there meteorologist kathy wilson explain what is the city and state are doing to try to keep the streets safer for drivers. news 4 at 5:00 starts right now . >>> good evening, everyone and thank you for joining us together. i'm shelby sheehan. >> and i'm joe hart. nevada's commission will reconsider a controversial decision impacting the solar rooftop industry. a hearing took place in carson city this morning. >>> unfortunately it is coming too late for hundreds of workers at solar city, including 100 employees here in reno. on your on your side report. the workers in reno were parking -- packing up today. >> reporter: that's right. after the commity hearing this morning, solar city employees here in reno were closing shop. i spoke to several of them and they say they're baffled and angry over the loss of their good-paying jobs. >> closing down the shop. it is happening all over the state right now. >> reporter: this solar city warehouse now in reno is closing its doors. the solar city installer says he'll soon join the ranks of the unemployed. what are you going to do? what are your pla

now we'll send it other than r over to meteorologist kathy wilson for your full forecast. possibly some rain on the way kathy. >> that's right. we're seeing some strong is that together occurring right now in reno. but rain showers are falling for the central portion of the state. we've got some snow and rain out near battle mountain. then some snow and rain up in the sierra but nothing for reno storm rolling in we have quite a few advisories. winter weather advisory winter storm warning bringing 8 to 14 inches of snow to the sierra. 3 to 8-inches in the sierra valley. 95 miles per hour at the crest of the sierra or higher. we have wind gusts associated with this cold front that's moving in with this storm and a flash flood watch for those burn areas those scar areas on the mountain from those recent fires. and we're watching for some flooding and some debris flow associated with that. there's a lot of moisture packed into this system. as it moves in with this large scale activity. but we will see a quiet monday night and then watch for this huge energy surge to hit on the

i'm meteorologist kathy wilson on the top of mount rose. back to you. >> thank you so much. be careful on your way down tonight. here is another peek outside at your winter weather and we check in with madison corney how is it going, madison? >> reporter: all of the weather coverage you could possibly want. here is a live look now. we are looking at the last hour here. we are seeing still some snow flurries and lite snow showers, but at 4:00, there was snow, but that has stop and we are expecting the snow showers to really diminish as the evening hours progress. but we are still expecting about a 50% chance of isolated to scattered snow showers across the region tonight. with this winter weather advisory, that is going to remain in effect until 1:00 a.m. that is the purple shaded area on your map. we also have the winter storm warning in effect until 10:00. we are seeing travel delays out there. slick roads and chain rolls are in effect. of course, we are still looking at additional accumulation out there tonight. right now in reno, we're still seeing a few snow flurries as

we'll send it over to kathy wilson for a first look at our forecast. >> we have one more lingering and is then that week of active weather is gonna wrap up. we do have a break for you sunday, monday, and is tuesday. another storm on the way for wednesday with potential still over down to the valley floor. then we're seeing average temperatures finally. so those 40 degrees and 20 overnight are gonna stick around for the next week or so. looking at today, we reached a high of 41. that's only 4 degrees below average. and then a low of 27. look at that record low, negative 18 set in 1890. i don't think we'll get anywhere close to that. but i wanted to look at our snowfall totals on the valley floor. we've respected 2.2 inches of snow. just a little above average for this time of year. 39 degrees in reno right now with relative humidity 65%. the burn code is green, so it is all right to burn. i'm have the full forecast >>> representatives from the university of nevada are warning people about the risks of radon, a naturally considering radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tastele

meteorologist kathy wilson headed up to mt. rose to check in the snow condition today and had this report. >> the sierra avalanche center has issued a what that means is avalanche conditions exist on all slopes facing all cardinal directions, anything greater than 30 degrees for both natural and human cause avalanches. yesterday we saw some avalanche activity, one event with three riders in the back county. being careful in the back county tonight into tomorrow morning. a do want to make it clear that the ski reports -- resorts are making upper mitigation strategies to avoid avalanches, using dynamite to clear away will snow and are following all safety procedures. this warning is in effect until saturday morning at 7:00 a.m., and involves both human, natural and remotely triggered avalanches for the tahoe basin. i'm meteorologist kathy wilson reporting. >> coming up after the break the cdc said that one in every five are bullied but what . >> welcome back everyone, the cds says says one of five kids had been bullied at school

service i meteorologist kathy wilson, back to you. >> we saw widespread power outages throughout northern nevada this afternoon. incredibly strong winds like kassie was talking about in washoe valley sent these power poles tumbling down to once snagged a billboard on the way down. there are currently only about 200 customers without power. >> if you are flying in or out airport, you might want to check your flight status. according to a flight spokesperson, tonight it has canceled several flights in and out of the area because of strong winds. >> we first told you about a reported armed robbery at the university of nevada campus on wednesday but now we know the alleged the admitted that it never happened. alicia degennaro looked in to help police have looked into this incident. >> reporter: those students received three text messages on their phones through wendy bringing them updates about the situation. police said the first alert out after the alleged victim's mother called their front desk to report the incident. officers tracked down the young woman at her apartment and she did confi

. >>> kathy wilson joins us with the latest on this winter storm. >> well, we do have an effect for the tahoe basin. and rain and snow showers are falling this evening. then we're tracking a big storm to impact your holiday. but the sierra avalanche center has issued a back county avalanche warning for most of the tahoe basin. dangerous on slopes steerp than 30 degrees -- steeper than 30 degrees. and this is in effect until 7:00 am saturday. looking at today, we reached a high of 44 degrees. a little bit below average. on par with the overnight night staying above freezing. around the region, we're gonna see these temperatures continue to stay above average. in reno 39 degrees. calm winds and relative snow showers trying to make their way down. mostly rain right now in the next 24 hours. we're watching for rain showers to linger around into tomorrow morning. warming up to a nice 50 degrees for tomorrow with sunshine peaking out in the afternoon. >>> the [ coughing ] of a man who died in a car crash this morning is unknown tonight. the crash happened near sun valley boulevard and arapaho

news 4's meteorologist kathy wilson joins us from mount rose highway with and how are the roads looking? >> good evening. the snow has stopped for right now on mount rose. we are seeing blowing snow the area, but the skies to my north are clear. you can see stars, but skies to the south are still very cloudy and some storms could potentially pop up throughout the night tonight. temperatures are very chilly. 24 degrees on mount rose and we're going to expect the temperatures to drop into the low 20s into tonight. so far this storm has impacted we saw 10 inches of snow on mount rose just this morning and we saw 12 inches in north star and then a heavier area that got hit near the white mountains, 14 inches and 11- inches in mammoth. this winter weather advisory is in effect until 4:00 a.m. this morning or thursday morning,ened we do have the potential for more freezing fog into the morning hours after mid night with all of the moisture that is available on the valley floor from all of these storms. what freezing fog is it is just super comed water that is water that is below 32 degrees th

i'm meteorologist kathy wilson, back to you. >> thank you for spelling it automatic out there. we appreciate that. >>> hundreds of solar jobs in the reno area and across the this follow as controversial decision we the november unf public utilities commission. and terri hendry joins us with more on this on your side report. it is actually now reconsidering that decision. >>> you're right, joe, but unfortunately it is coming too late for hundreds of employees at solar city that is the company that installs solar panels on rooftops. employees are closing shop in reno and across nevada. solar city is leaving the silver state following a rate hike decision that increases bills for solar us customers. the company and employees say that decision makes solar energy no longer affordable in nevada that rate hike went into effect january 1. the decision was made back in december, and then the commission argued that the new rate structure is necessary, so customers without solar are not unfairly subsidizing those with solar. the solar industry and the state's consumer protection advocate

kathy wilson has our full forecast. we probably won't see severe conditions but we do have another storm on the way. >> that's right. we have a lot of moisture in the pacific that is now able to start reaching the sierras. we have a high pressure moving out and we are picking up snow showers& radar north of the also the eastern portions of the state. were watching snow showers blanketing all the way from winnemucca to milwaukee. we have to split troughs and what that means is we have to separate low pressure systems and they're both going to hit the pacific, the west coast and bring a lot of moisture. we been blocking it and making that stay in the pacific and now we're going to be watching for this trough line to start moving into the area and bringing storms for the next week or so. and we know skies are clears and 26degrees with mostly cloudy conditions and no precipitation falling. 23degrees in carson city 37 in southlake tahoe. so we're going to start seeing where we have warmer temperatures in the mountains that w

let's send it over to kathy wilson for our first check on our forecast. >> as you saw, jane was getting some snow. that will be the case for the next 24-30 hours. we have a winter weather divisor he in effect with more heavy snow high wind and travel impasse. anyone traveling across the hill or in the backcountry should be prepared for dangerous white out conditions doppler radar indicates showers falling across the region from truckee out towards fallon. right now in merino, 35 with some snow falling. northeasterly winds, 5 miles an hour. with the snow showers falling, we will be watching that to continue throughout the next 24 hours. we will be watching for some heavier snow between one him-5 am. dying down a little bit in the morning and picking back up in the mid-afternoon. we're expecting up to 4 inches on the valley floor. i will have that timed out for you and more snow totals coming up. olivia?>> thanks, kathy. good news, after four years of drought, the truckee rigid for -- river surged to its highest peak thanks to the storm. reno police spent the day of the truckee river corr

let's get a first check on your weather with kathy wilson. we might get some rain tomorrow.>> reporter: a winter weather advisory has been issued for the greater lake tahoe region. echoes into effect tomorrow afternoon. with that, we'll see some rain down on the valley floor with snow reaching upwards of a foot at the highest elevations. the big story here is wind gust. gusty conditions on the valley floor with 100 mph gusts at the crest of the sierra today. we reached a high of 57, 11 degrees above average for this time of year, only 10 degrees below that record high set in 2011. look at that, what a warm january day. dropping 35 degrees in reno with fairly calm winds and relative humidity sitting around 76%. our air quality is good, we do have that okay to burn code. looking at the next 24 hours, we will watch those temperatures start to pick back up tomorrow with cloud cover increasing and then that rain will arrive by the afternoon. more on that next storm and two more to follow in my full forecast. olivia?>> thanks, kathy. local teachers

and kathy wilson has that answer in her forecast. >>> we have that winter weather advisory for most of the state. this is a classic sierra storm and we haven't seen one of these in a few years. it's a beautiful set up but look at the snow totals around the area. greater reno carson said -- carson city were looking at 6 inches in greater lake tahoe, a foot at the higher elevations and 8 inches elsewhere, mono county upwards of 6 to 12 inches with gusty winds up to 75 miles per hour. snow was falling around a doppler radar this evening and as we take a look downtown as were looking at the valley floor not much is going on yet. we are starting to see this rain is no line with some hail of your driving along interstate 80 and then snow into the suburbs as well as toward sun valley. snow will pick up for the rest of the night into the day tomorrow. here's a beautiful textbook case of a low pressure system. it sitting right around reno and we have a stretch of warmer air bringing rain to southern california in a band of snow stretching all the way to denver. california all the way to denver.

we'll send it over to meteorologist kathy wilson for your full forecast. >> good evening. we are watching this winter storm rolling in. winter storm watch has been issued for the sierras taking effect monday afternoon with 10 to 20 inches for the high sierra. 4 to 8 inches around the lake. even 5 to 10 inches down in the white mountains over in the eastern portion of the state we are watching for five to 8 inches of snow expect travel impacts along the interstates and then some blizzard conditions are in available potentially in the sierra. on doppler radar we have a few snow showers picking up right now up towards the lake. snow is falling and then down into carson city as well as into south reno. and out in the eastern portion of the state there is snow showers near battle mountain. putting your future cast in motion what we have going on is this low pressure right here this trough is bringing, pumping i should say moisture into the california coast north to southern california rain all around. that's going bring snow and more snow into the sierra as well as the eastern
