this vaccine czar calling me? and decided to flag this to the state attorney general's office, because he felt that he could potentially be impacting the vaccine rollout in his particular community. this is something that larry says he denies. he did make the phone calls but did nothing wrong. also said that he was making the phone calls as a friend to governor cuomo. beth garvey, who is representing cuomo doubling down and issuing this statement saying, larry answered

nbc news correspondent kathy park interviewed the son of one of the victims today and janelle ross is a senior correspondent for "time" magazine and she's been reporting on the impact of this on the asian community in atlanta and they both join me now. kathy, i want to start with you because you got to interview one of the sons today. what was that conversation like and how is he doing? >> chris, good evening to you. as you can imagine, he is just in shock and he is still processing this tragedy. he had a lot of requests to speak with the media and he was gracious to talk to us for a few minutes. he is grateful for the outpouring of support. he put out a go fund me page because he is on his own now, taking care of his younger brother. and finances he realized was going to be tough moving forward. believe it or not, chris, i just checked it a few minutes ago. it has now climbed to $1.7 million in less than 24 hours. this is something that is resonating all across the country. this is something that hits very close to home for the asian american community. i mean randy, he was very thou

nbc news correspondent kathy park has more. >> reporter: kasie, good morning to you. been a very difficult day here in atlanta, as well as for the asian american community, still reeling from these heinous attacks. behind me you might notice a makeshift memorial that is growing in front of one of the shooting locations. there were three in total. the shooting happened in a span of about one hour and eight people were killed. one person is still recovering from his injuries. the suspect, robert aaron long, 21 years old, of georgia, said that these attacks were not racially motivated. however, officials are not ruling that out at this point. he added that he had a sex addiction and was targeting these establishments which he has visited before as a way of lashing out. as i mentioned, eight total victims, six of them being of asian descent. and that's why it has been so painful for the asian american community. we have been following headlines of a rise in anti-asian attacks from coast to coast. in fact, one non-profit tracking the numbers says the number is close to 3,8

. >> joining me now is msnbc news correspondent kathy park who is in atlanta and investigations correspondent tom winter. i apologize, i misspoke at the top. eight people are dead. so, tom, the investigation is still ongoing. we got that motive, perhaps, or something surrounding a motive from the spokesperson down there for law enforcement. what more do you know about the investigation? >> well, katy, a couple details coming in focus here in the last hour. first off on the gun, it's a .9-millimeter handgun, and senior law enforcement officials we've spoken with in the reporting of myself and mike cosner, that gun was illegally purchased yesterday, obviously before this shooting. georgia state law provides no sort of waiting period or what's commonly referred to as a cooling off period. in other words, you can purchase a gun legally in the state of georgia as long as there is no background check hit and there is no indication that the suspect, who you identified as robert aaron long, had no history with law enforcement that would preclude him from purchasing a weapon. as long as that's not the

behind two sons in the united states and the rest of the family still in south korea and our nbc's kathy park had a chance to speak with one of her sons randy just in the last 24 hours. take a listen to some of his story. >> i have my own time to myself at night when i have to go try and get some sleep. that's when i break down, but any other time i need to focus on getting past this as fast as possible, so i can at least live happily as fast as possible otherwise she won't be able to rest as easily. >> reporter: alex, just a really heartbreaking story there from randy park only 22 years old now has to take care of his younger brother, as well. he started a go fund me page just in the last several days asking for donations, financial support as he tries to figure out next steps with his younger brother. that go fund me has raised over $2 million at this point and in that page, randy himself noting that he feels like he has the support of the world with him, just really hard to imagine the path forward for a lot of these victims' families and that's part of what the rally happening behind me e

. >> joining me now, msnbc news investigations correspondent kathy park. i'll begin with you.of state lawmakers demanding that cuomo resigns, and new york's assembly speaker authorized an impeachment investigation into those allegations. so where do things stand on that front? >> so regarding that inquiry, the impeachment investigation, the assembly speaker authorized that investigation to move forward just yesterday. this paves a way for the judiciary committee to begin the inquiry and that allows them to review evidence, review documents, and they also have subpoena power. but keep in mind, this is separate from the ongoing investigation that has been launched with the attorney general's office. and letitia james made that clear despite the investigation that has now started at the state legislature. the attorney general's office, they have two attorneys that have been appointed to look into the sexual harassment allegations. this will be separate from the impeachment inquiry that has now been started. >> yeah. so to that point, by my count, there are at least three separate
