katie marzullo is live on the campus where the tents are again but the crowd isn't.ow are the spirits there >> reporter: good morning. i'm good you asked. two things i want to show you. look down the slope at the group of protest there's remain. i would argue the mood has changed since the tents were removed when we first got on scene and that was happening. protesters were fired up, indignant and had a lot to say. after that a festive party mood, music being played, people dancing and stuff. now it is very, very quiet. some of those protesters have left. looks like just a few moments of maybe disorganization here before they get going again at a later hour. also, the cleanup efforts. police did move in they arrested two people and took down the tents on the sproul hall steps. what remains is a mess a lot of the stuff the students brought in to show they were camping out not only tents, a couch, piano, book shelf, those remain. crews are here, big dump truck is here. bulldozer is here. they are taking down all of those items. students even though it was a nonviolent

katie marzullo is live in the newsroom with the latest. >> reporter: the coughlin fired started 12:30this morning, more than 9,000 residents unvoluntary evacuation orders the fire is burning so erraticly in multiple directions they don't know where the city going next. -- at last 450 acres burned some reports say 600, 20 homes destroyed. several injuries reported most from smoke inhalation and one fire-related heart attack. 400 firefighters are fighting this fight and it is a hard battle. there are sustained high winds, gusts up to 60 miles-an-hour, plus the fire is burning in rugged terrain and steep canyons. no estimate on containment. the sheriff is on the scene he says hundreds more homes are in harm's way and it is a certainty that more will be destroyed. >> we have a fire that's burning out of control. burning rapidly in a residential area of the city of reno. embers the size of half dollars are blowing up to a half mile ahead of the fire. >> reporter: we are learning in the last hour winds are up to 70 miles-an-hour. 90 schools are closed. two shelters open. one is already full

katie marzullo is live in the newsroom with the latest. >> reporter: the coughlin fired started 12:30 this morning, more than 9,000 residents unvoluntary evacuation orders the fire is burning so erraticly in multiple directions they don't know where the city going next. -- at last 450 acres burned some reports say 600, 20 homes destroyed. several injuries reported most from smoke inhalation and one fire-related heart attack. 400 firefighters are fighting this fight and it is a hard battle. there are sustained high winds, gusts up to 60 miles-an-hour, plus the fire is burning in rugged terrain and steep canyons. no estimate on containment. the sheriff is on the scene he says hundreds more homes are in harm's way and it is a certainty that more will be destroyed. >> we have a fire that's burning out of control. burning rapidly in a residential area of the city of reno. embers the size of half dollars are blowing up to a half mile ahead of the fire. >> reporter: we are learning in the last hour winds are up to 70 miles-an-hour. 90 schools are closed. two shelters open. one is already ful

katie marzullo is live with more on that >> reporter: good morning. the camp here at justin herman plaza has remained uned. dozens of tents and -- untouched. dozens of tents and tarps still in place. protesters believe a raid is imminent. there are police officers on scene just sitting in their parked cars, standard police presence. officers did move in sunday morning around 1:30 on the encampment that was just a over at 101 market. in front of the federal building. three days after officials warned the occupiers there that camping on the sidewalk is illegal. there were a dozen tents, six were arrested for interfering with the operation. most left peacefully. some were moved from the market street location say they unphased the movement will go forward. >> every time there's a raise we get stronger. as you see around the nation they took out zuccotti park and two days later we have 40,000 in the streets going over the bridges. it is about garnering public support. it is not about tents. >> reporter: police put up barricades on market in front of the f

katie marzullo is following the developments. >> reporter: good morning. you don't need me to do the math. that deadline passed 4 1/2 hours ago. police in los angeles have not taken action to evict occupy protesters who are holding their ground this is aerial view. there are an estimated 1,000 if the streets at the height of this. earlier protesters were advertising for what they called an eviction party. rallying to get more folks downtown. because mayor villaraigosa set 12:01 this morning as the deadline for campers to leave the park near city hall. protesters have not bundled. >> i know my rights to redress grievances with the government doesn't have an expiration date. >> reporter: there are police officers on the scene. you can see them holding the line. they have not moved in on the demonstrators i have the police chief says officers will not physically remove anyone, only that as of 12:01 they are able to enforce the law. beyond that they are not revealing timelines or tactics. there are nearly 500 tents at the encampment established two months ago.

katie marzullo is live in the newsroom. >> reporter: there are two items of interest for commuters. first, a nearly two million dollar gift to bart train riders, clean seats. the board of directors has voted to swap out some of the old cloth seats for vie anyone ones, they are starting with -- vinyl ones. they are starting with 100 cars. they are easier to clean and they cost less. look for those new seats this spring. second, the bart board is moving forward to add late night weekend service via bus. the idea of running trains past midnight has been scrapped. weekend morning commuters had a big problem with the idea because it would have meant delaying their weekend morning trains because crews need a certain amount of time for maintenance in between shifts. running buses after midnight is on the table. the board has asked staff to come up with a prepostal. the president of the bart board suggesting late night bart service a year ago but told the san jose mercury news that making it happen is more complicated than he thought. katie marzullo, abc7 news. >>> 4:37 now. >>> new unemplo

katie marzullo is live on campus. >> reporter: the camp has been clear. what we are seeing right now, the occupy cal protesters doing a mic check right now. we want to let you know they are saying how the administration said that they could stay with tends -- [ inaudible ] -- protesters in high spirits as you can hear. riot gear are here. they did clear the tents from the steps of sproul hall. now they are surrounding sproul plaza keeping protesters on the outside. we heard report there is were some arrests. we have not heard any reports of violence or conflict or confrontation with police. for the most part the students are staying quiet, i mean, nonviolent but they are making noise seem to be having a good time. it is not all students. some are residents of berkeley. and the residents were -- [ inaudible ] nonstudents were asked to stay at a further away barrier. that is who is playing the music. interesting scene we'll continue to follow it. and find out more about what is going on and what happened during the tent-clearing process. at this point prote

katie marzullo joins us. >> reporter: he said if he thought he was going to get arrested he would have worn a coat and tie that is what he typically does and he would know he's 80-years-old and has been arrested 80 times. with all of that experience he was surprised to learn that students were bracing for police tactics like pepper spray and maybe worse. students knew to prepare for the worst. >> we are going to hold out now >> reporter: they put up tents overnight and voted to link arms and not let police break up their camp as they did one week ago. >> the difference between now and then is now we're more organized and ready to fight. fight not in a physical sense, but fight for our rights. >> reporter: occupiers prepared for tear gas as rumors spread that was the new police tactic. a high profile camper and activist elseburg who released the pentagon papers joined the occupies last night. >> somebody offered me a gas mask last night. in america? in a peaceful rally, i need a gas mask? didn't make sense. i didn't like the sound of. >> reporter: it never came to be police officer rema

katie marzullo with more on this investigation. >> reporter: good morning. police have issued a public safety warning. specifically, for residents in the grammercy place neighborhood in east san jose. they say that sexual assault suspect is on the loose. the attack happened saturday. 14-year-old girl with a friend walking on a pedestrian bridge near highway 680. this man approached the two girls asked to use a cell phone one girl offered him her cell phone and the friend kept walking. after a while, this was around 6:00 in the evening saturday, the girl realized she had lost track of her friend she called police, reported her friend missing police call the cell phone and the victim answered and said she was still on the bridge and needed help. officers responded. they did find the girl and they say the suspect was still there lingering behind her when he saw police he took off running, they gave chase but lost him in the grammercy place neighborhood that is why the safety issue is for that area. not much of a description on this man. short, heavyset, maybe i

katie marzullo is there live. any signs of imminent police action? >> reporter: no. take a look, justin herman plaza still very much entrenched, all tends in place. all of the tarps that have been -- strung together between trees still in place, large banners still between the trees if a raid was coming this morning, [ inaudible ] it is illegal and the city has made that very clear so it is very possible that something is going to happen we just no indication as to when. the smaller location at 101 market was raided by police officers moved in 1:00 sunday morning a smaller group maybe just 12 tents. those tends have been cleared, campers moved, six arrested entirely peaceful. it is peaceful at justin herman plaza. one camper says if police come he probably will leave peacefully. >> if they come in charging and they outnumber us 5-1, i don't want to throw myself away, i'm not going to go to jail over nothing. >> reporter: police did put barricades up in front of 101 market to prevent any campers from reoccupying that location. some of those campers have moved to justi
