katie couric joins us live to talk about her 20/20 special which airs tonight. you sat down with regis and he seemed cool and collected about ending the show contrary to what his fans are feeling. >> i think he is a bit agitated. he is a little bit nervous about the future. i also think he has come to terms with the fact that he feels like it is time to hang up his hat at least on this show. i don't think he is retiring. i think he is trying to figure out what he will do next. i don't think we have seen the end of regis philbin. >> did he give you any indication if he was spending more time with family? >> he will be on a book tour because he has just written another book. he has also been doing some nightlife appearances and a nightclub appearances. i think he did when with susan lucci. i think he has a few things plans that he is wide open and has been asking people on the show for career advice. he dabbled in reality when he hired a crew and a shot him for one day and he decided it was too boring to make it into a telephone -- television show. i think he will

my colleague here at abc, katie couric has been spending quality time with regis. katie, what was it like? what did you learn about regis? >> reporter: well, you know, he is this warm and wonderful offcamera as he is on camera. he's very authentic and very real. and yet i think there's some deep-seeded insecurity. as a young man, he was very unsure of himself. he didn't have a lot of self-confidence. and his parents were very disaproving of the notion of him going into show business. nonetheless, he's been in showbiz for more than 50 years. his first job was as an nbc page in 1956. he wanted to be a singer like his idol bing crosby or late night tv host like johnny carson, but luckily for us, he became our morning cup of regis. >> "live with regis and kelly." >> reporter: in 28 years, be have been snakes -- >> it's hurting my arm. >> reporter: and shots. >> oh! >> reporter: the ma'carena. and milking. pies and pet cures. >> not too close. >> you're making me nervous! >> reporter: and for nearly three decades, regis' routine, both on and off the air, has been virtual

between katie couric and barbara walters. vying for my attention. >> yes. >> johnny here. the king. >> reporter: this morning fixture wanted to be the king of late-night. the closest he got was a behind-the-scenes interview with johnny carson. and to his shock, a dinner invitation. >> we made a date. wolfgang puck's restaurant. and i got on the freeway. i kept going. and i see l.a.x. i turned off on l.a.x. and i couldn't find my way back. >> reporter: and there was no gps at the time. >> no gps. i'm telling you, i did 90 miles per hour. >> you must have been sweating bullets by then. >> i was sweating bullets. i went into the restaurant. and there he was, sitting there. and he had that long face on. he was angry that i was late. he was, i think, insulted. and of all the guys you don't want to insult. i mean, how stupid of me? >> reporter: was that your last experience with johnny carson? >> afraid to see him after that. >> reporter: oh. >> i'm sorry, johnny. thank you. >> reporter: he's had a few. it took more than 20 years,
