katie marzullo is live with the latest on the search for survivors. >> reporter: one of the most recent stories we are hearing is that of a man rescued from the rubble after he called for help on his cell phone. three others were saved from the same spot. there's this video you can watch as workers use chisels to cut away concrete and metal and pull the man free of the debris. he was under a collapsed six story building. he looks limp, but he's alive. the injured are recovering in a tent set up for triage. there are not enough hospitals to handle the wounded. the death toll has reached 270 people. it is expected to grow. but not as substantially as initially feared according to turkey's interior minister. an eastern city near the iranian border was hardest hit, 80 multi-story buildings collapse. authorities are warning people to stay away. people standing right on top of the buildings, on top of the rubble and digging through with their bare hands in a desperate attempt to find more survivors. there are others filing to bus stations trying to get out of town. within the first 10 hours o

katie marzullo live with details on the story. >> reporter: these are tough decisions.re two meetings today in which district officials will decide if they are going to close schools for good. grab your planner and be ready. we start in oakland five schools in danger of being closed. over the last few months we've seen several meetings where parents make the case for their school to stay open. district officials say enrollment is down and funding. closures would displace 900 students and dozens of teachers. the district would save two million dollars a year less than 1% of the general fund. oakland, lake view, lazear, marshal, maxwell park, sante fe in north oakland. in west contra costa county, shannon and lake elementary schools. last month the board voted to payoff a loan and keep the campuses open, you -- then the state said the plan wouldn't work and ruled the schools would close. west contra costa is having a meeting at 6:00 this evening. in oakland the meeting is at 5:00 at oakland technical school. yesterday two schools in oakland that were not on the closure li

good morning i'm katie marzullo in for cheryl jennings. >> and i'm kristen sze. amtrak is telling passengers even though trains are running again they should expect delays. early indications of what might have again wrong. amy hollyfield joins us from the scene. >> reporter: questions about how the two rains were on the same track going in opposite directions or why they crashed into each other. amtrak released a written statement. in that statement it says nothing about how this happened or what can be done in the future to prevent it. the two trains hit head-on. they were going in opposite directions on the same track. one pulling into the station the other was unloading. >> all of a sudden we hear this big explosion we thought waits a forklift. >> reporter: amtrak described the incident as a low speed crash those who experienced it says it was scary. >> i was on my phone then heard a big crash and didn't know what happened everyone got off the train. a couple people hurt. >> my brother fell off his wheelchair rolled back, got a nick on the face now he's in ago

katie marzullo joins us live. >> reporter: you cannot call it a celebration, but people did gather at the jewish community federation this morning to watch as an israeli soldier was released to his family. at the same time palestinians are cheering the release of hundreds of their prisoners. the military wing of hamas is making threats. a moment five years in the making, israeli soldier gilad shalit is free. members of the jewish community came together in san francisco this morning to watch each milestone of shalit's release. >> if you look at the people in the room, you see a tempered joy. >> reporter: israel's counsul general reminded everyone there is another side to today's event. >> on the one hand there's the sense that the country has been true to a captive that needed to be brought back. on the other hand the rest of the society will bear the brunt, because it can affect our security. >> reporter: in exchange for shalit israel promised to release more than 1,000 palestinian prisoners. several hundred were driven out early this morning. >> our struggle will never stop he said.

katie marzullo, abc7 news. >>> investigators are trying to determine the cause of a motor home fire that left two severely burned. the fire broke out 5:00 this morning gutting the mobile home park. both people inside escaped not before being badly burned. one woman was burned over 80 to 100% of her body. a second person has burns over 20% of his or her body. >> both burn victims were treated at the scene and flown to uc davis medical center by helicopter. >> it took crews 20 minutes to put out the fire which spread to a wood pile but not cause any other major damage. >>> more than 20 doctors and nurses are preparing for at least an eight hour surgery to separate conjoin twins in palo alto. 2-year-olds were born in the philippines and now living in san jose. the girls are joined at the sternum and have livers and diagrams that are tightly fused together. they have separate hearts, ribs and digestive systems. the doctors are holding a news conference to outline how they will conduct that procedure tomorrow. >> the man about to get a 100 million dollar severance package. and he's not leavin

katie marzullo is there live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. this time we still believe there were seven people arrested early this morning five for blocking streets and two for battery on officers if you ask protesters they will say they are the ones who are become abused. the -- who are being abused. the protest did move to the plaza over the weekend. protesters set up camp. police said you can stay but you cannot camp. police began the process of removing the tents and tarps. protesters blocked those efforts. throwing garbage cans debris, dumpsters and themselves into the way of the police officers and the public trucks that were trying to move away some of that stuff. in the middle of it somebody slashed the tire of a city truck. >> we have no problem with them protesting. it is the right of freedom of speech. that is not the issue nor has it ever been the issue. the issue is they can't set up a campsite can't violate the laws we have on the books. >> when the police come and brutally attack peaceful protesters it is extremely wrong. i hope

katie marzullo, abc7 news. >>> new poll shows san francisco mayor ed lee is on track to keep his interim job. the bay citizen poll shows leedom nating the field three weeks before the election. -- more than 31% say lee is their first choice under the city's voting process. city attorney herrera is second 8.5% and supervisor avellar third. if lee wins he become the first elected chinese-american mayor in a city that is 1/5 chinese-american and 1/3 asian. >>> president obama is pushing congress hard to pass parts of his jobs bill as he hit the road today. karen travers has more from washington. >> reporter: president obama hit the road campaigning for his jobs bill. >> the president: too many people are looking for work. too many families are looking for that sense of security that has been slipping away for the past decade now. >> reporter: the president is on a three-day bus tour through north carolina and virginia. he won both states in 2008 winning them again next year will be a challenge. the economy is the most important issue. mr. obama's approval rate something 35% on that issue in

katie marzullo is live with more. >> reporter: another phase of the federal government's fight against the media. california watch has uncovered a plan by federal prosecutors to begin targeting newspapers, tv and radio stations that run advertisements for medical marijuana dispensaries. federal law does state it is illegal for a person to place an ad for an illegal drug that includes marijuana. but, medical marijuana is legal in california. california watch talked with an attorney who specializes in defending marijuana cases. he says the law is legit, but not entirely clear. the executive editor of the sfa guardian says, he's in a hold pattern. >> will you continue to sell ads? >> as long as it is legal in california and the u.s. attorney doesn't tell us to stop. if we get a note from the u.s. attorney saying we have to stop, then we have to make a decision at that point. >> one has to question the wisdom of this kind of attack on a legal busy which is creating jobs and tax revenue, at a time of economic crisis. >> reporter: the health center claim to have paid out two million dollars

katie marzullo has been tracking the story. >> reporter: so interesting. israel released hundreds of palestinian prisoners in exchange for one israeli soldier. already we are hearing at least one of those palestinians, a leader within hamas is calling on his people to kidnap more israelis in order to get more palestinians out of brings -- out of prison. it begins with 125 -- with 25-year-old gilad shalit. he spent five years held by hamas militants in gaza. in his first interview it sounds like he can barely breathe as he talks. he did tell the reporter he's excited to taste freedom and had missed his family and friends. his release is contingent on israel releasing more than 1,000 palestinian prisoners. advance carrying the first few hunt out of israel was seen overnight. a second wave is scheduled in two months. hundreds, including relatives waited to greet them. waving the palestinian and green flag of hamas. palestinian president mahmoud an bass is tang with hamas in a show of -- mahmoud abbas is standing with hamas in a show of unity. many note it is
