meteorologist kathy trafton is with us now. kathy so 80 to 100 mile an hour winds. it's just unbelievable. i just feel so sorry these people because these winds are hitting an atmosphere. that is next to had so little rain was we've had a lot of rain over gosh, over 10 inches since the rainfall. you're started. >> they've had 16 hundredths of an inch. >> here is the area where we have the warnings out. apds warning. it's a particularly dangerous situation warning as red flag warning. and of course, this in los angeles county, ventura county. it's also a red flag warning for santa barbara county. so it's a real concern as high pressure is over the great basin. the low pressure over southern california. the pressure gradient tightens up and that is a real problem. also, there's a lot of upper winds support. so this is not good. the weather is not helping out with this fire situation for us. we have a wind advisory. it's across the bay area and that is in effect until wednesday morning. tomorrow morning. and there is beach hazard to if you head to the beach highways, 2

going to check in now with kathy trafton.e weather center with details. >> and it's a beautiful day here. but you know what? southern california, not so beautiful in terms of the wind gusts, it is really strong no longer apts situation, not a particularly dangerous situation for red flag warnings but still a red flag warning continues. look at the colors lighting up with really strong offshore gusts. all of that, of course, with no relative humidity and extremely bone dry vegetation. so no wonder red flag warning is still in effect for los angeles and ventura counties. not a good situation. that does continue for a couple of days and then things start to turn around. so here's what's going on in southern california. the red flag warning extends through 10:00pm tonight and they're offshore winds. low relative humidities and the air quality. not so good. there's an alert in effect again through 10 o'clock tonight for the wind born dust and ashes particles if you breathe them, just terrible. a fire weather watch goes into effect

thanks, just kathy trafton is tracking the weather for us. hey, kathy. >> a grant that deal on. yeah. across los angeles county, ventura county and that expires on on friday. 6 o'clock. >> also across santa barbara county has also red flag warnings in effect there. and they expire tonight at 6 o'clock. so very dangerous. gusty winds coming out of the northeast. they will strengthen thursday afternoon into friday. we would we could even see 50 to 60 mile per hour gusts in those areas, especially that santa ana wind, typical locations and action, isolated spots up to 70 mile per hour gusts. here is what's fueling the winds. the confluence of closeness of high pressure and low pressure, high pressure, clockwise flow, low-pressure counter clockwise flow. the wind radiance the surface, gradients really strengthened when those 2 areas get so close together. and that is what can really drive those wind. so low pressure is sticking around, unfortunately. and then eventually on friday, it looks like it's going to start to move away and that will make all the difference because the winds

let's get you started this half hour with a look at your forecast with kathy trafton who is standing by in the weather center with the latest. good morning to you, kathy. how are things looking? >> well, good morning to you, stephanie. it's looking great. we have big change in the weather pattern and low pressure is what's happening for us. so low pressure is our dominant weather feature now. it is coming in our direction. >> and guess what? it's bringing a pretty good chance of some rainfall across the bay area. and across los angeles, where, of course, the fires have been raging rain is exactly what the firefighters need is a try to contain the fires. but in the meantime, for us, the rainfall will not be really impressive. not the totals you may not even see too many drops, but some areas could see maybe 2 tenths of an inch along with that area of low pressure. and the rain comes fog. that's for you. if you're in sonoma valley this morning through about 9 and a frost advisory is in effect and that is through 9 o'clock as well. you know what? that's for the interior bay area. freeze

kathy trafton here now with a look at the conditions of firefighters are facing kathy. >> well, it's a number of factors in crazy. just 2 wins to 82 100 miles per hour in some areas. >> it's also the topography. it's also the fuels. it gosh, it has been very, very dry southern california, although we had lots of rain over the last number of months, they've had very little rain. in fact, some areas may be 1607 inch for downtown los angeles. it was we had 10 inches. so it is so dry. that means that the fuels are dry. that means the trees. the grass is. and it's a very concerning very concerning situation in southern california with all those factors. oh, yes, we have wind gusts there. in fact, is a wind advisory in effect for us through through tomorrow. but you know what? peak winds will be tonight and they could be up to 50, 60 mile per hour gusts in some of the highest ranges. see the areas of magenta there and the reds. those are strongest winds. but look how they die down. even as we head towards sunrise at 7.25. so you see our winds die down and then they continue to die down thr

kathy trafton here it is a study in contrasts because, yes, we do have clear skies. it's beautiful out for us in the bay area. and yet in southern california, the skies are so thick with the smoke an air quality alert is in effect. look at that. >> fine particle pollution is what triggered this. this is from the wildfire smoke, of course. and look how it goes all the way down. that smoke down the baja peninsula and then even into the pacific and then circling back. so for us, it's beautiful conditions. clear skies, low temperatures overnight tonight for san francisco bay area all in the 40's except santa rosa, upper 30's. a look at temperatures across san francisco and the bay shoreline and also the pacific coast all in the 60's tomorrow. so temperatures continue tomorrow above normal. as a 66 in mountain view, 69 for santa clara, east bay numbers, mainly in the 60's for high temperatures tomorrow she had to the north bay except we get to 70 in fairfield and 71 in yacht bill and 62 in stinson beach. a look at our 7 day forecast shows beautiful chamber of commerce wea

let's check in now with our meteorologist kathy trafton to break down that forecast. what's helping them out today? what's helping him out with today is not good. we've got the santa ana winds still strong, but not as strong as before it was a pds fire situation, particularly dangerous situation. but flag warning. >> no longer it's a red flag warning. but what's going to help us out is a possibility of some possibly this weekend. we could see a few drops ourselves, but that's what's going to help them out. in a few days. things will start to turn. i think in the firefighters and the firefighters way cool mornings for us. in fact, their frost warnings in the north bay freeze and freeze warnings also and then also frost warnings across the east bay south bay as well. and it's going to be warmer in the afternoon through thursday. so it's a warming trend above normal temperatures. then cooler afternoons this weekend as a cool air mass starts to head in our direction and that slight chance of rain for us. he's going to be really good news. if we get a few drops, it's great

let's check in with kathy trafton for a first look at the weather. i kathy. >> good morning well, it's quite a beautiful morning 7.22. official sunrise time. you may not actually see the sun rise because of all the gray. >> there are areas of fog, low clouds and lots of stratus. here is the view of stratus looking down from the top, not temple, pius. you know what? this is more like a summertime weather pattern. you often see this kind of gray skies in the early summer time areas. but you know what? it's going to be starting to clear out it will mix out maybe by mid morning to early afternoon. so we'll see some of that fog go away. stratus pulls out of the day. only to return. it will be a repeat again overnight and crew out perhaps a little earlier tomorrow morning because of the onset of some wind. so and they were in a quick wrap morning fog and stratus. it mixes out. we get little bit afternoon clearing little bit cooler. a beach hazard statement in effect for with sneaker waves and rip currents. that's in effect until monday night. and the north

we start off this half hour with a look at your forecast with kathy trafton. y, i stephanie, i like the idea of the saturday friday night saturday from the coyotes. >> let's now take a look at the status of this is because there's awful lot of gray right across the bay area, not everywhere, but many areas. when you wake up, you're going to see gray. so here we are looking down on the stratus from atop mount tam a pious and now we're looking at the berkeley hills. it's all socked in lots of grey there. you know, we're just actually >> cleared out. it's at the coastline. half moon bay, a beautiful start to our saturday. so here we are looking at the transamerica pyramid. and here are your weather headlines that blanketed morning stratus. we'll start to clear away it burns off. we get lots afternoon sunshine. so it will be beautiful this afternoon. beautiful this morning. if you like gray seasonable temperatures. so temperatures about where they ought to we've been going with really warm temperatures this month and very sunny skies. now we're back toward a normal

in the meantime, let's check in with meteorologist kathy trafton for more. what we should know with the weather. kathy. >> well, the winds, course, factor southern california. it's just tragic. those strong santa ana winds are fueling those fires. >> but also the winds can shift just a little bit and of smoke, but also of the fire - itself. so it's very tricky. >> here in the bay area, flood advisories in effect until noon. >> for the shoreline locations around the san francisco bay in the san pablo bay than parts of north bay. this is a concern due to high tide. so maybe some of the parking lots and parks could be flooded. minor concerns, high wind advisory in effect, and that is through tomorrow morning. and that is for the interior mountains of the north bay, the east bay hills, down to the santa clara hills and also the santa cruz mountains even into the evening. so that's a real concern. our air quality is very good compared to southern california. of course, there's a lot of smoke from that for them. it's moving southward because of those northerly wind

we're going to check in now with kathy trafton. she's in the weather center looking at the bay area forecast for today. >> hey, justine. it's a beautiful day outside. lots of blue skies and a little bit hazy in some areas. as you look from atop mount tam%a pious, it just looks like some fits in thin cirrus clouds and maybe a little bit of haze. same deal in not the cirrus clouds, but little bit of haze right there in the horizon. and you know what? the air quality is good. it's not that good. some areas are moderate. i step back. you can see in the south bay, some moderate air quality in the east bay, some moderate air quality really kind of depends on where you are. depends on how the winds blow the winds, not impressive compared to last couple of days. we had wind advisories and gusts to 72 miles per hour in the north bay hills. nothing like that. today. the winds have calmed down. still a little bit. an offshore flow taking. it may be around 15, 16, 17 miles per hour. gusts and that would be just before sunrise sunset. so we're

let's check in with meteorologist kathy trafton for the latest on the conditions that firefighters areing out there today. kathy? >> a critical fire weather conditions continue for las angeles and ventura counties. that means east very gusty strong to moderate santa ana winds will continue today into monday, tuesday and wednesday. you can see some advisories also posted the far south the southern south below ventura and los angeles counties. we do have some concerns. even in san diego county, we have lots of high winds and we also have fire weather advisories in effect. and these santa ana winds will come in the usual santa ana corridors and the highest mountain peaks gusting 50 to 70 miles per hour. and also we do have a very low relative humidities. here's a surface smoke. it is moving away from us because the santa ana winds are going from north northeast southward and so is pushing the snow and the smoke in that direction, too around baja, california, as well as out to sea drought monitor shows how very dry conditions are in southern california. they need rain since last year. they

and our meteorologist kathy trafton is with us now. the latest that. >> you're right. the winds are kicking up again. they're strong, but they're gonna eien get stronger. peaking around 03:00am to 03:00pm tomorrow. that is the thing about winds making mention. you can actually see them. you can see what they do. you can see the winds, of course, within the trees around. you can see. >> devastation this caused by winds and the relative humidities are very, very dry. so there are a red flag warnings and p d s red flag warnings. that's particularly dangerous situation. red-flag warnings which are quite rare but we've been seeing a lot of them this week because of the terrible concerns about this fire. so the fire areas have spread. now they've got more warnings stretching up towards santa barbara. so we're definitely seeing some changes there. but there are. the areas right there with low relative humidity and very gusty winds. we could see winds gusting to 40 to 50 miles per hour. some areas in the valleys and the coast, maybe but then to up to 50 to 70 miles per hour in

kathy trafton here with details. we wouldn't expect temperatures well into the 60's close to 70 degrees this time of year, would you? but >> it was really warm. and partly due to those winds are offshore winds and they're bringing warm temperatures even to the coastline. so, yeah, we're really in beautiful shape because look at this sunset sunset tonight at 507. so every day now the sun sets a little bit later likened later or so. so beautiful conditions sunset tonight, 507, this week in weather. well, it is about the winds, of course, especially in southern california, even here in the bay area. there's a wind advisory in effect, and that's in effect until tomorrow morning. and we also have a beach hazard is a beach hazard statement that goes and is in effect until 9 o'clock tonight. that is for 20 foot breaking waves and also an increased risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents. so you're heading to the beach, not a good day to swim or bus or foot. our weather remains dry this week into the next week. here ar

. >> kathy trafton is look at that forecast kathy were high.ll of the above will go for the umbrella of the trench coat. the galoshes get the whole deal because yes, it is raining outside. if you're just waking up and walking outside is a wow. what's going on? >> its rain. but it will be here. that long is a big area of low pressure in the pacific. and those front moving across california, light rain for the most part, but there are some pockets of yellow, some areas where we do have little bit stronger rain at the water's edge. surf is up, but this is potentially life threatening surf. so this is high surf, high surf advisory in effect and is also marine hazards statement. the high surf could be 18 to 20 feet very large. dangerous breaking waves and also rip currents are a concern that i actually likely moderate to likely that's amazing. and rip currents can really pull you out from the shore to the scene. that's not the direction you want to go. we have possibility of coastal flooding. we've got the coastal rain erosion. so definitely good pl

. >> we're going to move up kathy trafton here to talk about our weather conditions. certainly not what they're facing down you know what? we've got offshore winds in both locations. but boy, they're certainly different here than they are in southern california. focus just a little bit on southern california. it is extremely dangerous. critical fire situations. a wind advisory in effect pretty much everywhere. and then it turns to with high red flag warning for high winds and dry conditions. and that, of course, continues through tomorrow morning through wednesday at noon. so big fire danger concerns, of course, through southern california. the smoke is blowing off shore, though. so that is actually good news for the angelenos and also for us to northeast winds are pushing things out to sea and that's great news. future humidity will looks very dry across southern california, of course, with very low relative humidities. the southern california fires. it's a long duration of pds red-flag warnings and the pds stands for particularly dangerous situations. and that's for

kathy trafton here to give us an update on the conditions. >> will the conditions in the bay area areve been outside today that she noticed it's been just beautiful today. warm conditions. temperatures much warmer than normal for us. a little bit cooler than yesterday. not big change, though. and you know what the suns about to set at 508, we got about 20 minutes or so until sunset. here is a view from the berkeley hills looking west toward the sun. so we're in great shape temperature change. yes, it is. cooler. then it was yesterday, but not a whole lot. just by a few degrees. maybe 4 degrees cooler in santa rosa and in half moon bay. otherwise, pretty steady as she goes. look at these numbers. it's january early january. a lot of numbers today peaked in the 60's. well, sausalito, 59 degrees in fairfax. 51 the calistoga 62 in terms of the winds, not as gusty as we've been seeing the last number of days today. if you look at the gus is not terribly remarkable. but then look at this. what's this overnight? thursday morning, starting thursday morning into friday. look at this. a cooler

kron 4 meteorologist kathy trafton monitoring those conditions down in southern california. kathy. >> we know it's hard to believe that was a week ago that the first spark was fired for the palisades fire. and we continue to battle with very gusty winds. very dangerous. santa ana winds. >> blowing offshore and really causing huge, huge problems right now through many parts of los angeles and ventura counties. a red flag warning is in effect. in fact, its a p d s red flag warning in some areas for particularly dangerous situation for the red flag warning. so people got critical fire concerns going on. here's some of the gusty winds. as you can see, the areas of yellow on especially orange and especially bad. that's where the strongest winds are. it's high. it's a very high risk for large fires with a very rapid fire spread extreme fire behavior and also long-range spotting sundays. these are really critical conditions and big concerns that's likely to continue for more days. so we've got big problems. southern california fire than long duration for these red flag warnings, pds

we have kathy trafton joining us this morning to give us that forecast. good morning, cathy. >> and good morning to you, ray to it's a beautiful morning, but it is chilly. so if you're heading out the door, you might want to grab a jacket, dress and some layers. nice view from the berkeley hills. temperatures in many areas are at or below freezing. look at here right livermore. 32 degrees. 35 pittsburgh fairfield. 29 degrees. 32 santa rosa. 31 ingrained in sebastopol. you get the drift. it is chilly outside. it's 42 in san francisco. so if you're heading out. no wonder they're all kinds of alerts and watches as a freeze warning in the southern santa clara valley and also through part of the hills and mountains in that area. and there's a frostr advisory for pretty much all of the bay area as long as you right away from the ocean. so it it's going to be cold. and this these advisories go through 9 o'clock this morning. so the freeze warning is goes from 1 o'clock to 9 o'clock frost advisory and again, the areas away from the coast. it could be a beautiful

kathy trafton is here to talk a little bit about the weather that they're dealing with there. kathy. >> well, part of the palmers just terrifically gusty santa ana winds coming from the land to the sea. that's the offshore directions of those gusts are amazing 100 mile per hour. gusts reported at mount lukens magic mountain 90 mile per hour gusts in the santa monica mountains. settle pick 86 miles an hour. deer creek canyon, 80 miles per hours because of strong, gusty winds and those winds are blowing some of these particulate matter offshore. take a look at this forecast model, as you see the particulate matter from the wildfires surface smoke, if you will, going right down, baja, california and then taking a loop around. out to sea and then starting to stretch back again. he's this kind of that particulate matter. the smokes a very, very difficult. you don't want to breathe in. there's a red flag warning in southern california until 6 o'clock pm. that is for strong, gusty winds and low relative humidities as low as 5% isolated gusts up to 70 miles per hour. but the strongest

want to send things over to our meteorologist kathy trafton who has been looking at conditions here in the bay and down their hike after. >> i ran well, it really heartbreaking. the situation as it continues. >> critical fire danger, extreme fire weather still in effect. still a number of red flag warnings and they're all kinds of fire watches throughout los angeles. and of course, for ventura county and los angeles counties, the most critical and most concerning. so right now, my gosh, expect to wednesday, that's when we have the extreme fire danger. and that's, of course, for very gusty winds. us north east and northern santa ana winds continuing 2 parts of the area. here's a look at some of the callers and you see the colors and the reds and the purples that can go from the 50's to 60's. even 75 mile per hour. gusts are possible. so this is our future again into tuesday evening of the wind gusts surface smoke. the winds at least are blowing the smoke away from las angeles out to sea. so that's good news for them. it's not really the temperatures is a look at my numbers right now. 63

. >> kathy trafton here to bring us as details on the weather. yeah, it wasn't that a beautiful picture of the set of the golden gate bridge. my goodness, gracious. >> after a beautiful day, temperatures today warmer than normal. as many as 2 to 10 degrees warmer san francisco. 62 as warm a 70 that was in san jose. and it's chilly as 59. and that was in livermore. so there you go with our temperatures. look at contours going now is you go through time. high pressure still remains in control. you see a little bit action, little bit of change. but basically we still get a lot of offshore winds for the next number of days. low temperatures will my goodness. it's going to be chilly overnight tonight. temperatures dropping because we don't really have a lot of moisture in the atmosphere we started don't have any clouds in the atmosphere to trap the earth's he close to the ground. therefore it starts to radiate away. and it's so chilly that they actually have put into effect a frost advisory. look at santa rosa. 37 degrees. and 38 for napa. that's a lo

>> weather time as we take a peek outside and majestic view from the top of mount tam up first kathy trafton joins us with a look at the local weather. >> and it's a beautiful day. one more day in our cookie cutter. gorgeous weather right with mild temperatures. mostly clear skies light, offshore winds. okay. no rain, which january. i wouldn't be. happy to see some rain. but you know what? this is a beautiful spell of weather after a tremendous amount of rainfall. we saw just a few weeks ago. the sun is set. this is the view looking toward the ocean from the lawrence livermore lab. and you can still see just a little bit of a pinkish orange glow and word great shape because our temperatures today were a little bit warmer than normal. typically this time of year we'd be seeing high temperatures in the 50's. but today as warm as a half a dozen degrees, more that put us in the 60's pretty much everywhere and temperatures right now we're starting to drop even as the sun has set. we're starting to see things cool off mainly in 50's right now. napa. 49 degrees. so it's dropping down. we're going t

. >> kathy trafton here to give us a forecast. >> we're in for a beautiful evening. the sun has set its dark. it seems calm. but you know what? the winds are really going to kick up. >> so here's a great look. telegraph hill quite tower. everything looks as it should be. but look at these wind as we get toward midnight. my goodness gracious, they get really strong, could be 40 to 50 mile per hour gusts and even in some of the very highest bridges, even up to 70 mile per hour gusts. the good news is that these winds will die down quickly. another put good part of the equation. is it? the moisture is really good across the bay area due to all the winds and the rain we've seen seeing all the storms that came through. our fuel is very moist till the soil is moist, the trees, everything is well hydrated. so we'll see. these winds really died down and that's good news for us. we'll see them again probably this weekend, but not nearly as strong tomorrow. the winds not such a big deal. part of the reason you we have such warm temperatures today, maybe you noticed maybe 15 de

kathy trafton here. she's got details on our forecast. high copy. >> hi, there isn't. isn't that a beautiful shot with the palm trees and you see the bridge in the background? >> it's a gorgeous evening. we do have clear skies and we'll see some cool temperatures overnight and maybe even some patches of fog. so outside right now, if you go outside, it's going to be just gorgeous. you don't need your umbrella that you might need. a coat is a little bit chilly as you head outside temperatures right now, mainly in the 40's, some areas reaching down into the 30's half moon bay. 37 39 in napa. so temperatures are on their way down. and by tomorrow morning, it may be as chilly as it was this morning, which means a few areas could see some freezing temperatures may be in the north bay may be in the east bay. maybe not because humidity is up a little bit a lot extra surface water vapor. some relative humidity really a little bit higher. now. and so that could bring the formation of a few patches of fog. you're heading out tonight, especially tomorrow morning. be careful becaus

meteorologist kathy trafton has been keeping an eye on those winds. everyone is wondering when they are going to get a break. kathy, what's going on down there at this hour? >> well, there's no great white yet to see fluctuations in the wind. but by think friday, i think that will start to see some changes. but my goodness gracious, the winds in southern california this last day. >> up to 100 miles per hour. so it's unbelievable. the amount of strength of the wind speeds are coming out of the northeast and these are, of course, the santa ana winds mount lukens down in southern california, 100 miles per hour. magic mountain, the truck trail there, 90 miles per hour salopek and the santa monica mountains, 86 miles per hour. and finally, also the santa monica mountains. deer creek at 80 miles per hour. high wind warning that is in effect until 10 o'clock friday. so that has been extended. in the meantime, as a lot of smoke coming as well, fires, as you know, embers and smoke must find particulate matter. that is in that in that smoke. and that can if you

bird's eye view of the city of san francisco and kron meteorologist kathy trafton this year. kathy, some blue sky and sunshine. i think right? >> big change from yesterday with all the grace everything is different today. there is a wind advisory you've been outside. you might have thought it was windy and you'd be right. >> this advisory is for the mountains of the north bay and also for the east bay hills. and the gusts were really impressive in some areas. forecast up to 60 but actually got to 72 in some spots. look how strong the gusts are through solano county, napa county, sonoma county. and then as night goes on, still strong and then after sunset, the winds start to diminish and we get a gentle sea breeze and by 1 o'clock, that advisory is allowed to expire. so then after that wind is not a factor. so the north bay and east bay hills where the main areas of strong winds and again recorded win. 66 to 72 miles per hour. so far. also there's a beach hazard advisory for pacific beaches, pacific coast beaches, and that is for high surf, sneaker waves and also for some stron

our meteorologist kathy trafton has a little bit more detail on what experience. >> it's extreme fire weather concerns. in fact, it's apds red-flag warning particular date det dangerous situation. a national weather service forecaster said really that's as loud they can scream. this is this pdf redskin u.s. red flag warning because it's for critical fire weather to extreme fire behavior. these fire systems can create their own weather. it's crazy, but it's a red flag. warning is particularly dangerous, knows they don't give us not very often. that is certainly last week or so. gusty winds to 70 miles per hour possible in the highest peaks and by tomorrow. so the went to strengthening in southern california and by 03:00am to 03:00pm tomorrow. those winds are a bit the peak. and that is when they boast strong winds are. and that's the biggest concern. high-risk large fires, rapid spreads are possible. here are the areas of fire danger. the red flag warnings and the high wind warnings. some of those extend now up through polk county and into santa barbara county. the well, dan. >> kevin,

meteorologist kathy trafton this year. she's been monitoring those conditions and southern california county. >> it's a red flag warning. an exact pts red-flag warning as well. so it's particularly dangerous situation. red flag warnings throughout las angeles and ventura counties. and the concern, of course, is he's very strong, gusting winds gusting up to 70 miles per hour. could fan extreme fire danger. certainly we could see some high risk for large fires really rapid fire spread extreme fire behavior and the weather conditions could also cause more spotty and more fires, embers to fly and more fires to come toward us and toward the las angeles area. future wind gusts. i mean, it's not pretty lots of oranges and reds and magenta is on this map. these are for northeast to east winds in the area. southern california fires and it's long duration of these red flag warnings, pds, particularly dangerous situations. and that's for those 2 counties la and ventura and the damaging winds could really cause huge problems. 55 to 70

kathy trafton with the latest on conditions in southern california. ephanie, the good news is there. no watches and warnings in effect right now. we have this was just blazing red for many, many days as a ferocious santa ana winds combined with really dry weather to cause those firestorm. so the fire storms are continuing, but at least there's not a ferocious offshore north, northeast santa ana winds. so that is the good news. and, you know, the thing is this pattern could repeat itself until we get some soaking rains. but soaking rains are a double edged sword because we could have repeat natural disasters in the form of flooding. flash flooding and mudslides. a lot of the vegetation is now gone off off the land and the vegetation is often what really hold the water in even moderate rainfall could cause some really terrible flooding. and we've seen that many at many other areas, including santa barbara, not so long ago. but for the good news. for the meantime, as for the weekend, for today, into the weekend, it's cooler weather. we have onshore flow o

kathy trafton has the latest on conditions that firefighters and families out there are facing in la kathy. >> yeah, got a lot of problems in southern california. some of the fires continue to burn and there was a fire weather watch in effect because more santa ana winds are heading toward southern california monday into tuesday, a stronger santa ana event. so you can see from santa barbara stretching all the way south toward the mexican border. that is a concern. so that is one concern. another concern, as we just mentioned, was mudslides. so there 2 major hazards after this kind of a fire in one of them is flooding. another one is a bit debris flow. and of course, a problem with the flooding is because when soil was burned, it's unlike normal soil is kind of spongy. it can often absorb lots of moisture and the plants help do that. alot of plants now are burned away and that burned soil is really hard is like concrete. and so it repels water just the way a raincoat might repel water. so we not only have a concern about the continued santa ana winds. we have concerned that when we do

kathy trafton tracking that rain. good morning, cathy. good morning, renay. you have definitely been paying attention. you get an a plus. >> this is the view predawn hours. berkeley hills and the very first friday of the brand new year. what is it bringing us rain? okay. we've been dry for a few days but look at the precipitation. has a big of subtropical moitture heading right up to the pacific northwest. bringing rain to them and look at that last frame starting to encroach on the north bay. so the weather for today is the first friday has widespread rain across the bay area. so bring your umbrella start to the northway first. it works its way southward and there's a high surf advisory in effect from 09:00pm to 03:00am. and we per sneaker waves. but the dry weather returns soon enough of that comes in later tonight into tomorrow into the first weekend of 2025. and beyond. we'll talk about how much rain more about the surf advisory and more about the dry weather. how long that might last coming up in weather. >> easy out things are slick and what you don't w

kathy trafton joining my guest good morning. made you know, i hope you had a good new year. it was just beautiful, dry weather dry on new year's day. and will that continue? well, here we go. here's a look from mount tam up. highest clear skies. you can actually see you can just see how clear it is at this point. and hopefully comes my computer this week. the continues to dry weather continues today. then things start to change it. take change toward the west. her that midnight or so the rain approaches the north bay and spread southward. it spreads eastward and the entire bay area has widespread rainfall for the very first friday. that will be tomorrow of 2025. so dry weather returns after that. and we will stay dry for quite some time. today's high temperatures 50's and 60's and some of the warmest spots in the south bay, as you might expect, with some increasing clouds as the storm approaches say right now is some moisture streaming in clouds streaming into northern california. precipitation stays well north to us around cape mendocino and it will sink southward. so by ab
