here's abc news reporter katie mar suh low. >> reporter: this is the kitty hawk flyer. the company says it's safe, tested and legal to operate. you don't need a pilot's license. >> it's an exciting area to be involved in from autonomous vehicles. >> reporter: fred berez is the head of the aviation and technology department at san jose state university. he says eventually people will be able to fly themselves to and from work in something like this. the personal flight delay will come from the state and federal government. >> we're going to be dealing with dmv and faa working together so that's the issue we'll be dealing with. regulation is the issue by the technology. >> reporter: kitty hawk says this flyer is for recreation. it can be flown only in uncongested areas like over a body of water. we showed the test flight video to drivers of regular cars. >> i think it's really cool. i think we can get there at some point like "back to the future ii." if i could afford one, i'd buy one. >> it looks like fun but i would worry about the safety issues. >> reporter: professor
