katie nastro from going.com uh- katie you guys of course identify and send the best flight deals to your users. so glad you're here to share it. how's it going? good to see you. i am in person. >> yeah. yes that's right. i'm so happy to be here. thank you for having me. >> all right. well, let's talk about this because prices seem super high this summer. certainly anecdotally, a lot of people are saying that. but the picture is really quite complex, isn't it? >> yeah. you know, other areas of the economy might feel the pinch from inflation, but travel is actually one of those areas that's seen some relief looking at average price of airfare. just just at average price of airfare, we're actually down 6% year over year. we're actually down almost 20% from where we saw it at its peak in june of 2022. cost of hotels are actually down in the last six months, as well as rental cars. those rental car prices are nowhere near where we saw them in 2021, when it felt like you couldn't get a rental car for 100 or $200, or more than or excuse me, for at least that. >> so you're seeing the overall pic

well, joining us right now is katy nastro with going.com. it's so nice to have you in studio. very nice to be here and of course the bay area is totally turning it on in terms of weather. i can't be more happy to be out here. >> let's talk about the weather because you know, we've had some extreme heat especially in our east bay areas and it's hitting areas across the southwest with hot temperatures and plus dealt with hurricanes recently. how does this play into making your travel plans right now? because i think when i think of planning in the winter, i think lot about the cold temperatures. but summertime? not so much. >> right. a lot of people tend to forget that you can deal with significant weather even in the summer. you have thunderstorms and you have hurricanes, you have extreme heat that can all be factors that play into seeing significant delays and cancellations when it comes to air travel specifically. however, i do come bearing some good news. despite the weather that we have seen recently, airlines are actually doing a really good job at mitigating what's within

we're midway through summer, but there's still time to plan a getaway, and travel expert katy nastro ice. hey, katy. >> how are you, gio? >> gio: good. let's not waste time and get right to these travel deals. what are you seeing? >> let's get right to it. you know, you can take advantage of some end of summer stellar fares to get away this summer. you can head from miami to san diego, beat the humidity, for only 198 round trip. >> gio: that's a long flight. >> that's a long flight, and a great price. >> gio: yeah. >> you can head from kansas city out to st. george, utah, which sits at the very edge of zion national park. so, if you wanted something a bit more outdoorsy, explore those beautiful sandstone cliffs, you can do so or if you really wanted to take that euro trip, you know, you're seeing people on social media out there, you can go yourself from boston to dublin for only 403 round trip. that's right. forget the portal. you can get affordably over to dublin and be there in person or you can go from -- oh, my gosh. escaping me, the last two. >> gio: that's all right because you

katie nastro is with the travel website going.com. we discussed what happens if you end up paying out of pocket because of today's big meltdown. say an extra night in a hotel, meals, a rental car, etc? well, katie recommends you keep your receipts and file a reimbursement claim with the airline, or look to see if the credit card that you're using actually has flight disruption, sort of insurance or trip delay insurance built in. a lot of credit cards do, especially travel credit cards nowadays. all right, back to airline reimbursement for a second. those policies vary by carrier, and you can look them up right now on the government's dashboard. flight rights.gov. sometimes airlines like to say flight cancellations are beyond their control. they like to throw around a legal term called force majeure. well today the department of transportation told us directly it considers today's it disaster within the airline's control. they picked the vendor after all, and they are on the hook. that means the government believes airlines should be r
