first lady katie o'malley says that the number of bullying cases in maryland and around the nation are alarming. that's why she's taking a week to fight it. >> reporter: in massachusetts, this 15-year-old committed suicide in january and police arrested three students for bullying her and in florida, a 5th grader hangedherself. in baltimore city, students were suspended after bullying. a little girl was beaten by three students. >> you can't put a band-aid on it -- you have to fix it >> reporter: the next step is preventing it. for that, the maryland first lady signed on to help and marked this week as bullying awareness week. -- all kids know what it is and getting them to be aware of what to do about it. >> reporter: last school year, 1700 cases were reported around the state. some school leads fear that could be highier because the students are too afraid to come forward. >> it's not a serious thing and you have to deal with it. >> reporter: he's a 6th grader and he's seen it in the hallways and he says that cyber bullying is the worst. and students use the cell phones and internet.
