reporter: that's opened the door for a new generation of american talent including 15-year-old katie grimes. grimes tells us she used the time during the pandemic to train harder. >> try to work on things, you know, glass half full. i got a whole other year to train and be prepared for the trials. who knows, maybe i wouldn't have made the team if it happened when it was supposed to. >> reporter: 68% of the swimmers on the team have never been to an olympic games before. it's not just the youth. it's also the inexperience. >> 17-year-old dara torres -- >> reporter: in 1984 and not yet a senior in high school, dara torres won gold with team usa. torres would go on to collect 12 olympic medals, becoming first american swimmer to appear in five olympic games. what are some of the benefits of having so many young swimmers? >> when you go to the olympic games, it's the biggest event you've ever been to. all the best athletes in the world are going to be there. but with that said, there's no spectators, there's no crowd, and when you're at an olympic games like that, you feed off the atmosphere. a
