katie marzullo, abc7 news. >>> still ahead, chp rolls into action in oakland. a live report on how they will be helping the police force tonight. >>> police search for a couple stealing mail in broad daylight. >>> the california highway patrol is calling it its first night of lending a hand in oakland a big success. overnight chp joined oakland police in patrolling the city that has seen a spike in crime. >> reporter: oakland police happy to have chp officers on the streets with them to deal with the criminal element. opd has long said if you want to impact the crime rate in this city you have to get cooperation of the citizens. a short time ago, that made a big impact on some elementary schools. the chp helicopter is a serious attention-getter and it did that today at the health and safety fair. oakland pd brought out special vehicles, squad cars with cruisers like they were last night on the first night of oakland's operation impact. chp says it was a success. >> last night we had 11 to 12 arrests which included for driving under the influence, warrant arrest

nbc's katy tur is live in new jersey at a gas station where demand has been heavy all evening. katy, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, this is not a gas shortage but a power shortage, meaning stations either can't pump their gas or get supplies. here at the sonoco, they ran out about 4:00 this afternoon, that you -- is why you're seeing the cones here behind me 10,000 gallons gone here. before sunset they were coming in on fumes, or coming in empty snaked around block after block after block, hundreds of cars idled, inching towards to gas in fact, you needed a helicopter to see just how long the lines were. >> i mean, the line is going all the way around. >> reporter: from north of new jersey, south of philadelphia and east of long island, people were on the hunt for gas. as far west of pennsylvania >> two and a half hours. >> reporter: and in some areas, police were deployed to maintain order. those looking to fill up tanks or gas cans waited and waited. >> in jersey, they don't have >> in jersey, they don't have t gas, working on a generator. >> reporter: in new york c

katie marzullo is live at the scene. >> reporter: police have cleared the scene. the yellow crime tape that was up all morning was a scary sight to neighbors who are already concerned about a series of similar incidents here. it was not a nightmare it was reality for a woman sound an leap in her palo alto apartment. she woke to a -- to a man standing over her head. she screamed he said something we which are trying to germ. a brief struggle ensued and he tried to force her down on to her bed. >> she suffered a bruised writes but was able to -- bruised wrist but was able to scare him off. police scoured the area but the pan got away. >> -- but the man got away. >> [ unintelligible ] >> seems like a safe neighborhood, a concerning factor. >> reporter: investigators say the man broke in through the locked and chained front door you can see the marks in the wood. it is a bold crime that follows a series of groping in the same area in the last few months. >> they are of similar nature. absolutely, we are going to consider those itch >> reporter: pattern not lost on a v

katie marzullo is at hawthorne and high street. >> reporter: she woke to a stranger in her apartment.you can see officers, crime scene tape around the home the woman is at the police station being interviewed. the good news is she was not hurt. she did not require medical attention. the bad news is, this guy is still on the loose. you can see k-9 officers searching they did an 8 x 8 block search this morning this started around 2:20 this morning they've called off the search until the sun comes up and they can talk to neighbors. they know a man, not known to this woman, an intruder got into this woman's house. she woke up, saw him, in her 20s, she screamed and he fled. officers at this time cannot tell me how he got into the house whether he broke in or something was open. they do not have any description of this man and they can't tell me if he was wearing a mask or anything at the time. very active investigation. we'll keep an eye on the situation. katie marzullo, abc7 news. >>> in the north bay, residents are bracing for more rain and potential for problems bring many yesterday mor
