and so our katie nielsen drove to the bay area today. and i know you just got there in the last hour. what things are you seeing right now? >> i think one of the most impactful things that we've seen is just the nature of this fire and how it has been hopscotching from one house to another, which is so indicative of some of these wind driven fires that we are all too familiar with within the bay area. this is where five people have been confirmed, killed in the fire. these are not the mansions of the pacific palisades, and they're not the beach front bungalows of malibu. it's known as a working class neighborhood, north of the 210 freeway, best known for the rose parade. these homes were destroyed and still standing. and it is still there. we were talking with the homeowner of this home that used to be right here. they run a lawn care business. and even his grandparents would live here. now there is nothing left. i asked him, do you know when this happened? he said he drove by around 10:45 this morning and that is when he saw their homes

our katie nielsen was heading down i-5 today to cover the fires since they passed this strike team coming from marin county. a part of the cavalry of firefighters from northern california, including teams from alameda county and santa rosa. here, we are seeing firefighters from skywalk average, tiburon, and central and southern marin. and a team of 22 firefighters, they are heading to socal from santa clara county, bringing five engines with them. they're going to be assigned to fight the eaton fire near pasadena. and they say all of them have volunteered for the duty, where they could be gone for up to two weeks. >> the two that we have is the training, the special equipment. we have camping gear. we have everything that we need to be self-sufficient for 72 hours. and also to camp out in the dirt if we need to, depending on where the fire front is. >> and the battalion chief wanted locals here to know these assignments are in addition to the firefighters that are still on duty here in the bay area. so he says we are fully covered up here. ryan? >> all right, thanks, anne. >>> first alert

our katie nielsen is live down there for us this evening. we know a lot of bay area strike teams have been sent to the bay area where you are. what are you seeing this evening? >> reporter: yeah, ryan, we actually ran into a lot of those strike teams here in the altadena area today. a lot of the crews were sent into this eaton fire, not the palisades fire. they told us today was almost like whac-a-mole, basically when a hotspot popped up, their job was to go and tamp it down. the reason why, if you look out here in front of me, you can actually see some of these small fires still smoldering in the remains of these homes. the concern is if the winds pick up tonight because we are still under red flag warnings, that embers could be carried up into the air and could then land on some of the homes that have not been burned. those might then catch fire and then you have even more structures lost. so those bay area crews today going around trying to put out these hotspots to make sure that everyone stays safe. now the other part of that is that is
